Cracking Your Genetic Code

http://video.pbs.org/video/2215641935/

Just watched this doc on Amazon, and am seriously giving some thought to getting a DNA test done (two tests really, me and my son). It's only $99 to find out a great deal about yourself, where/what you come from and what you might expect in terms of health/medical issues.

https://www.23andme.com/

My question is would you, knowing that it might contain less than favorable results, get a DNA test done? hmmm

Considering how black folks history has been stolen and destroyed this test should be FREE.

Yes, I've considered getting it done for ancestral / genealogy purposes (not for medical reasons). Sheer curiousity I guess. I think it would be fun. wink

I had a paternal DNA test done in 2000. Long story I won't go into. However, it wasn't cheap. Back then it was $500.00 via a DNA lab in OH just to confirm who my father was. OY VEY! rolleyes

Same here (for ALL the resons you mentioned).

And yeah, in the doc it mentions how technology is pushing down the price so it can be "affordable" to everyone.

Yes, competition helps as well. I'm a big believer in a FREE market. smile

*

In my case, I actually should have gotten ahold of Maury Povich to see if I could get on the show. I think I would have qualified and Maury would have paid for the DNA test. lol

Making light (at this point) is A-OK with me. It wasn't so funny back then disbelief and the story behind it isn't funny. However, laughter is soothing and good medicine. I love to laugh. lol

I've done some historical research on my female line.

And I'm intrigued by all these women.

Because one or two generation of my ancestors had no registered father to their children, I am tempted to do some DNA research.

Because I do have an idea about the father of these children. Based on physical features and a photo that was published on the internet.

I'm not sure if I ever will.

If you would do it, why would you want to do it?

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Were you happy with the results when you knew for sure who your father is?

I'm intrigued to do it actually.

Not sure whether clinics in UK conduct these tests or not, though.

I think it would be interesting and fun. More than likely, I won't end up doing it but you never know. wink

*

I have a relative in my family who's done a lot of research on our family (especially on my maternal side). I've also done some genealogy myself. I wish I had more time for it but unfortunately I don't. There's only so much time in a day. cool

*

No, Mr. Nelson is not my father (I'll call him DN). The man who has always been known as my father is my father (RR).

*

I was only happy or relieved with the results because it simplifies things for me (record wise). My father has always been absentee and disinterested in my life. I'm his eldest child and only daughter. He pulled a whopper on me in the past 5 years or so. I won't bore you with the details. But, let's just say, what limited contact we ever had in the past has now been completely broken off. It's for the best.

*

So, in a nutshell, would I have been happy if DN had been proven to be my father? The answer to that is YES. From what I hear from everyone who has known him over the years, he's a wonderful person, loving, sweet, kind, loves his kids, grandkids etc. He has 4 sons and no daughters. He always wanted a daughter but it wasn't meant to be.

*

Looks wise, my coloring and everything is more like DN. I don't look like my father.

Hi there,

I'm not sure if I understood your post.

Who is DN?

And what is "pulled a whopper on me"?

I've done some research through "my heritage". And yes, it costs a lot of time.

One of my dreams is to write about the lives of my ancestor mothers.

I think it's interesting to aproach history from a personal aspect.

I'm sorry to hear you don't have contact with your father.

I will see my mother tomorrow again. And I know she will make hurtful remarks, I still do want to see her. Also because she does not realize she hurts me. And, I sort of accepted her for the way she is. Same with my father.

My luck is that both my parents have shown some reflection on their past behavior. And my mom has apologized sincerely. And my dad indirectly. He is a wonderful man, shows me a lot of love and I cherish that. And I don't expect them to be superman or superwoman.

And they try to not be degrading to me. Especially my dad really makes sure he's positive to me. Also because I tell him to not be negative to me anymore.

I'm very sorry that you don't have that opportunity to establish some sort of reasonable relation with your parents.

On the other hand, you seem to handle life very well anyways.

Do you have kids of your own?

Got to go.

I want to fix my llife up, so I should not hang around the org to much.

Need to do some DIY and admin.

Wish you well hug
