How many of you don't have "normal" lives?

Anybody here on the Org consider themselves to be eccentric? Live a different life altogether than what's typical? If you're weird, tell us why smile

if by normal you mean average then I would say all of us that have access to the org and enough time/access to post live a privileged life.

I pay little attention to convention. I do what makes me happy (as long as it doesn't hurt anybody).

I did get out today, I drove to the end of the road by myself and parked the car at the edge of a little cliff that overlooks the city just to get a glimpse of the Qantas jet doing the fly-over at the Grand Prix. I'm happy to report it wasn't the A380 and I didn't miss out whew

I've always asked myself what's normal and why the hell does everyone aspire to be so normal?

I guess that makes me an eccentric. If yes, so be it. shrug

Normal is defined by what the vast majority of society does or does not do assuming they have the means, and it varies from region to region.

For instance I know a relatively wealthy guy who has no television, no computer, no handheld electronic devices of any kind, and only a landline phone. To me that's not normal.

But I also agree that people shouldn't aspire to be normal, and I certainly don't as I've been often accused of "marching to the beat of a different drum". People should make their own independent determinations as to what's the best or right thing to do, they shouldn't let others make those determinations for them. Quite often the mass majority engages in behavior which is both nonsensical and morally wrong, in those situations it's far better to NOT be "normal".

I'm definitely something of an urban hermit. If I didn't work in an office, I'd probably almost never talk to anyone. Sometimes I do feel a bit lonely, and I do wonder how I'll adapt when I retire and don't have that work interaction, but I do have plans that I think will keep me occupied and at least somewhat engaged with other people.

And I'm a great believer in leading a very simple life. I've never owned much - I live in a small bachelor apartment well below my means, I only have a table and one chair, never owned a car (I walk everywhere) or a television, and in the last few years I've pretty much rid myself of the few possessions I'd built up (which mainly meant getting rid of my music collection). I've always wanted a simple, uncluttered life and I think I'm just now at that point where I've achieved the kind of clean, basic existence I've always worked towards. I've been somewhat influenced recently in some of these decisions by Peter Singer's writings on vegetarianism, world poverty and what it means to lead an ethical life and also by the global warming issue, but mainly I think it's just a reflection of my personality.

I don't like to think I'm weird, but almost everyone I meet has told me that I am at some point, and I don't think everyone would lie so I guess it's almost certainly true. shrug If that's the way I am, then that's the way I am. I'm pretty content with my life and it hasn't really held me back in my career so far, so it's really not a problem.

Eh. I think it depends on your definition of normal.

My life is quite normal. I certainly share traits with a lot of folks, but I have plenty of traits that are different too.

I don't know. When I was younger I probably thought of myself as somewhat outside of the mainstream but the older I get the more I see my commonalities with others, much more than our differences.

I can think of lots of stuff about me that is outside the US norm (being vegetarian, atheist, not owning a car, I don't and probably won't have kids, I've traveled a fair bit out of the country, etc.) but then I get up every morning and go to work, I care for my friends and family, I want the best for my country and my neighbors and so on, and I guess the stuff that we all do seems much more than the stuff that only I and a few others do.

Of course you are right, because that's how the vast majority of society would define "normal" lol

But that's also how mass illusion evolves (something that absolutely terrifies me!), and the thing is that, in our society, "normal" usually has quite a positive connotation, whereas I find most "normal" things people do absolutely illogical or even sickening... shrug

Our view of normal is mostly dependent upon who is around us I suppose. So, if it's normal in one place that means it's probably weird in another place...

I wouldn't say privileged. My life is far from that but for valid reasons.

If it weren't for those reasons, then yeah, my life would still not be normal.

I am a gay, Black man who does not outwardly manifest as same gender loving.

I am also built so that people assume I've played football.

Complicates life.

Co-sign.

Some people crave to be just that. I can't begin to understand how one thinks like that.

Normal for me is not intended to be normal for you.

I would certainly be comfortable living as you do, except with a television. I still seem to succumb to certain social expectations.

I can appreciate that lifestyle and I see similarities with mine, but unfortunately these days most jobseekers have a harder time finding work if they live like that. Many jobs are filled through networking, those who stay to themselves and don't interact very much will face an uphill battle. And there are actually employers who won't hire someone unless the applicant has a Facebook account or LinkedIn account they can check out. I think it sucks as privacy is very important to me therefore I use neither Linked nor FB, but that's the way the world operates these days.
