eBook Reader Rumor(s) , The Nook

NOTE: This is about e-ink readers specifically, not about standard backlit tablets that

bare the Name Nook or Kindle.

OK, I guess we'll make this about all eBook readers in general.

However, 2013 is rumored to be a big year for updates to eBook readers, much like

The Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch (with glowlight) had a dissapointing sales

season this winter, probably due to the success of it's rival the Kindle.

The issue is that the Kindle PaperWhite has twice ther resolution. The shame here

is that the Nook screen is capable of this resolution--it's the chip inside the machine

that limits it.

B&N could have easily updated this with a new chip and hardware to match the

screen's capabilities. The Kindle PaperWhite simple looks sharper. Now, this is

not to say that the Nook is not a joy to read--indeed, it's resolution is actually beyond

that of most of the paperbacks you would read, so it's provides less strain on the

eyes.

It also supports open standard ePubs.

My wish list for the Nook this year is:

1. Double the resolution.

2. Make the whites whiter and the blacks blacker

3. Improve the software, especially for wi-fi usage

Rumored improves (though EVERYTHING is an uncomfirmed rumor) for this spring are:

1. Double resolution

2. Sharper blacks and whites

3. Possible colour e-ink screen

What is your wish list for these devices this year?

Color e ink would be huge. I think e readers are losing to tablets because they are so clunky in comparison. But that is too bad because they are readable and tablets are not

I chose the Nook specifically because of the open Epub support. I would like it to be full android though.

It's very easy to root.

The problem with rooting is that future firmware updates don't work, and the market place (the B&N market place is wonky--I ended up having to buy my books from BN the via their website, then sideloading the books into my nook usinbe Calibbre)...That shit got old, so I restored it back to an un-rooted state.

Rooting was fun though. you get full blown android on the Nook. Not ALL of the softwre works, but enough to make it my stand-in tablet. lol

I really hope BN get their retail going on this. I love the Nook--and I love e-Ink ereaders.

Mirrorsol was supposed to be the next-big thing.

And, the technology has gotten better. It can actually play video.

The problem is the canabilization of eReaders by Tablet computers.

I think this is a shame since tablet are backlit and contribute to eyestrain.

I want something larger and thinner that could be rolled up like a real magazine.

For all the interior and fashion design magazines I like to purchase.
