Windows OS XP / Office 2003: One Year Left for Suport

That's right folks, the Windows XP supports ends in a year, 2014.

Without critical Windows XP security updates, your PC may become vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software which can steal or damage your data and information. Anti-virus software will also not be able to fully protect you once Windows XP itself is unsupported.

What are your alternatives?

1. Purchase a new PC or Mac

2. Or you could use a LInux Distro

Make sure your computer doesn't end up in a landfill... hand it over to Best Buy or any other stores that take old electronic/computers off your hands to be reycled.

Depending on the specs of your computer... Linux Distros: Lubuntu, Mint (Mate), Peppermint, or Puppy could be used. Simple go to these sights burn a CD and use the "Live" version ( you can use the Linux Distro without downloading it) to see which one works best for your computer.

I have a decade plus old Windows XP notebook... I'm going to checkout Lunbuntu, Peppermint and Puppy distros and see how they work. geek

I've never been a huge fan of Windows XP, but I see it everywhere even now.
I thought Windows seven was nice, but a bit slutty looking.

Windows 8 just looks....misfired.
II'm assuming Windows 8.1 or Windows 9 or whatever

will be a leap forward, correcting all the misteps of 8.
I don't see MS going backwards with the interface. But,

they do need to go forward.

I'm intersted in Linux mainly because it uses so few resources in

comparison to Windows, but it seems still too geeky for me.
I mean, it looks polished, but I'm afraid that I would have

too steep a learning curve as far as working under the hood.

With my mac, I have very seldom had to to into a script interface

to do anything. And, I love my Mac, but I don't want to be tied

to one platform.

Lastly, I LOVE Microsoft's office Suite, but I've noticed google docs

does almost everything that I would need (almost) for most

of my office needs.

And, Apple's pages is far, far, faaaarrrrrr nicer than word, if lacking

in some of it's power user features.

You don't have to buy a new computer if you just want a new OS. OK, if your PC is very old a new OS might not run properly, but if it's only a few years old there's no need for new hardware.

I would never give my whole PC away for recycling.

Always keep your harddrives and destroy them yourself! Data can't be fully erased, experts can make them visible again. Then all your personal data, passwords, photos, etc. can be misused by others.

Thank you.
I have a six year old eeebox with limited RAM and hard drive space.

It currently has Windows XP on it, but runs slow as hell, especially

if I'm lauching Office.

I have Windows xp on it, because of one applicaiton. Ages of Mythology falloff

boxed

But, I'd like a faster runing compuer, and not to toil with the problems that I

face with XP. That shit got a virus after one weeks' worth of use, AND with

Nortan AV installed. I cleaned the virus with Kapersky, but it was a bear, because

I had to remove Norton to do it.

I really don't want a home PC to be something that I have to babysit.

While you're testing out Linux Distros for your notebook, I also like to recommend AntiX. Not only is it an excellent choice for laptops, it's perfect for old desktops as well. In term of being lightweight, AntiX is faster than Puppy. cool

I was assuming everyone would know to destroy their HDD... one should never assume, I guess. smile

I don't anyone who would wants to upgrade their XP to Vista (if they can) and I doubt most XP machines can run Windows 7 smoothly. So your alternatives are buy newPC, use XP with all of its vulnerabilities, or go Linux.

nod Yes we will.

If I can grasp Linux anyone can. lol

I had some stops and starts with Linux over the years because I really didn't wanna think or I wanted a solutions.... right now. What's changed? Linux has evolved so and with just little bit of effort and asking others for help / questions the learning curve wasn't as steep as I once thought.

Maybe my first video(s) on my new YouTube channel will be experimenting with "Live Distros"... then picking one and showing others how download and offer solutions on any issues. hmmm

imago: try Xubuntu, as well as the others that TD3 suggested (never used them myself). That one doesn't have Libre Office, but Abiword and Gnumeric, which are lightweight softwares. You can get a live CD, so you won't have to install anything. LEt us know (PM if you want), how it went! smile

Oh, and btw it's possible, with some caveats, to run Windoze software in Linux, so you may not have to give up your game! smile Install it first!

antiX its been a while since I've used a "Live" CD and my internet didn't connect out of the box Tony! This makes me have to think, problem solve. mad I'm kidding, what little I've seen I've liked; I'm not yet connected to the net but I'll figure it out.

Q4OS 0.5.0 someone told me about; it suppose to work just like XP. hmm I'll try it out and see how and if it works.
