Thinking about doing an open casting call for "The Biggest Loser"

Found out a couple of days ago that "The Biggest Loser" is holding open casting calls where I live tomorrow.

Then I promptly forgot about it. I saw it on the news again today, and I'm considering going down to be considered.

It's making me really think...AGAIN...about the more than 100 lbs I need to lose and why haven't I done it on my own. I know that I WANT to, but shit in one hand and want in the other and see which one fills up faster.

Want has to be followed by action and it's the action that I'm slacking on. I HATE all the planning. I HATE all the grocery shopping. I've been struggling with this for years. I love Dr. Pepper. I have a sweet tooth that could choke a moose. Everytime I even THINK about changing what I eat I go on the "see food" diet.

So I'm wondering, is it even worth it to go for the call? I'm thinking yes. It would be one of the hardest things I've ever done, but to be able to focus on it, know that I can push myself and not have to worry if I'll overdo it so much I injure myself (because if I do a medic will be right there) or not be able to get up and go to work the next day.

Thoughts?

As someone in the large boat with you, do it, if only to live a little longer for the people you love.

Here's a couple of things I've done without some asshole yelling at me on reality television;

Soda Pop is a killer of humans. The sugar alone is a diabetes countdown and the diet has more chemicals then any person should consume in any quantity. I've switched to tea with no sugar (in different flavors) and some times I'll make lemonaide (with lemons) and go light on the refined sugar, then do a 25 % lemonade to 75% iced tea. You would be suprised at how you don't miss the sugar bacause of the lemon and tea tastes so good with 75% less sugar.

Walk every day for 30 minutes. when that gets boring walk for 30 more. If that gets boring bike ride for an hour. I got really bored with all that (and it was winter) and joined my local YMCA. Now I have this 4 foot blonde woman kickin my ass in a kickboxing class. Talk about work out and she doesn't even yell at me!

Again, why I'm doing it is for the people I care about. Hope this helps!

If you walk for 30 minutes, listening to your iPod with your favorite podcasts, or even an audiobook does the trick.

If you work up to jogging, music normally does the trick.

Go for it NBJ. You might get inspiration at the least.

I gave up sugary drinks as a major food group in my diet a few years ago, they are very damaging.

I just heard a commerical by Kaiser about this great excercise phenomena called Marche, it works miracles, done 30 minutes a day 5 days a week it'll change you life. giggle It's walking in French. The commerical is cute.

My daughter is coming home from college for the summer. With her at home with my youngest, I don't have to rush straight home after work and I could get a walk in on the hillside behind where I work.

In the end, I'm the only one who can do this. PPPPPPPPFFFFFFTTTTTT!!!

I think you should go mainly cause it will probably be really inspiring.

I don't think you should actually go on the show, however. What they do is not healthy and not sustainable. There was a contestant who gave a tell-all after and it's pretty brutal. There are all kinds of criticisms from doctors and what have you that their methods are the opposite of what you should be doing.

No One from The Biggest Loser Can Keep the Weight Off

The Biggest Loser puts extremely overweight people through an intense diet and exercise regimen to see who can shed the most pounds by the end of the show's run. The first few episodes look like a bunch of circus bears doing jumping jacks, but gradually the contestants lose extra weight like car keys on a roller coaster. For instance, first season winner Ryan Benson lost a total of 130 pounds, which is roughly the equivalent of two Goonies (excluding Sloth and Chunk). Who wouldn't be motivated by that?

Why It's Depressing

We'll tell you who wouldn't be motivated -- anyone who has met Ryan Benson in real life. Benson's current weight is around 300 pounds, which is just 30 pounds less than what he weighed at the start of The Biggest Loser.

Benson isn't an anomaly -- almost every Biggest Loser winner has gained back a chunk of the weight he or she lost on the show. The worst example is Season 3 winner Eric Chopin. Chopin began the show clocking in at 400 pounds, and won after successfully dropping 200. Once the show was over, however, Chopin bounced (ahem) right back up to 370 pounds like he got stung by Earth's mightiest bee. It's like some kind of mummy curse the contestants can't escape.

The unfortunate truth is that people on The Biggest Loser don't do anything but train for the entirety of the season -- the show's producers cover all their expenses during filming. It's not like they're going to work and then driving over to the gym to film some sit-ups. They aren't doing anything except training, under constant supervision, for however many weeks production lasts.


"Come on! You can do it! Don't giv- and we're done, peace!"

Once the show is over, they go back to their normal 9-to-5 lives, which typically do not include controlled diet and exercise. They cannot possibly continue a weight loss program as intense as the one on the show, and in all fairness, if you'd spent the past two months sweating through a purple T-shirt with the word "LOSER" written across it while punishingly in-shape people scream into your face about taking responsibility for your love handles, you'd probably drive straight home and order all of the pizza in the world, too, and not just because there's no longer anyone there to keep you from doing it.


"You mean to tell me that perfectly toned professional trainers don't yell at you every day? Stop making excuses."

Wait, it gets better. People who watch the show are more likely to have a...l activity. A recent study showed that the grueling way exercise is portrayed on The Biggest Loser actively discourages viewers from wanting to participate. Basically, overweight people watching the show see other overweight people crying, throwing up, and passing out during their exercise sessions while all of the thin personal trainers just yell and berate them. The end result may be inspirational, but The Biggest Loser seems to go out of its way to make the actual process of weight loss seem like thankless fucking misery.

I becaume quite heavy after I quit smoking about 10 years ago, topping out at around 235lb in 2007, and I'm 5 10" and don't have a lot of muscle mass, so that was quite a heavy weight for me. I started working out regularly in '07 and whittled my way down to 205-210, but I remained stuck at that zone until I started doing long daily brisk walks in 2010. I walked my way down to 175 by the middle of that year and I've maintained that weight since then.

I do an hour and 1/2 of fast, borderline speedwalking every morning of every working day, and another hour or so at the end of the day, and I do 4-5 hours both days on the weekend. That's a lot of time spent walking, and not everyone has room in their life for such things, but I'm able to work it into my own schedule without too much fuss, and it's given me time to digest lots of podcasts & audiobooks. It's certainly not the only path to weight control, but it's been pretty effective for me.

This is so true!~ same goes with celebrity fit club a lot of these celebs went right back to the beer gut after the show lol

I thought about doing it....but my fiancee is so private, I think it would hurt him a bit. I had to think, do I really want to slice myself open and have the world see all my skeletons and dirty laundry?

Getting engaged and planning a wedding has motivated me to lose 30....but I would LOVE to drop 50 more before november....we'll see. my older brother has been really helpful. He's a hobby bodybuilder. He says the key to eating less and feeling less deprived is protein. Dammit....it works! I can't live with out my whey!

Hey, I LOVE soda. I discovered Dr Pepper 10. I love it. But since I've reduced my soda intake, I crave it less. And when i drink it, heartburn! I'm starting to crave it less.

Try this method...My old roomate used to weigh 270. she's now 140. She did it this way. The first year, she cut out just ONE thing. which was Mountain Dew. She drank a 2 liter of that every day! So she started drinking Diet Vanilla Coke....the only diet that she could stand. She also started to drink crystal light with her water. She only did that, and dropped 30 pounds. The next year, she decided to try walking, and lost another 40 that year. The third year, she said screw it, let's eat right and do this! and the remaining fell off!

I'm a real all or nothing personality and won't really do anything unless I immerse myself fully. I am also lazy when it comes to driving somewhere like the gym, which I can't bear to part my money for :nuts:

What's working for me is using calorie count app (boy was that an eyeopener. eek ) and sports tracker app for walking - I do 3.7 miles in an hour each day. I bought some dumb bells and exercise ball and do a session of weights alternate days. I am motivated by the numbers - calorie count gives me a letter grade based on what I eat each day and I don't like getting anything less than an A!

The Internet has free info and ideas everywhere you look. I signed up for about.com 12 weeks to weightloss program. They send an email for the week with what you should be doing and loads of hints and articles to keep motivated.

I like to chart results. Every second week I record weight and measurements from upper arm, bust, waist, hips and upper thigh. I'm seeing results and each week my motivation is renewed!

I started all this because I have back pain from my sedentary lifestyle and decided to strengthen my core muscles. So far much improved!

That's how I started too!


I lost 50 pounds back in 2009 and I'm down another 15 these days. Still want to lose 15 or so more, but I go in fits and starts. I always eat healthy and do my best to exercise, it's just really hard to lose now.

Honestly, NBJ, if you want some support feel free to reach out here or on facebook. I have been through it and I'd love to help. I love the idea mentioned above about changin one small thing. Gradual changes tend to work best for me. Pick one thing and see yourself have that success. Once you realize you can do one thing you'll want to see what else you can do. I promise, all the little things over time will start to add up.

i don't have weight issues but i do understand doing crazy shit that makes no sense to yourself, even though you know it's no good for you... it can be tough to break the cycle

if there's anything i can do, let me know (i mean that).... i just want to see you happy and healthy

i have been working to regain the fitness level i lost after having three surgeries in eighteen months; i bought an exercise bike and wow has it ever helped me! i could only ride for a few minutes when i first got in back in february; now i can go for an hour or more. i'm not quite to the point where i exercise every single day, but i'm getting there. finally! anyone who thinks staying fit is easy has another think coming. and it gets harder as we age.
