I was a vegetarian for years... No meat whatsoever, no fish.
I drank Soy Milk and still do.

I got really ill, I wasn't getting the protein my body needed. Supplements weren't working...

Same thing happened to me Sag. I was literally passing out because my blood sugar would drop so low. I needed protein that would stay with me longer than soy or beans.

Same here... I became one because my stomach ached from trying to digest the stuff. It seems that dairy is beginning to have the same effect.

I hear you on the dairy, LaV. I haven't been able to drink whole or even 2% milk in years. I haven't tried soy milk yet, but I'm glad stores are now making fat free, lactose free milk, I'm dedicated to that stuff. Lactaid is too expensive!

Soy milk is actually not bad at all. The consistency is a little thick tho so I would thin it with some water.

Meat is a regular part of my diet, but I'm a major animal lover and it does bother me. But unless I became a Vegan it wouldn't make much sense to me. The conditions which animals are raised for dairy products are just as bad as the ways they are killed for meat.

I try to tune out the whole process of what happens to an animal before it makes its way to my plate. I don't have the time to eat such a carefully restricted diet that excludes all animal products. And when you really look at the food you're eating, alot of stuff you may think is Vegan actually contains animal products.

Even household products and other non food items contain animal products. They're everywhere.

If I were on Survivor though or something like that, where I had to kill my own animals for food, I would definitely stick to a Vegan diet. I could never kill another animal, I'd loose my appetite by the time I was done.

I think I'm gonna do it gradually, first just chicken and fish, no red meats or pork, then eventually no fish or chicken, just soy milk and tofu, I won't have to worry about getting fat any time soon lol

co-sign. It's really hard for me to quit meat though, I've tried it lots of times. I feel terrible about it- looking at a defrosted chicken or a pork chop, etc. That was a BODY that was slaughtered. shake

I loved eating animals/animal products. I have a total garbage gut and can eat anything I want.

But my gawddamn conscience got in the way, and now I'm a vegan.

I don't find it to be that hard, but it helps that I live in a city (Seattle) where there are a ton of veg restaurants and healthy grocery stores to choose from.

I went veg very gradually, and I think for most people that is easier, though some do just go "cold tofurky". biggrin During the transition I ate quite a bit of fake meat-- Teller, when you're used to planning meals around animals, it's much easier to substitute something familiar-- but I've really come to find that a good variety of fresh international foods is more satisfying than a fake chicken nugget. Though I do always have Boca Burgers in the freezer for the 'I can't bear to cook tonight' moments. I like St. Yves soy sausage for breakfast too; I don't like to have all-carb breakfasts. Even as a vegan I eat more protein than I need, 'cause I like it and it makes me feel full longer. And I'm too damn lazy to actually COOK something for breakfast. So 'soysage' is handy.

The thing that I like the least about being vegan is something Teller mentions: it's really nice to be able to eat whatever is put in front of you, out of courtesty to your host if nothing else. Sometimes people prepare things for me to eat not knowing that I'm veg, and I feel so bad turning them down. I've just learned to adapt to that; I try to warn people, and insist that people not bother with cooking for me, and if they insist and they get something slightly wrong (use margarine with whey in it or something) I just overlook it and eat what they gave me in the name of good vegan public relations. smile

He does? shocked

lol

It shouldn't be a shock really. Many doctors advocate meat for their patient's diets, and one reason (or maybe the main reason) is because of the high level of protein that they say you can't get with any other food. Don't take it from me, ask a bunch of doctors, most will say the same thing. It's not uncommon at all.

Personally, I don't eat a lot of red meat, and I don't have the appetite for meat every day of the week. Some people go through the extreme of eating it everyday or almost everyday, and I don't think even a doctor would reccommend that. For me it's all about striving for moderation. I like fish and seafood more than any other meat.

It is very difficult where I live because there are no vegtarian restaurants (even anything close) and only one shop that sells a wide range of vegetarian food (at very high prices). I try to stock up when I go to the Detroit area ~ have you tried Amy's frozen food? Organic and vegetarian (some vegan) and YUMMY!!!

A lot of vegans and vegetarians are being told by their doctors to start eating some meat, at least fish and chicken. That soy protein shit can only go so far.

Phuck NO!!! I need a steak every now and then. In a previous life i was a T-REX! Vegans always talk about meat eaters killing animals when the kill plants(which are living things too). Plus we wouldn't have the teeth of meat eaters if we were not meant to eat meat.

It is true that a lot of doctors are fairly ignorant about nutrition.

However, my doctor is thrilled that I'm a vegan, and there are plenty of veg medical professionals.

You don't need to eat animals for protein. It's a myth. One that WON'T DIE because of ignorant, devensive fools.

Plants don't suffer. It's not about killing, it's about causing suffering.

We don't have the teeth of meat eaters. Our canines are puny and we have flat molars for grinding. Our teeth look more like horse teeth than cat teeth.

Our closest nonhuman animal relatives are primates who are primarily vegan. They will eat meat when readily available, but that is infrequently, so they mostly eat plants and bugs. They never eat dairy, because the wild cows won't hold still. They get along just fine. Not that I'm recommending you eat like a chimp. Just don't use the "it's natural for us to eat an animal-based diet" bullshit, because the typical American diet, vegan or omnivorous, has nothing to do with "nature".

In scientific circles it was always assumed that the first people ate meat, says paleontologist John de Vos from the Naturalis museum in Leiden, the Netherlands. But two years ago, sound scientific evidence for this claim was found.
In fossil remains of the Australopithecus Africanus, the predecessor of man, researchers found carbon compounds that relate directly to meat consumption. This puts an end to all the stories that prehistoric man lived off fruits and vegetables.
Eating meat is a natural condition of man. The first human tools were knives to scrape the meat off bones. 'That doesn't surprise me at all, says De Vos. 'We know that apes, such as chimpanzees also eat meat on occasion.' Neanderthal man, one of the prehistoric men that didn't survive, had a diet that consisted almost exclusively of meat.

For the Australopithecus, eating meat was not so much a choice, as a necessity caused by evolution. Three million years ago a long drought occurred in eastern Africa, the cradle of humanity. The rain forest turned into savannah.
Then two things happened at once, De Vos explains. Man started walking upright and eating meat. ´Australopithecus had to travel greater distances on the Savannah, which prompted him to walk upright. This cost more energy, which is easier to obtain from meat than from vegetable matter. 'On top of that, there was less food to find on the Savannah than there was in the jungle. They had no choice.
In this stage of becoming human, the hominid brain also went through a strong development. This is the reason why some researchers think that meat, a rich source of protein, is good for the development of the brain. To this day, this theory has not been contradicted by the Dutch Information Bureau on Meat, but it is based on nothing according to De Vos.
