Carpenter never reached the scarey heights he did with "Halloween" ever again, but he himself has made his own handful of extremely entertaining "funhouse" type horror/comedy/scifi that are tongue in cheek films (Prince of Darkness, They Live, and I can't remember name of the one with Sam Neil).

"In The Mouth Of Madness"... A CLASSIC!

A friend was over with his kids (7 and 8 year olds) so I put on my girls DVD of "Neverending Story" (hadn't seen that shit since I was 8 years old and loved it back then...)

That shit blew my mind in how shitty that shit is... That movie did not age well... I almost felt embarrassed watching it while these kids were looking at me like "WTF man?!"...

So I just stopped it halfway and put "Eraserhead" on just to fuck with them... That movie aged perfectly...

Neversin.

Never Ending Story and Labyrinth were horrible movies at the time... and both to my surprise seem to be well regarded through rosey notalgia. Legend ius pretty bad too, but I have so much respect for the visual talent of Ridley Scott, I still bought it on blu!

Also... I dislike Star Trek 3, 4 and The Goonies, and Gremlins.

All irritating to me when I saw them. Gremlins 2 on the other hand has some sharp humor and is epic. And has Christopher Lee.

it's ok if you don't like The Thing, but don't pretend that the movie is not rewarded as a classic; I couldn't care less if the movie was not a hit back in 1982 (american audiences??? L-O-L). Just look how revered the Thing is on RottenTomatoes or AllMovie

period

I love The Thing. That's why I bought it. That's why I bought the Cinefantastique that covers it back in the day. But I know it doesn't quite work for me as a solid movie. I'm not saying it has aged badly by any means. In fact it is getting better like wine...

but...

It didn't hit anywhere in the world. The only reason it's a classic now is in comparison to some contemporary attempts at scifi horror. But if you put in context of those other two classic movies or Carpenter's own "Halloween", it just doesn't quite work as horror. It has great sets, great photography, sound design, score, casting, and effects... but the flaw is in the script. But it is MUCH BETTER than the revamp prequel that came out last year.

I was not there back in 1982, but I guess The Thing was compared unfavorably with Alien; after all, it was not only a remake, but also another "8-9 guys against a lethal/shadowy alien" sci-fi/horror movie...

Both "Blade Runner" and "Tron" (same summer of '82, my favorite summer form childhood) are considered classics now by legions of fanboys, but if you really look at both, they have everything BUT a functional compelling plot. In fact, if you outline the story of "Blade Runner" it's quite flimsy, a cake that didn't rise. But it's frosted up with 12 inches of visuals and sound design and poetic dialog and an incredible performance by Rutger Hauer. It took the style of the last third of "Apocalypse Now" and applied it to the scifi setting and seduced fanboys years later.

Blade Runner has a rather slow pace (even slower than Alien) and many scenes just seem glorified (arrogant even), sometimes it even seems directed by Stanley Kubrick lol

I keep shit REAL, I bought "Westworld" but would never ever buy "The Terminator". You know what I mean?

-"Draw!"

wink

As a kid I loved "Never Ending Story", liked "Labyrinth" only for Jeniffer Connelly and Bowie being weird... But then again I hated shit like "E.T." and other such Spielberg drivel and still do... Nostalgia's weird...

Never liked "Legend" and still don't get what people like about it...

And in all honesty I think Ridley Scott just got lucky with "Alien" and "Blade Runner" (learned to love "Blade Runner" when my dad sneaked a copy of a workprint home...) after those he never made anything of interest to me...

And those Mad Max films (not that Thunsderdome shit) were awesome when I was a kid now they're just crap...

And much to my dismay and sadness all those old "Hammer Horror" flicks...

Looking at these flicks through child's eyes without any knowledge of SFX the decades after was pure magic...

Say what??
Mad Max and Mad Max2 aka the Road Warrior are awesome to this day! Thunderdome was unwatchable mainstream 80's crap that was rated pg. I remember sitting in the theater just realizing it was shit.
As in horrible.

I agree with kidsgirl.Old movies if they are written well, acted, and excellent direction & cinematography are timeless. I think the reason some films like older sci-fi and fantasy don't age well is because today's technology (CGI) makes old special effects look primitive. I get bored with a movie if it has too much CGI. I tend to watch older films these days, film noir in particular is my current obsession.

My favorite genre with sci-fi. I need good sci-fi though which is hard.

I can't think of a lot off movies of hand....

Stars Wars hasn't age well at all... to my surprise. (IMHO)

James Bond Movies:

Batman movies- noted exception, Dark Night Trilogy

Network- Faye Dunway could never act and she was always one scene from busting out and acting as Mommie Dearest in damn near ever movie she starred in ... with the exception of Chinatown but she wasn't carrying that film either.

Guess Who's Coming To Dinner - it didn't hold up when it was released. lol

Cat On A Hot Tin Roof

Fatal Attraction

Jaws

A lot of the Si-Fi moives of the 50's / 60's... because the future is here. biggrin

Most 50s/60s - Si-Fi

Superman I, II, & III

Love Story

Rosemary Baby

Clint Eastwood movies

.. And Just For All - theis movie started Al Pacino down the road to over acting.

Love Story

I think Star Wars has held up. OF course the special effects are dated. There is no option.

Cat on A Hot Tin Roof holds up fine for me. Still enjoy it.

It's a reflection of the times.

I don't think the Dark Knight Trilogy ages well.

I recently rewatched it (had not seen it since the late 90s):

I HATED IT mad stupidfest

I never liked Ghostbusters even back in, what was it? 1983? I never understood why it was so well regarded.

"Poltergeist" however is a classic for me. I saw it 5 times in the theater in '82.

It still blows away idiotic stuff like "Insidious" which feels like some "Tales from the Darkside" from the late 80's.

But they are remaking "Poltergeist" so those that feel it is dated will get an update. lol

Poltergeist is timeless. Doesn't need a remake.

Ghostbusters . . . . not sure I'd sit through it all the way except to be polite.

Yup. So much that when I first saw it, I jumped out of my seat and stood in the theatre. (When they strapped them down to test their blood, when the blood jumped out the petri dish, I jumped to my feet. I was in the Army at the time, in an on post theatre full of fellow soldiers.)

Alien. They are in a future society, but the space craft has button computers with screens from 1980. I'm surprised the crew didn't play pong.

You would have had touch screens, like they have now...lol

The most dated thing in Alien is the sound effects of the bridge computers. It sounds a lot like a dot matrix printer should start up. Oh yeah, the 2001 style slitscan explosion at the end is bonkers.

I love Batman (1989) but the miniatures are quite obvious to me now, especially Joker's helicopter.

How can American Graffiti be aging poorly when it is already set in the past?

Also, it's okay if Pretty In Pink has aged; good Christ that movie is 27 years old.

I think CGI looks "aged" or at least in poor choice in most movies except Life Of Pi.

And to be fair, youre talking about some small specifics ...the whole horror aspect hasnt changed or been dated..just like Halloween. Theyre driving around in station wagons and gas is 44 cents a gallon but the movie is still as effective today as a whole

With the re-release of Jurassic Park, It dawned on me how well that movie has held up. For 1993, the CGI looks better than movies made today. Heck most of Spielberg's movies hold up well, Raiders, Close Encounters, ET, Poltergeist, Jaws,

I'm not sure about that, but the original JP still looks better than ANY other '90s CGI movie (Men in Black being the single exception)
