He is taking a break. He is not quitting being an actor.

My first reaction to this news was because I like him. But then, his more recent movies I haven't enjoyed so much, with the exception of "Alice in Wonderland", the box office flop "The Lone Ranger" (I thought it was funny ). I enjoyed the first 3 PotC, and could have beat somebody down with a rubber mallet after seeing the 4th one I was so mad when I left the theater, I'm not excited about the 5th installment, a tidbit curious, but not excited. I have recently watched "Blow" and "Benny and Joon", he's so wonderfully quirky. So, I guess if at this point he wants to try his hand at other things, I wish him the best, we all need a change sometimes.

I feel you!!!! I love Johnny but lately his movies have not been that impressive...at least not impressive enough for me to go to the movies to see it. I've even lost interest with the Pirates of the Carribean installments...I surely wasn't going to go see him look even more unrecognizable in The Lone Ranger. But like you, I love his quirky movie roles..."Edward Scissorhands", "Blow", "Secret Window", "Chocolat" and my most favorite quirky Johnny role ever is "What's Eating Gilbert Grape".

I've loved Alice In Wonderland and Lone Ranger but other than that his acting has been stale lately. Hopefully he'll be a better actor when he returns.

The Lone Ranger was a fun movie not a great movie, but so was Pirates of the Caribbean.

Johnny is an okay actor.

benny & joon was one of his best movies IMO.

The Hidden Window was awesome and Sleepy Hollow.

You're not the only one. I've NEVER liked him either for the exact reasons that you stated. He just looks creepy to me.

I like when Johnny Depp creates his own characters. Him being Tonto and Barnabas really missed the mark for me.

That said, Depp does says interesting things occasionally. If he can string together two or three coherent sentences, perhaps he'd make a decent writer.

He quit acting years ago but he has still been showing up to collect paychecks.

I only like Ed Wood out of all his films. Fuck everything else he's done.

i love me some johnny depp. sorry he's leaving the big screen, love watching him. but maybe he'll focus on music, that was how he was originally discovered, wasn't it?
