The government and authorities can never win. Some people bitch about too much security and others bitch about security failures. Well unfortunately not all terrorist attacks can be prevented and we are actually lucky that compared to other countries there have been relatively few terrorist attacks in the US.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and injured.

It is just you. We're not talking about people going through entrances to a stadium or building, we're talking about a marathon route that's 26 miles long and lined with over 100,000 people coming from all directions. There are many side streets that lead up to the marathon route and both commercial and residential buildings line the street that people can access from the back or side and exit onto the marathon route. So what do you expect police to do, search every bag being carried within a block or two of the entire 26-mile route? The area of the explosions is often extremely crowded during the spring and summer, with both vehicle and foot traffic. What are you gonna do, search people's belongings on public streets throughout the year?

What about Independence Day celebrations? All around the country you have large gatherings of people outdoors watching fireworks and whatnot, what is to prevent someone in one of those crowds from doing something similar? What about shopping malls, do you search everyone's bag as they enter every mall?

Nobody likes to feel vulnerable, but the reality is we are. If somebody is determined to do damage and cause injury there's not a lot we can do about it, other than pay extra attention to our surroundings and report anything that looks suspicious. That's how the car bomb in Times Square was stopped, a pedestrian happened to notice the car and notified the authorities. We were very fortunate that time, but this time we weren't.

I don't have answers to all the security questions and issues that arise for such public events - that's for the city authorities to figure out (and these days they have all the technology they could wish for at their fingertips - in Boston of all places (MIT, etc).

I do recall that for Madonna's huge outdoors 2005 concert in Moscow, the city went out of its way to secure the area, complete with police helicopters circling above and the federal security services on call for the day. And - as sad as it sounds - some main shopping malls in Moscow do have metal doors and check people's bag, same thing for most movie theaters.

Of course I don't know anything about the circumstances and motives in this case, but yes, I wouldn't be surprised if there were accomplices in some circles among the authorities. I don't mean that ALL city staff is corrupt, and I am sure that most people there have been doing their job wholeheartedly. But as a general rule, the bigger the (terrorist) job/attack, the more I suspect such enablers.

As for me, I am actually now in NY. I've never seen or heard anything like this in my total 5.5 years in Boston - which I considered a 'sleepy' town in that respect.

There were "dirty" bombs... reports of victims having ball barrings, nails, scrap metal .... Aaaron Hern (11 years old) has scrap metal in his body... still in surgery.

The Saudi, who is recuperating at a Boston hospital, is in his 20s and is in the United States on a Saudi scholarship to study at a university in the Boston area.

The federal officials’ explanation echoed comments by a Saudi official at the country’s embassy in Washington. The embassy official said that a Saudi national has been questioned as a witness but is not regarded as a suspect. The Saudi official cited information provided to the embassy by U.S. law enforcement officials.

“We’re not aware of any Saudi suspect or Saudi person of interest,” said the Saudi official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the preliminary nature of the information.

He declined to identify the young man, but said he sustained serious burn injuries. The official said the victim is cooperating with U.S. investigators and granted permission for his Boston area apartment to be searched.

“He volunteered to have it searched,” the Saudi official said. “He is fully cooperating with authorities.”

He is one of two Saudi citizens who were injured in the attacks, officials said. The other is a female student who attended the race with her son and husband, and who sustained shrapnel injuries to her legs.

They are among thousands of Saudi nationals who attend college in the United States. The Saudi consulate in New York has dispatched a representative to Boston to meet with the hospitalized Saudi.
