Spike was right. The interviewer could have brought up the criticism later in the interview instead in the intro. And she was wrong about making assumptions about his finances.

Granted, I was (and still) disappointed about the Spike Lee VS. Tyler Perry fallout a few years earlier. But you know what? I have to co-sign with Spike on the way he is defending the Kickstarter campaign. I like it when Spike is verbally gun blazing like he was in that interview.

Spike is smart enough not 2 use his own loot on these projects.

Spike Lee has crossed the $1 million mark on the Kickstarter campaign for his upcoming independent film.

The director set a goal of $1.25 million for the campaign and he's quickly nearing the amount. He has already received support from over 5,000 people, with four of them donating $10,000. Those who pledge the most money will receive prizes varying from court side tickets to a New York Knicks basketball game alongside Lee to a chance to spend the day on the set of the film.

Lee has not given away much details on the film but he's said that it will center around "humans addicted to blood."

Lee initially caught flack from critics who believe that he is taking funding from other filmmakers who are in greater need of it.

"Their agenda blew up in their face," Lee said of those in opposition of his Kickstarter campaign.

"I've been doing Kickstarter since before there was a kickstarter."

Hollywoood studios are no longer interested in making independent films. King of the blockbusters Steven Spielberg had a hard time getting Lincoln made. Even after the massive success of the Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan had to fight tooth and nail to get Inception made. Woody Allen gets most of his funding from European studios.

To be fair the criticism should have been introduced towards Zach Braff, "Veronica Mars", and Spike Lee by people who think that celebs do not need to infiltrate the crowdfunding sites (kind of like how celebs/Hollywood have infiltrated the big film festivals, and how now an indie film is a Hollywood indie film, and normal indie films are called microbudget films) but Spike makes a good point that celebs also bring more views and small pocket investors to the site than there were before.

Kickstarter is for independent film makers which is what Spike Lee is. He always has to raise funds for his films, and if a studio is not paying to make it, he will have to kick up money somewhere.

I don't see anything wrong with this. And I think more people are aware of Kickstarter now BECAUSE of his star quality.

I helped to kickstart a little film that I wanted to be seen made, and it wasn't Spike's.

I think the only films of Spike Lee that could be considered independent is actually one, his first feature (and his short before that). All the others were backed by a studio/company. If this new one doesn't get backed by a major studio (in addition to the kickstarter funds) then maybe it could be considered independent.

I am speaking in the present. Of course he isn't using Kickstarter while also being backed by a major studio.
