USA no longer world's fattest country

falloff

Mexico beats US to be world's fattest country - but we're still a close second

The United States no longer holds the title of the world’s most populous, obese nation; that designation has been passed on to Mexico.

According to a new report from the United Nations, nearly 70 percent of Mexican adults are overweight, and childhood obesity in the country has tripled within the past decade, Medical Daily reported. One-third of Mexican teenagers are also obese, and experts believe that four out of every five obese children will remain overweight for the rest of their lives.

Overall, 32.8 percent of Mexican adults are considered obese, compared to 31.8 percent of adults in the United States. Nearly 70,000 deaths in Mexico each year are caused by weight-related diabetes, and more than 400,000 new cases of diabetes are diagnosed annually.

Experts believe the rise in Mexico’s obesity rates has to do with the continuously growing gap between the country’s classes, as 50 percent of the population currently lives below the poverty line. According to Medical Daily, healthy diets are becoming less affordable, prompting individuals with low incomes to consume more unhealthy foods, such as fried foods and soda.

One researcher also believes the increase can be attributed to more Mexicans moving from rural to urban areas, where food prices are much higher and sedentary lifestyles are easier.

lol

I guess it's the abundance of Vitamin T (Tortillas, Tacos, Tamales & Tostadas)

I'm sure Tongans and Samoans are on average a lot fatter than Mexians and Americans.

I don't find any of this funny in any way. The gif with that massive young boy is heartbreaking.

People who are severely overweight need to exhibit some self control. Nobody is force feeding anyone. People do it to themselves via excessive eating and lack of exercise.

The humorous part is not the large person in the gif or his condition. What's funny is the fact that we're celebrating the USA no longer being number one. Not that it counts for much but at least it's a step in the right direction.

You have to laugh at a story like this.

It's pathetic that we've allowed ourselves to even be anywhere NEAR "the world's fattest country".

We are an educated, wealthy, industrialized, first-world nation. THE first world nation by many accounts.

Why is then, that we still have this problem? Why does the government have to start getting involved to get people to consume NORMAL portions of food?

Sorry. Heartbreaking in the sense that it borders on child abuse. But then again, we live in an insular society...no one wants to be told what to do. No one wants to be accountable for their actions. Most people don't even hold the notion of morality as something important...why would something as personal as eating habits be within the realm of public scrutiny, right?

It is what it is. shrug

And I am fine with laughing at the notion that the good old' USA has been knocked off the pedestal when it comes to being fat.

Some might not agree with me but I really think that allowing your children to get that big is child abuse. When children are little, parents control what they eat because they are the one who buy the food. Even if a child has a crappy lunch at school, parents still have control of what they eat for breakfast and lunch.

P.S. I just came back from Mexico and I didn't see that many fat people. I wonder what they base their statistics on?

It's not about "stop eating" it's about WHAT is being eaten and HOW MUCH of it that is the problem.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

er

Okay, it was 13 years ago since I was there, but I noticed one thing: the further north you get, the bigger people are. In the south (Chiapas) most people are indigena, living on a more or less traditional diet of tortillas and frijoles ( carne de los pobres as a Guatemalan man told me). In the north, they're more Americanized.
