What is up with people saying someone is Irrelevant? This seems to be an over used phrase now adays. I hear people saying it constantly. What makes someone more relevant than someone else? Is it money? Power? Fame? If you are alive, as far as I'm concerned, you are relevant and that's my rant for the day!

I think people think something or someone is 'irrelevant' because they used to hold that subject on a higher level but now they think its not up to par when there is nothing wrong with it to begin with. So they say it's 'irrelevant' because it's not giving them what they want or people just don't care. It sucks. :/ ...No wonder there are more ardent MJ fans... |

This is as bad as when I hear people say to others "go kill yourself" or "drink bleach" Just the lack of respect for another person's value is disgusting. Going to church doesn’t make you a Christian, any more than standing in a garage makes you a car. |

What context are you referring to?
In many ways, people can become "irrelevant"...as artists, as politicians, as parents, as anything else that you may at one time be in a position of fame/power/authority/whatever, and then for one reason or another you lose your "relevance" in that field.
As far as just being a human being...I've NEVER heard that phrase being used in that context.
Even if you're a serial killer on death row, you're still "relevant" in one way or another. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! |

I'm hoping that it's the start of a trend where we all talk like Prince and Morris Day do in the "Stories About Prince" blog. I look forward to shouting "Objection! Irrelevant! Badgering the witness!" as parts of a normal conversation.

This is the only context in which I've heard -- and have once or twice used -- the phrase as well.
That said, it is pretty harsh. I could certainly get my point across in a less acerbic way. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ
πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.” |

What excatly do you mean by that? Is it because maybe album sales start to slip? I've even heard people say Madonna and Prince are irrelevant. I'm guessing it's because they are older now and less popular than they were in the 80s and 90s but I don't see how this makes them irrelevant. They are still artists making music, whether they are popular or not, is irrelevant lol! |

I would say that...using Madonna and Prince for example...where once upon a time they were pop megastars who influenced not only the music of the day, but also the fashion and to some extent culture itself...nowadays their "relevance" has waned to the point where only diehard fans are keeping tabs on their comings & goings. Their influence in music today is non-existent. That is my take on it.
Take as a further example; Phil Collins. Back then, he was relevant. He sold music, he made appearances, he entertained and people were interested. Today, I honestly couldn't tell you whether he's dead, alive or coked out in a McDonald's bathroom listening to the Muzac rendition of "Another Day In Paradise".

Damn that's raw! I hear what you're saying but does that make Phil Collins irrelevant?? People like Phil Collins, Madge and Prince still have more talent in their pinky's than most of these so called artists today. To me, Taylor Swift is more irrelevant than Taylor Dayne who technically hasn't had a "hit"in years. I could care less what Taylor Swift thinks about anything. |

That's different than what I was referring to. I specifically was talking about relevance in any particular field (Music, Politics, Art, etc.).
Phil Collins will always be relevant as a human being...I mentioned that originally...and to certain individuals they may hold personal relevance. But in the field of Music, TODAY, Phil Collins is largely irrelevant while Taylor Swift is VERY relevant. Sad, but true.

Taylor Swift? Relevant? Maybe to the teeny bops. Just because she's rolling in the dough doesn't make her relevant in my books. Irrelevant is a highly subjective expression, no? Honestly, I don't get TS at all. IMO, there's something very spooky about her.
To you personally she may be irrelevant, but not to the music industry.
Take this for example;
One of the best artists that I know was my high school Art teacher. IMO, she was an amazing artist, and impacted me at a time when I was very much into art. In my life, she is a relevant artist. But for the Art world? Her name means nothing. She is irrelevant.
It's subjective to a point...it all depends on the CONTEXT in which you are gauging the individual's so-called "relevance". By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! |

I hear what you're saying and I understand where you're coming from.
*
However, IMO, it all comes down to where each person perceives / believes "relevance" comes from. To me, relevance is not determined by the music industry, how many sales I make online, what the neighbors think of me, people's opinions, etc. My relevance comes from above (not from this world). Therefore, it simply doesn't matter to me who thinks I'm (or anyone else is) relevant or irrelevant. Their opinions don't matter to me.
*
Just as an FYI, I usually don't gauge anyone using those terms, "relevant" or "irrelevant". It's not something I normally do. |

That phrase probably came from Evelyn from "Basketball Wives", and so it caught on. |

As far as wresting goes, then Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson must be irrelevant here, because I didn't get one response on my post |
