I'm thinking of doing my hair in dreadlocks. Any advice? Do you think dreads are sexy? On a white girl?

I think I'm going to go ahead and get them started in the next couple of weeks sometime. I've never done it before, so any advice is appreciated.

Also, if there is any reason I SHOULDN'T get them, advise me now or forever hold your peace.

I personally never had dreadlocks but I did have my hair in braids onetime, if you want to do it then go for it! nod

I think if you decide one day you don't want them anymore, you gotta cut them off... meaning you might be pretty near bald.

Yeah, I have thought about that. But you can grow out the roots for awhile before you cut them off. Requires some planning, though.

You sort of divide your hair up like you were going to braid it, but then you backcomb the sections instead to sort of tangle them up, and then you roll them between your hands a lot to tighten them up. It takes months to get them to look decent, I understand. But one fine day, you have a head of beautiful dreads.

Sure, sure. But is a cool, sweet, sensitive, intelligent, considerate person sexier with or without dreads? smile

I have had locks for the past 3 years going on 4 and I love them to death! Don't let anyone tell you 'how' they are supposed to be. Your hair will do it's own thing once you connect to it. It is very much a transformation in thinking because you are forced to face yourself and how you see yourself.

Those who have low self-esteem or worry about what others say or think about them should not get them.

LOL!

Well, I guess I'm not going for a 'hair' sort of look then. I actually have nice hair, but it's so thick and tangles so easily that it is really hard to deal with. I don't really like having short hair, so the best alternative seems to me to be dreads (braids have to be redone too often).

But that's classic. "Doesn't look like hair". . .biggrin

What is your main reason for wanting dreadlocks? Because of that special someone? Your peer group? Because people will like it? Because people will hate it? Trying to stand out or fit in? What's the deal?

Yeah, I've got that too (ladies, or men who are so inclined, try Jane, "Campfire Girl"). But you really aren't answering my question. wink

I love dreads and they look fine on white people. A friend of mine had them and they were hard to get started and some fell out, but they looked good. Just be prepared that when you are sick of them you have to cut your hair short.

Good luck!

there are plenty of websites that teach you how to start dreads. I would do some research first.

Don't know. Dreads won't make unsexy=sexy.

Trust me, not all black people look good with dreads, so it's not really about race. It's just whether or not they'll look good on you.

Because I like having long hair but mine tangles and is a pain in the ass, and I think it would look better in dreads. I think dreads are really pretty.

The reason I asked about the sexy part is to spark conversation. smile No hairdo is going to make me sexy to people who don't already think I am. But I think most people have an opinion on this, and I'm curious.

The other reason I asked is that I don't know anybody who has dreads, and since they are semi-permanent, I want to do them right.

People are so concerned about my self esteem. . .LOL. . .I appreciate it, but I have more ego than one girl really needs.

Yes, Teller. brick

It's just super thick/coarse/wavy. Doesn't matter what I put in it, it's a pain.

Maybe not, but a bad haircut means you'll be sexy to an even smaller number of people. If you're a beautiful girl with bad hair, people won't think that you're a beautiful girl with bad hair, they'll think, "that girl could be pretty if her hair wasn't all nasty."

What, are you going to test people? If they can deal with stinky, nappy hair, then they can love the person within?

Then again, if all your friends listen to the Dead and grow their own hydroponic, you might be OK. But if you're only doing it because you hate your hair, you might as well just get a mohawk. Or learn to accept yourself, that's what I would recommend.

Sounds like my wife's hair...she cut it off one time and had nothing but regret...

I suggest a part-time pony-tail.
