RIP Joe Weider, founder of bodybuilding empire Joe Weider, the one-time scrawny kid who grew up to form the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe bodybuilding competitons, has died. He was 93.

Weider developed a love for fitness during the Great Depression when as a child he was roughed up by neighborhood bullies. Sick of putting up with their abuse, and inspired by a magazine article he read, he developed a strength excercise routine using scraps from railroad yards. He eventually developed a muscular figure, and along with his brother formed the International Federation of Bodybuilders.
In addition to crating the Mr. Olympia and Mr. Universe competitions, he also published the premire fitness magazines Muscle and Fitness, Flex, Men's Fitness, and Shape, which was geared towards women.

Joe Weider was such a pioneer.
His "Muscle & Fitness" mag used to be one of my favorites.
Always loved hearing the stories about him and Arnold.
Rest in Peace. | |
