One time downtown a group of native americans were burning this, chanting and drumming, and this one woman was having a major fit, screaming for security wanting them arrested because she thought they were burning 'weed' despite the fact that everybody was telling her it was sage. We have some seriously neurotic people here sometimes.

Anyway, I love going up to the worldbeat center and watching their ceremonies. Personally, I don't burn it since I don't practice any of the other ceremonial rituals and I'm not a descendent of the kumeyaay tribes, it would feel phony doing it at this late date just for fun.

I just like trying new things , i wanted to see what the pagan/Wicca thing was about . Interesting but I'm glad I decided not to do it

Yeah, and you should while you're young and exploring. I just have reached a point of preserving the sacred, and since I don't know all the reasons "why" it would be very uncomfortable for me to do it.

The above picture may be the white sage? I am not sure. Leaves look like the sage. Different herbs/spices are used depending on ceremony. But I am no expert, I do not pray/smudge with the sacred herbs. I was never taught how but I do remember a little bit from what some of my cousins and friend told me.

Some herbs used can be...White sage, Sweetgrass, Cedar, Lavender, Myrhh and a few other hebs are used for blessings/prayers and sometimes even a mixture (if I remeber correctly... depending on the ceremony).. but don't quote me.

I've had a sage smudge stick in my house since I was 17 years old (damn hippies ). You can choose to believe it or not, but when in the right state of mind (as in, open to it, not high ), I definitely feel like both myself and the area it's burned in has been cleansed afterwards.

Burning it with a large shell, ashtray or even a pot of sand handy is definitely recommended. If you do that there's no fear of burning anything down. You definitely don't want to let it burn too long, though, particularly if it's a large stick. Those suckers start making a lot of smoke once they get going.

NDRU. Yeah, Deadheads and parking lots are who and what introduced me to it. It does occasionally trigger pot smell sense memories for me (or maybe that's the pot), but I don't get the hippie body odor thing at all. Patchouli and amber on the other hand IMMEDIATELY bring to mind long trips in small cars with too many people who haven't washed in far too long.
