Bangkok - Who's been?

Hi. Hands up who's been to Bangkok.

What did u think? I know this thread may seem a little self-indulgent, and frankly a little dull. That's because it is.

I was just wondering who on the org had been to the land of smiles and spent some time in the capital city.

It's not so easy to find people around here who have shared similar experiences.

Any thoughts?

If not, u can use this thread as storage space for left-over words from your other posts.

p.s. Putting the thumbs up icon next to my thread makes it better.

Damn, one of the few places in south east Asia that I haven't been to yet! I'll have to see Thailand one of these days.

U should check it out. I love the place. Not sure I could live right in the middle of Bangkok though, but where I am is just great.

I can understand why some people would hate the place though. It is a bit much sometimes.

p.s. Another thread slides its way down the page. lol

biggrin do u live in Bangkok at the moment? A bit scary about those new drug crackdowns lately isn't it? Saw some bits about the police killings on the news...

I've spent a lot of time in Japan... and I've also been to Sth Korea, Malaysia, China... but never Thailand. One of these days... however I'm slightly put off by the thought of the place being overrun with British tourists (no offence!)

Right now I'm still in the UK, but I'm going back to Bangkok in 2 weeks.

Didn't see about the police killings. I don't really worry about that stuff, or indeed the terrorist risks they were talking about before. I don't live in the middle of Bangkok, I live in a quiet suburb (which would seem strange but there really are some).

It is overrun with British tourists in some places, but immediately u get away from those places ie. the beach resorts, trekking places up north, and certain parts of Bangkok, u don't see many westerners.

U don't even have to stay somewhere really quiet to be away from westerners. Bangkok is a huge city so the majority of it is touristless.

I don't see tourists when I go out of the house and around where we live, and when we go to the giant shopping centre we might see one or two western people, but not a swarm.

p.s. It's good that they crack down on drugs. Thailand has an amphetamine epidemic. The tougher the policing the better. That stuff does nobody any good.

What's the Island of Phuket like? Was dreaming about the Banyan Tree Resort & Spa the other day. Looks wonderful.

I've never been to Phuket. Only Samui, Koh Phangan, Pattaya and Hua Hin for beaches.

Pattaya's horrible.

Phuket's supposed to be lovely, but very touristy. I'm sure there are some nice quiet places there too, there always are on Thailand's islands.

Hua Hin is quite nice. It's where middle class Thai people go and it's not as crazy as some of the other places.

What's that for?

Plenty of people have been to Bangkok haven't they?

It's a pretty standard place to go these days, especially for young people.

Yes, what did u think?

I would claim I've been to U.A.E, Jordan, Bangladesh and loads of places just because I'd been there a few hours!

I'm sure it's a wonderful place, but I truly can't comment, since I spent those 2 hours in an airport in Bangkok, lol... so unless you want a report on the airport... I don't think I'm capable of making any kind of valid opinion about Bangkok...

I should of mentioned that before, eh?! wink

Nah. Depends where u are. I live in Talingchan, in a suburb on the western edge of Bangkok. Where I live is actually very quiet and the air even feels a little different. It only takes me 15 minutes in a taxi and I can go to one of the Central shopping centres to do my shopping and stuff and then I go home.

I don't tend to go to the touristy areas like Sukhumvit, only for meals out or something special.

I never go to Khao San Road because it's full of American wanker travellers (and UK wanker travellers actually, those are the two most wankerish nations there, it seems).

Shitty food? Are u sure it was Bangkok u went to?
Eating suki yaki for 2 with duck, fish, vegetables, noodles, spicy sauce and everything u could think of for well under $10 is shitty?

It's a shame but it seems to me many people miss out when they go to Thailand because they gloss over it. U really need to go again and look for the subtle qualities. The place has its faults for sure but it's a lovely place to stay when u have some cool people to spend time with and u take things nice and easy.

p.s. In 'summer' it's not wet. That's the rainy season. There are three seasons in Bangkok.
