I was astounded by this story over the weekend. Absolutely amazing that this happened.

Shouldn't the referee have been, ya know, in prison?

I'm going to assume this all happened quickly. The referee stabs the player, after a disagreement about a call... I'll assume that ref made the call. Then the fans or the mob pounced on the ref... just crazy. (smh)

The US has its issues...racism, Snowdo, tea party.....but at least our refs arent getting quartered. Gotta love that. Thought refs are facing a dramatic increase in aassaults by players and spectators according to HBOs inside sports.

I think JoeTyler's point is that Brazil is big enough that the entire country shouldn't be implicated in this ostensibly isolated event. He's right. [Edited 7/8/13 21:07pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Or the U.S. True, but if I was forced to choose between the US and Canada which would more likely have a situation like this occur, I'd say the US.

[Edited 7/8/13 21:07pm] It doesn't imply the entire countries this bad but you never hear situations like this happening in other major countries

Honestly, we never hear of situations like this happening anywhere outside of the context of war. I think this sort of thing would raise eyebrows pretty much wherever it happened. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

my husband is from brazil and i lived in brazil, as well as traveled there many times. i have never heard of anything like this happening before while i was living there or visiting. thank God! this isn't something that happens everyday there. there are a lot of protests happening in brazil right now, people are frustrated with the governement corruption there. which is a huge problem. beyond the protests happening, brazil is a beautiful country with wonderful, loving and friendly people. you can't judge a whole culture of people based on this. be kind, be a friend, not a bully.

While this story is shocking and macabre, I'm not surprised. I visited Rio in 1986, and the level of poverty within sight of our luxury hotel was appalling. The attitudede toward women and violence was appallingg. It was considered quite acceptable for a husband to kill his wife if he even suspected her of adultery. My tour guide told me stories of local citizens infected with the AIDS virus deliberating infecting others with contaminated needles just for the hell of it.

Exactly, it is an outrageous story, and it happened in Brazil. Where it happened doesn't really matter, but naturally it's part of the story. My Legacy

Did they eat the referee in Brazil or just cut off his head like they did in Canada?
