What are you talking about? Most men in the world aren't even circumcised.

Where did you get that from? I remember reading otherwise, but can't find any reliable statistics right now.

Just take into account the many muslims, plus the majority or Americans who do it for cosmetic reasons alone. Sure, you might have a bunch of buddhists in Asia, Christians in South America and most Europeans who aren't circumcised, but I still believe circumcision is the norm in the world.

No, circumcision is not the norm. There are many more men in the world uncircumcised than circumcised. I'll go hunting for some more statistics online and get back. The Wiki says it's about 1/3 of the world's men who are circumcised.

*

Just as an FYI, men who still have their foreskin are far more susceptible to yeast infections than men who are circumcised. In fact, it can be a real problem for some men. It isn't just bacteria that's an issue, it's yeast as well which is a fungi (not a bacteria).

Thanks for the stats.

I myself am not an expert on this issue at all, as it's the clear norm not to be circumcised where I am from. The discussion I took part in (on facebook) shed a lot of new light for me on this issue:

An ex-orger (American) basically said how the pro-circumcision arguments in America are simply a mischief-making to conceal the mostly cosmetic-oriented ineterest of most parents who choose to circumcise their boys.

I have never heard of any infections or other illnesses due to lack of hygiene of uncircumcised people in my area. If you're clean (and parents clean their babies as they should), there is no reason why foreskin should prevent being clean underneath.

If some kind of bacteria or fungus does settle, the foreskin is not the cause, but rather a general lack of hygiene, which then shows itself earlier under the foreskin. But, like I said, if you shower (or shower your baby properly), there is no reason why an uncircumsised penis should be "less clean" than the other.

It's not about being "less clean". Many women have serious problems with recurring yeast infections (vaginal). Yeast is present in all of our bodies but can get out of whack / balance. Just because a woman gets a yeast infection, doesn't mean she's unclean. I know a lot of women who have issues with yeast infections who are very clean and take care of their bodies. Fortunately, I've never had that recurring issue but many women do.

*

When you have a foreskin that covers the penis, it's a warm, moist enclosed area (much like a vagina is enclosed). This is where yeast can get out of control. Yeast thrives in warm, moist places. When your penis is covered with a foreskin, it gets warm and moist in there. That's normal. It's a perfect breeding ground for yeast. Circumcised men usually do not have that issue because their penis is "uncovered".

*

Showering really has little to do with yeast overgrowth. People who shower frequently can have recurring issues with yeast infections.

*

P.S. I'm no expert either. Only sharing what I know. wink

That's not true, though! Why would the area underneath the foreskin be moist, like a vagina? The inside of a vagina is one big mucous membrane, while the glans - with or without foreskin - is not. Hoping not to be too intrusive, I can clearly say that the area underneath my foreskin has never been more or less moist than, for instance, my hands.

That's why the risk of a yeast infection should not be higher or lower if someone is not circumcised. Circumcision does not affect the moisture or lubrication underneath the foreskin (if you shower and dry like any normal person would)!

But Dave, it is true that the area is moist. After all it's skin and it's "covered". Skin that's covered gets moist. Ever worn a band aid over your finger? When you take off the bandaid, the skin underneath is moist. Just using that as an example. Of course it's going to get moist in there. Did you read the article I posted earlier? If not, be sure to do so. K?

I'm not saying an uncircumcised penis is EXACTLY like a vagina. My point was that it's enclosed or covered and therefore moist. It's certainly more moist than a circumcised male because his penis isn't covered. It only makes sense.

*

In the end, no one's penis is better than another person's penis because one has a cover and the other doesn't. They're just different from one another. That's all.

It is certainly something that can be a bother. A close friend and her husband decided not to circumcize their child and had nothing but problems. They aren't bad parents, they took care of their son, but he continued to have infections and issues. Because they were ongoing they finally had him circumsized when he was about 3. It was MUCH more difficult and tramatic then, but he hasn't had an issue since. In hindsight, she wishes she'd done it at birth consdiering all he went through.

It's not always cut and dry (pun intended). I still don't belive in routine circumcision, but issues can and do occur.

Of course, but I guess that's just bad luck, just as issues occur because of the operation itself (like mentioned previously, sometimes even resulting in death of a baby). Many parents probably wish they hadn't had their child circumcised...

One way or another, I guess I'm just trying to say that circumcision is not a necessity if you want to be healthy and hygienic and that, for whatever it may bring, all those positives come at a risk many parents often do not consider.

Personally, if I really wanted to do that much about my personal hygiene, I'd simply go the extra mile and shower two times a day and keep my skin (just like I do, and it works out fine).
