I wish I could do more handy things. I'd love to be able to build stuff, like furniture. The idea of building my own computer really excites me, but I'm too lazy.
I did convert an old entertainment center into a very cool bar. I painted the exterior black and the interior a really rich red, then turned the entertainment center on its side and put in a rack for wine glasses. I love how it turned out.

Ex-Moderator | I wash my own laundry.
I have painted my house, but I've also hired people to do it.
In general, I'd rather pay someone to do most things, my hair, repair things, painting, etc. They'll probably do a better job than I would. But when I haven't been able to afford it I did it all. |

I painted a table and chair set and recovered the chair cushions once. It felt pretty good. |

I had a big computer desk that was too big for my apartment (and also useless, since I don't have a big desktop computer anymore). So a couple weeks ago, I sawed it up and turned part of it into a little bookcase. I am very happy in my trash-to-treasure moments.

change the breaks and chabge the oil and do tune ups on my car.. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

First off...Let me just say that it is SUCH an attractive quality in a man when he is handy! I love a man that will tinker around to figure out how to do something.
Second...is doing your own laundry really considered DIY? I just call that doing chores.
Finally some of the DIY projects that I've done: Interior painting Landscaping - preparing and maintaining several flower/veggie beds Replace blinds Flush my hot water heater Put together furniture - bookshelves, bed Caulking (around tubs/sinks/etc)
I used to do more when I owned a house, but now that I'm a renter I let others handle things.

I try to fix up everything that I can fix myself without resorting to anyone else's help (radiators, electronics, plumbing etc.). I know that I'm not really allowed to do that as I live in a rented apartment, but I don't care.
My instruments and other musical equipment requite quite a lot of maintenance (especially my Rhodes piano).
I've put together my own computer and pretty much built my own OS around the Linux kernel.
I sew my clothes if needed, but the end results aren't necessarily that nice.
"Simple" furniture like desks.
I cut my hair when I feel like it (not that often, tbh).
... uhm, food?

I do my own nails Trim my own hair (because I'm too paranoid with hair dressers. They always cut off more than I ask. ) Style my own hair (naturally curly hair is a lot of work) Do my own facials and skin care Do my own make up Do my own repairs around the house (have my own toolkit) Assemble furniture Sometimes make/modify my own clothing Make my own vitamin water (sans artificial colours) Do my own yardwork

I can make my own clothes, and I made all the curtains in my house. (Getting ready to make some more, in fact.) Over the holidays, I painted my bedroom using a "sponge off" technique. Before that, I did some drywall repair where I had a big settling crack in one wall. I put a dimmer switch in my bathroom - and snaked a drain over the weekend. I'm an excellent cook and make most of my own food. I can rip vinyl records into digital files. I'm sure there's a bunch more stuff, but that's all I can think of at the moment. True story - tried to change a lightbulb the other night . It was one of those recessed thingys ...
it was alil tough getting it out .... and nearly impossible putting the new one in ... when i did that .. of course it didnt work .
NOw i have to explain - interior lighting is what my wife has a degree in ... she asked me to do this .. so when she came home .... i was embarrassed to still be wrestling with this lightbulb .
She gets up on the ladder and ... sure enough ... she cant do it either ... took her 3 days to fix a little 5 min job it should have been for me ...
Another lightbulb story - she gives me 2 lightbulbs to change out in the other bathrooms . Normal lightbulbs . I go up ... take the first one out ... but the new one in .... it flashes on ... and ... poof . off .
hmm. do the same again with the other bulb . Same thing . ON then off . And wont go on .
So ... after thinking about it ... she must have bought the cheap bulbs on clearance - - - and sure enough when i go get new bulbs they work fine .
Sigh . That is my DIY lately . Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

i do housework and minor repairs such as painting, fixtures etc. myself, and the association takes care of the lawn and exterior of the building. i pay others to service my car.
these days i'm sort of big into paying other people to do the more complicated projects for me because i have screwed up a few DIY projects it sucks when you invest time, effort and money into doing something, only to find it has to be done again. (i once tried to 'fix' the carpeting, ended up finally just replacing it all)
so at this point in my life now i've wised up enough to know there are limits to my skill sets, and i hire folks to do a lot of the technically challenging heavy lifting. it's easier and things turn out the way i want them to
as far as crafts go, i'm mad into that stuff, i love retooling items for use as things they were not intended for. i love buying things and assembling them, like furniture and such. i put up all the shelves in my garage and etc.

For me it's partly that someone will probably do a better job, partly that I don't want to do it and partly that I can afford it so I choose to give someone the work.
For example, I could have moved myself but but would have taken all day, I'd have ended up with a bad back or knees and I wouldn't have contributed to the economy. Times are tough these days, if I can help anyone out by giving them work, it feels good to do so.
Back when I couldn't afford it I did everything myself. Now that I'm older and doing better I don't need to. |

Ahem...
I can replace the rotors/brake pads on my car. I can paint & spackle. I can change the faucets on a sink. I can install a door. I can do minor electrical stuff (light switches, ceiling fans, light fixtures, alarm contacts) By St. Boogar and all the saints at the backside door of Purgatory!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Absolutely nothing to do with electrical wiring.
I can do quite a few things around the house, but it still takes me nine times longer than just hiring someone who already knows all the details. I never have the exact tool, I end up running to home depot 5x to complete the project. I now have a ton of plumbing tools I've only used once and have no idea how to utilize them for other things to get my money's worth. I pretty blown out about the whole DIY concept, outside of decorating purposes.

Hey there, handsome! You can come over and spackle and fiddle with my electrical stuff any time!

I do all kinds of thing myself...

i work on my music gear
i've done home renovations... built rooms... decks... painting... carpeting
i'm about to lay a hardwood floor in part of my studio
most stuff i'll take a bit of time and just figure it out... for example, our (bloody expensive) pram for our baby recently broke... wheels were jammed... i pulled it apart and fixed it
today i'm sorting out some lighting and fastening a set of drawers to the wall

I have changed my own brakes and my oil - until the car almost fell on me! Now I pay someone to do it! I helped build our deck and almost built our fence by myself - I was pretty proud of that.

I make my own...
Lotion body butter hair conditioner body spray body soap and shower gel candles household cleaning products rose water
I can
strip, sand, and refinish furniture paint indoor and outdoor assemble furniture install tiles apply acrylic & gel nails braid, cornrow, weave, & wig making
I'm learning to change oil and basic car stuff. I intend to learn more about cars, I'm tired of being at the mercy of mechanics or asking my dude to go with me LOL!

* Cut my own hair * Alter my own pants (Can't mess with a shirt or jacket just yet, though) * Simple carpentry (I built our oven hood, bathroom vanity, a built-in book shelf, etc.) * Pretty comfy with most home repairs and upgrades -- interior or exterior -- except sophisticated electrical or plumbing work
I wish I could fix cars and better manage household finances, though. [Edited 3/22/13 18:19pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
