A Pierce County corrections officer is on unpaid administrative leave after prosecutors charged him with bigamy.
Alan L. O’Neill, 41, has been summoned to court March 22 to answer the felony charge.
O’Neill, previously know as Alan Fulk, has worked as a Pierce County corrections for five years, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said this afternoon.
According to charging documents, O’Neill, then known as Fulk, married his first wife in 2001. He reportedly moved out eight years later, but neither he nor his wife filed for divorce, the records show.
In December, he petitioned to change his last name to O’Neill, the charging documents state. Five days later, he married his second wife, also a county employee.
Wife No. 1 was arrested for domestic violence in 2010 after finding out about O’Neill’s relationship with the woman who would become his second wife, the records show. She was never charged.
She later learned O’Neill might have married the woman and called his mother for confirmation, the records state.
“An hour later the defendant arrived at her apartment, and she asked him several times if they were divorced,” the records state. “The defendant said, ‘No, we are still married.’”
O’Neill then allegedly told Wife No. 1 not to tell anybody about his dual marriages, that he would fix it, the documents state.
Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Wife No. 1 apparently found out about Wife No. 2 when Facebook recommended she “friend” the other woman.
“It’s not the crime of the century, but it is a crime,” Lindquist said.
