What makes you think I'd listen to hair advice from a dirty rotten omnivorous monogamist MAN anyways, eh? Hmm? Bwahahaha. You know you're still my favorite, though. I'm going to put letter beads in my dreads to spell out 'teller' in your honor. . .

I'm a little aprehensive about the maintinence, but I think it'll be ok. I don't mind spending some time on my hair, I just mind having to deal with it in the mornings when I'm late for school/work. If I can fiddle with it while I read or watch TV or whatnot I think I can keep it up. I know the roots have to be fussed with quite a bit. My hair is pretty course and wavy, but I may still give the perm a try. I'm not sure about the braids. . .I don't want a scraggly-braids look. Especially 'cause as the roots grow out and I work on them, I would have scraggly-braids on the end of my hair and dreads at the roots.
Is there a name of the type of perm that would work best? Just make sure it's an alkaline-based perm... those will lift the cuticles to where we'd want them. | |

All the advice has been good so far. As you can see, there are a number of different approaches to starting and maintaining your dreads. I personally didn't need beeswax, but I know of some caucasians who used light amounts of it at the start of the process with good results. If your hair is coarse enough, you may not need it, and if you can avoid it, by all means do. (All things being equal, the less crap you have to throw in your hair, the better.) You can, indeed, cut dreads shorter later on, but I'd allow them sufficient time to very tightly lock before doing so. To make sure they dry sufficiently throughout the shaft, I'd suggest simply blow-drying. Do expect, however, some residual moisture to come trickling out perhaps hours after you think they're completely dry -- dreads are like sponges. But if you heavily blow dry, be sure to restore your hair's natural moisture with some conditioner, oil, etc. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

I've heard repeatedly that wax is NOT necessary & attracts a lot of dust, dirt & lint. Avoid it if you can!!   I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it | |
