There have been a few times that I woke up in the middle of the night because I thought I smelled coffee or cigarette smoke. I wouldn't worry about brain tumors. My theory is that the thought of the thing you think you smell flitters through your dreaming mind and your brain, in it's crazy, bizarre sleep state, conjures up the smell briefly.

I actually am a cancer survivor and get tumor markers, blood work and scans done ALL THE TIME. There is nothing wrong with me (cancer in remission, actually, for years now). If there was cancer any where, my tests would show it. The phantom smell thing has been happening to me for years. Never during the day, only sometimes when I'm asleep.

That's concerning. I strongly suggest you get checked immediately. That may be an indication of seizures.

It may be nothing, but it's better to be absolutely sure.

How old is the house that you live in? I have heard of strange things like this happening to people who lives in houses that may or may not have ghosts that do this type of thing. That's another possibility. I have heard about this kind of thing happening to a lot of people.

I suffer from the phantom smell of cigarette smoke from time to time. I notice it happens when my sinuses are about to act up. One time I did a sinus rinse, took sinus pressure pills and squirted some Flonase up my nose and I could still smell it. It eventually goes away.

Oh nothing too scary, just that it can allegedly indicate impending strokes, brain heamorages, Parkinson's, Multiple sclerosis or a hungry midnight snacking echo from the underworld.

Ihave read that it may be caused by the acid from your stomach? I use to smell that kind of stuff all the time and then I got my acid reflux under control and the smells went away.

I was just going to post that. It hasn't happened recently but I used to smell cigarette smoke in the middle of the night, when I knew no one around me was smoking.
