So, I'm a total noob when it comes to comics. There's so much out there I don't even know where to begin. Can anyone recommend a good series?

I don't think I'm a superhero kinda guy. For what it's worth, I'm mostly into history, supernatural, occult, relationship and satire themes. Does anyone know of some good titles in these types of categories?

Bonus points if the series features gay ninjas

Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Famous British literary characters, Allan Quatermain, Mina Murray, Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll and the Invisible Man, band together to fight crime. Forget the crappy movie from a years back, the books are excellent. There are three volumes I think:

check out love and rockets by gilbert and jaime hernandez, strangers in paradise by terry moore or anything by chester brown. and anything by alan moore.

Palomar: The Heartbreak Soup Stories - Sprawling epic about a Latin American family led by hammer-weilding matriarch Luba. The complete volume is out of print, but I believe the series is currently circulating in separate more digestible volumes. There is a subsequent collected edition of the later Luba stories too. EXCELLENT.

^^^indeed...specifically for your interest in history, check out chester brown's 'louis riel', about some canadian rebel from the past...i forget the details of the story (dates and canadian specifics), but it's true and some great cartooning. look it up...also, i just got michael deforge's 'very casual' in the mail today. it may be 'advanced' reading for a comics noob, but it's an anthology of some pretty great stuff (short bits) and he's a prince fan (he's been on the boards); so of course there's a comic interpretation of a thread from these very message boards.

Ha, we both recommended Love and Rockets and Alan Moore.

I will also agree on Strangers In Paradise which is simply about best friends Francine and Katchoo. The entire series is available in six pocket editions, but a bigger collected volume is supposed to be released later this year.
