Now... the first urge is certainly to laugh, because it's kind of funny.

It might even be a snickering laugh. Wow what a bunch of weirdos! It doesn't even seem to be a primarily sexual thing like the furry animal costume people. Which in some ways in even stranger.

But my wife who took these photos (when she found a Brony convention going on at the hotel she was staying in) said it was very disarming to be around a bunch of people who are so relentlessly positive and fun and welcoming all the time. She found them really enjoyable to be around.

She's been to all kinds of conventions from professional ones to Comic-con/ Sci-Fi type things, and there's always some kind of cliqe-ish thing about, like, we don't like those people, or those are the ones that everybody worships and kisses their ass - she saw none of that at all.

Another friend of mine is a teacher who has a kid that identifies as a brony, and he said, "I see nothing wrong with the post-9/11 generation embracing something completely positive."

Punk and metal underground culture was a reaction to the mainstream culture of the 70s and 80s which was relentlesly nice. It was like, I don't like society so I refuse to be nice. Now, obnoxious or even hateful culture is mainstream, everywhere, from politics to games to entertainment. Going positive is the new rebellion.

I have to say I like it. Whatever gets you through the night, it's all right.
