Decisions, decisions (shall I move to Linux or just brace the "fallout" from XP?) I've come to a really hard decision on whether or not to upgrade to Linux or not... first of all, I've been managed to work with XP for a long while since it first came out. Now it's allegedly gonna end its support this month next year and Microsoft is practically BEGGING XP users to use Windows 8 and give them money. Knowing Windows is allegedly "virus central", I don't know. And recently I've been tempted to upgrade (freely) to Linux by one particular user ('sup TD3). But it always comes with a price: should I try it and risk probably not being able to use my computer or should I just brace whatever happens with XP. I mean I'm sure there's still people who uses Windows 2000 with no problems from supposed viruses or whatever but I wonder what will be the best decision especially for a hardcore XP user...

In all honesty I'd hold out for Windows 8 v2 (or sp2 or whatever they will call it ). Or upgrade to windows 7.
to be a hardcore Windows support tech/software guy. So, I'm semi-comfortable with Windows even though I swapped to Mac for the last 6 or 7 years already.
Unless I'm way off base, I imagine that with the same hardware resources, Linux would run faster and smoother than XP, no?

I'd definitely upgrade to Windows 7 first and do a dual partition with Linux, either Ubuntu or Mint, because Windows 8 will not allow a clean install of a dual boot of Linux on any fresh Windows 8 computer. It only allows it on an upgrade, because I have both Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04. I have been working on Windows 8 for a few months now, and while it loads really fast it's still clunky on the desktop, and it's really more set up for tablets, though the Win7 desktop can still be accessed, albeit not without its own issues. Like Imago said, Windows 8 will be truly awesome once they issue the first service pack, since it seems Windows never gets its act together until a few months after release. :pc:

I see what you guys mean. When I and my dad struggled to get a new computer after my last computer died (which I now blame it on what was possibly faulty hard drives that petered out), we were thinking of getting a computer with Windows 7, since most people who were once hardcore XP users now use 7 instead of 8 because it was cheaper and easier to use.
Right now, money's too tight to go around looking for a computer with Windows 7 but once we get through this month, we may be able to settle on something.
The last update the computer I got was on March 15...

That's what I was told...lol
But it's a mother to try to install Linux, good God. I could install Linux using Virtual Box (if I wanted to). I probably could install Win 7 doing the same thing but until I see enough tutorials, I'm not gonna risk my computer's life just yet.

For first time Linux user, I strongly recommed using a more user-friendly distro like Linux Mint in a xfce desktop environment. Beginners can learn the ways of Linux a lot easier and safer.

And for the record Timmy, the main reason why I became a Linux User is because I still wanted to use my currently 12+ year-old Gateway desktop PC since I was not ready to buy a new desktop. Also, I already knew in advance like everyone else that Microsoft was going to stop supporting Windows XP.
I also knew that my desktop did NOT meet the recommended requirements for Windows Vista. But I did tryout Vista on a friend's computer and I hated it after a few hours.

I actually read somewhere that Microsoft had actually did stop updating XP in 2009 but they extended security support until 2014. So I've been using XP long after it was considered "dead"! I was thinking of using Linux Mint. I don't know about Ubuntu but Linux Mint sounds real good to use.

My God, my chance to actually convert someone, and..... I can't believe I didn't tell you DEFINITIVELY last time - YOU MUST USE LINUX! I have been a hardcore advocate of Linux to so many ppl, and here's someone on the Prince board I haven't converted!!!!
To address your concerns - you most definitely WILL be able to use your computer after installing Linux, and...... if THAT's not enough - simply get yourself a live CD like Knoppix, or use Ubuntu which will also let you "try" from the DVD before you install, so - no worries as far as fucking up any existing data on your hard drive is concerned....
You'll probably need to Google and study just a little bit if you wanna install (eg. in Linux there's no C:\ drive), but it'll be well worth it!
Let us know how it went. | |

I'll try it later. TD3 also has tried to convert me too.
