Unthinkable crimes - done by people YOU know ...

Yesterday I was in shock .

A classmate of mine was arrested apparently last week for child rape (among other things) . He had been a neighbor of mine growing up . I cant say we were "close" but we played together ... when we were like 7 - 15 .... and he did stop by my house on occasion - most recent was probably 10 yrs ago ... he had 4 kids ...

I wont go into details but ... the more I think about it the more I think "wow do you really ever know anyone !" ... even though I have an overwhelming belief that he may be innocent .

He was a church going guy , always active in the church and community . For one thing , I just cannot imagine that he would be 'alone' with a child that often ... not his own .. etc ... but i digress .

Made me reflect on another classmate - who got busted with child porn . He apparently was sending stuff over the internet . Again , another classmate I did not know too well - since high school but still another one that you would think "kinda upstanding dude" .... smart ... not a brain but ... still ... never had more than one girlfriend in high school ... always dated the same girl ... got married .... no kids but .... still .... child porn? this guy ? nah .... no way . lol .

Just curious if anyone else had similar shocking happenings ...

Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

I myself have no stories, but John Wayne Gacy was on my brother's newspaper route when he was a boy.

And this thread reminded me of this comic book memoir (which might look, by its cover and title, to be exploitative but is actually very good).

I went to school with these kids who (right out of high school) were arrested for stealing credit cards from customers at the restaurant they worked at. It was in the newspapers.

hmmm ...other than that I can't think of anything truly "unthinkable".

I went to school with a guy who broke into his ex-girlfriend's house one night. She wasn't home, but he shot her dad, I know for a fact, and maybe other's in the family. I can't remember. He fled, and was later arrested. The dad ended up dying a few years later, and it was attributed to his old gunshot wounds, so the guy had his sentence changed to murder. He's got 40 to 75 years. I know his mom real well, used to go to church with her. She and her husband are just as sweet as sweet can be. He was their baby. Real shocking.

I know another guy who used to be very good friends with my husband when I first met him. This guy got into an argument with some guy he barely knew on the street and shot him in cold blood. He got life.

I know two men who repeatedly molested their own step daughters. One served about seven years maybe, the other's case got dismissed because the girl wouldn't testify.

Sadly, I have an uncle who is a pedophile and is currently locked away where he belongs.

It's pretty tough on his closer relatives. Thankfully, I barely know the guy.

When I was 8, a friend and his mother were murdered by their stepdad/husband for insurance money

I guess I didn't know the dad that well but everyone who did loved him. He's in prison for life.

Yeah, I know a guy that did time for soliciting sex with a minor.

He got into porn, and one thing led to another. That's what generally happens with porn, BTW.

He got into a chat room and started chatting with what he thought was a 13-year-old girl. Turned out it was a cop.

"She" invited him to meet, and he suggested the local Jack-In-The-Box. He drove there, parked, and then thought "What in the HELL are you doing? This is insane!" So he put his truck in reverse and was going to leave.

Unfortunately, by entering the parking lot he had committed a crime. He pled not guilty, lost at trial, and served a couple years in several jails.

Basically, he got imprisoned for thinking about doing something but ultimately deciding not to do it.

My dad's cousin murdered their grandfather in 1977.

He was addicted to drugs and when my great-grandfather found out he said he'd no longer give him money, but he would pay for rehab.

Mikey and a friend were fried and lay in wait at my great-grandfather's house. Shot him multiple times with my great-grandfather's own rifle, stole all the money they could find and my great-grandfather's car.

They were caught, found guilty and sent to prison. Mikey got out about 20 years ago.

I'll never forget when my father got the call. One of the very few times I've ever seen my father completely lost.

When I was in high school, a guy I was dating and his friend did an armed robbery. I only found out when my friend, who was dating the other guy, happened to mention it about the time they were suppose to be doing it. I was wondering why she insist we hang out at another person's house halfway across town. They robbed the corner store around the corner from the other guys house. confused They were caught within an hour. After his stint in Juvie his pop sent him back east to finish school. He living great now.

I got together with a few of my high school classmates this weekend (to plan our upcoming reunion) and heard some unbelievable stories about one guy, in particular.

Another classmate of ours looked this guy up while he was in town on business. They went out for a few and Mr. Unbelievable said, "Hey, why don't you come back and stay at my place? I have plenty of room." So they go back to "his" place and are having a fine time smoking cigars and having a few more cocktails. Eventually, they go to sleep and - a couple hours later - there's a guy in the house saying, "What the *#($*#&$( are you doing in my house?!"

Turned out, Mr. Unbelievable had just gotten a job working security in this gated community and, unbeknownst to my other classmate, this was not his house, at all.

According to the folks I was talking to, this guy has been in and out of jail a lot. They were all talking about maybe trying to get in touch with him about the reunion - but nobody wants him to stay at their house. lol

A boy I knew in high school (and had a crush on for a limited time) turned out to be a serial rapist.

Someone I used to know personally liked underage girls and surprisingly was never arrested.

A guy that my family used to know tried "grooming" me as a child but never was alone with me to actually try anything (thank GOD).

And I remember two prominent members of the community I grew up in were known child molesters, but were never reported to police.

neutral

I had suspicions about some but not all. Some were just very good at blending with the surroundings to never arouse suspicion. That's what I find the most frightening. eek

* A childhood friend of mine served time some years back for the statutory rape of a mentally retarded 16-year-old girl.

* A much older cousin of mine, in a drug-induced stupor, killed his girlfriend and then drove around with her body in the passenger seat of his truck, apparently in an attempt to feign her still being alive. disbelief Suffice it to say, those plans didn't work out for him very long.

If people I know are doing unthinkable crimes I know nothing about it. I can't think of anyone in my family or friends that has been in any real trouble.

I had a friend get a DUI charge once (just sitting in a parking lot - not even driving) and for some reason she decided to use her one call to call me at 4am. I didn't pick up and the message she left was simply, "Hi Erin, trouble in paradise". I had no clue what the hell she was talking about...but then again, she was drunk.
