The IPhone 5S by fall? WSJ: Apple to begin 'iPhone 5S' production this quarter, less expensive iPhone coming later this year By AppleInsider Staff Apple plans to begin production of its next flagship iPhone this quarter, while the company also has a new, less expensive model in the works for later this year, according to The Wall Street Journal. Source: KGI Securities Purported details about Apple's upcoming smartphone plans were reported by authors Lorraine Luk and Jessica E. Lessin on Tuesday, who revealed that production of a so-called "iPhone 5S" will begin this quarter. That sets Apple's next iPhone up for a launch as soon as this summer, which would be a change from the later iPhone 5 launch Apple instituted last year. In addition, Apple is also said to be working on a less expensive iPhone model with a different casing. That handset will reportedly retain the 4-inch display of the iPhone 5. Tuesday's report doesn't offer any surprising details, but does corroborate with what earlier reports have claimed about Apple's 2013 plans for the iPhone lineup. Parts claimed to be from the "iPhone 5S" were spotted last month, providing further evidence that Apple's next handset could be nearing production. The Journal offered no indication as to whether an "iPhone 5S" might include a fingerprint sensor underneath the home button for secure transactions. Those claims were first made in January by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities, who has a strong track record in predicting Apple's future product pipeline. Apple's current iPhone lineup. As for a cheaper iPhone, speculation has grown that Apple is interested in addressing the low-end smartphone market, particularly in developing countries where customers prefer to purchase unsubsidized handsets without a service contract. It's believed that such a device would be targeted at China and Brazil, in particular. That handset is said to have plastic or polycarbonate body that would allow Apple to sell the device at a lower cost. An cheaper iPhone would help apple emerge in the Asian markets for sure. All the upper class Thais own iPhones here, and you rarely see anyone carrying anything else.
But the working class Thais own a mix of phones (though even they attempt to own iPhones). A cheaper iPhone might emerge as an instant hit.
HOWEVER, many Asians here (Japanese, Thais, etc.) consider 'cheaper' versions of something to be less desirable, and they will often save up and pay insane amounts of money for the 'better' product, so it remains to be seen if this is a hit in all Asian countries.
To a lesser extent the iPhone here has an 'iPod' phenomenon. Back in 06/07ish when the Zune, aka iPod killer was on the market, kids in the US were not asking for an 'mp3' player for Christmas-- they were asking for an iPod. Same thing here--kids aren't looking for a smartphone, they're looking specifcally for an iPhone.
The rumor now is that Johny Ivy and his team have pushed back the iOS 7 production date due to major interface enhancements. This probably pushes the availability of any major model update until fall. I would imagine that Apple may have a sluggish summer, and a pretty upbeat fall. Eitherway , I love this renewed 'ship when ready' strategy. Jobs pushed back the original iPhone release to 'get it right' and implemented multi-tasking after competitors on iOS to 'get it right' with regards to battery life. I'm hoping Ivy and team do the same.
However, rumor has it that product releases for the next 4 years are all Jobs' projects?
I'm leaning more and more towards getting an iPad mini now. When Apple first introduced the device and revolutionized the tablet market, I thought the popularit was just because it was Apple. I had no idea why anyone would want a tablet--it looks like a toy to me. But after seeing friends used it for practical applications, and the fact that the Mini is the perfect size for me, I think I may end up getting one after gen 2 is released. | |

are they bringing out one with retina display soon? I was looking at one in the apple store, and I LOVE the weight of it (iPad regular is like a brick) but I found the screen not as sharp as what I would expect. I'm the mistake you wanna make | |

honestly i really don't know. I thought the ipad mini was supposed to have the retina display, but i thought that aspect didnt matter much because of it's size. I'm just waiting, like a new car that comes out, for the kinks to be ironed out before I make an up grade. Besides what I got works for me just fine atm. I am waiting for the Sony Xperia Z to come to America. I have been stalking this phone since BEFORE its Japan-Euro release! Its like the 007 phone but even newer and better with a 14mp (highest on the market) camera and its waterproof (first on the market), which is great because I always accidently wash my phone in the laundry! This is basically Sony trying to comeback as they did when they invented the walkman. There is even a walkman app which is great because itunes can go die in a fire for all I care...
I'd just get it unlocked overseas but I can only afford the subsidized 2 year contract price ($200).

I'm gonna get one of these too. I still have an iphone, but i'm not impressed with the 5. This xperia seems to blow the iphone 5 away. when i saw it in the shop i was even more impressed. beautiful design | |

I read about this the other day.
Apparently Sony couldn't get enough interest from carriers, so they plan to sell it unlocked for like $600 or more.
It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory! | |
