my "cats" horror story . Let me start off by saying I have never been a big fan of cats . I have had cats - growing up ... didnt mind them .. but also ... just never really got attached to them .
Fast forward . Kids . and yes . they wanted a cat . Soooo - about 2 years ago we get a cat for christmas ... it was kinda almost a kitten but maybe alil bigger ... like 12 weeks ... etc ... it was one of those orange cats ... like Morris from the TV commercials . Great cat .
We had this cat for like 8 months ... and ... kids want another cat /kitten ... and one day - sure enough ... someone up the street finds a sweet lil kitty in the window well ....
so we adopt this one . It was small . And black . (i called it stinker ) .
After a week or 2 - we get the cats together ... or kitten and cat ... and they seem ok ... of course the lil black kitty torments the orange cat ... ok ... they seem ok ... and even sleep together some places etc .
One day ... after i go to work , i get a frantic call from my wife ... the orange cat was playing etc ... and just keeled over ... yes the stinker gave him a heart attack or somethin ...
so now we have this lil black cat ... it is like nov 20 or so ... and ... guess what ... the kids wanna get another kitten for xmas .
so my wife looks into it ... from a "rescue" place ... and sure enough they have 2 new kittens bro and sis ... that they just got in ... and the girl wants my wife to take both ... these cats are white cats with spots .
So now ... 12/2013 or so .... I have 3 kittens essentially . Well . We slowly acclimate them .. they seem to be getting along ... using the litter box etc ... and well they have the full run of the house ...
what happens ? well .... we find out that they are peeing (oh i forgot to mention at some point a few months later all 3 of them do get fixed ).... so now they have peed all over the house ... pretty much ruined my basement furniture ... yes i threw out 2 couches and a love seat ....
anyone know any way to get rid of this ... short of leaving the door open and letting the cats out . At this point i wanna just let them live out on the family farm ... seems like the rather humane way to let them go . I realize it isnt the rational "animal welfare" kinda thing to do ... but at this point now i cant even use my basement ... it is so horrible ...
any cat lovers have any ideas ... i never had a cat that peed in the house ... yet alone 3 . ugh . nastay . Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I had a cat growing up. Not once did it ever enter the house. Always stayed nearby. That's honestly the only option I can think of other than selling them or giving them away. There's always a risk of the cat being killed by something outside though (which eventually did happen to my cat)

The moral of the story is: don't always give your children what they want! Sure, kittens look very very sweet, but putting cats who are strangers to one another in one house is asking for trouble.

I cannot recommend a solution for you, unfortunately. But why is it that, only as adults, do we find out the "horror story" of having pets? As a kid, when we had pets growing up, I never even knew about cats marking their territory by pissing all over things. I did not know about animals going into heat. And I was completely clueless about dogs having anal scent glands. I'm so creeped out by it all, I do not have any pets now as an adult.

Sounds like the marking of territory type of thing. I had two cats in the same house once. Both of them were male, strictly indoor cats and both were fixed. Other than the constant fighting, they never felt the need to mark their territory by urninating outside of their litter boxes. But, some cats do.

I agree, it sounds like the cats are marking their territory. I love the show "My Cat From Hell"; I watch it all the time.
There is a couple that I pet sit for who are going through what the OP has posted about. They have 12 or 13 cats, and all was fine until they brought in a black cat that they named "Rocky". Ever since then, Rocky and another one (or more) of the cats have been urinating/spraying around the house. I was over there pet sitting the other day, and one of the cats sprayed right into the electrical outlet! RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Hmmm, could be marking their territory, or just trying to tell you something. Cats are VERY picky about their litter box and brand of litter. If you have recently changed brands, you might want to try changing back. Or if their litter box isn't clean, they will let you know by going elsewhere. Adding another litter box closer to where they are peeing might also help. If they use it, you can slowly move it back to where you want it to be. There is a spray you can get at the pet store that eliminates the urine odour. This is a really good idea cuz if the smell even a hint of it, they will go in the same place. Yes, I've done some research on the subject...My son is in charge of cleaning the litter box, and sometimes "forgets to do it" for a while. Our cat lets him know this is not cool by peeing on his bed...once while he was in it!
