Dialect in the US - This is so cool!

This is the coolest thing! http://spark-1590165977.u...urveyMaps/

It's taken up my whole work day so far... it has a bunch of maps showing varieties in dialect in the US... from what words you use to pronunciation.

So neat that I had to share

(Oh, and I couldn't get it to work in Explorer, so you might want to try Chrome or Firefox)

Bubbler! woot!
We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I had never heard "the Devil's beating his wife" for rain when the sun is shining until my friend and I were looking at this... she was looking at me like I was crazy cause I didn't know that was what it was called.

I wonder where the phrase came from...

My parents say Worsh, while the kids say Wash.

At first I was like, "What the hell does that mean?" Then I remembered there are some folk who actually talk that way. confused

And the one about rain during sunshine, "The devil is whipping his wife's ass!" I'd never heard that until I moved to Maryland from New Jersey, Which leads me to my own observation about the pronunciation of my now home state, Maryland. Depending on the class and education level of the residents of the metropoliotan Washington, DC area, it can be pronouced several ways. The proper pronunciation is merilənd, but on any given day I hear Murlan. rolleyes
