Blizzard of '13

Anybody else in the U.S. Northeast bracing for tomorrow? Where I am they're all saying 18-24 inches with blizzard conditions. From what I remember as a very young kid, it sounds like it will be similar to the Blizzard of '78.

I can't stress enough how much I hate these winter storms. Just knowing I won't be able to leave my house for at least 24 hours drives me crazy, I feel like a prisoner. And if power goes out?

Hopefully by Saturday I don't look like this:

bananadance and people wonder why I moved to New Orleans where they have hurricaines.

I absolutely hate ice.

Whenever there is a foot or more of snow there will surely be lots and lots and lots of ice.

Each warm day a good 4 inches of snow melts during lunchtime and then turns into a sheet of ice at 4pm, just before everyone leaves to go home from work, at 5pm, IN THE DARK.pissed

I miss my family but I don't miss this crazy weather!

I love blizzards. It's nature's way of saying "take a break!".

As long as you're prepared (hot cocoa, plenty of yummy food to make) I think they're lovely.

I also like the way they make people come together. It reminds us that we're all in this together. We need to help each other. I've had my car pushed out of being stuck by strangers more than once and I've stopped to help strangers myself.

My friends and I always used to walk to the nearest bar and hang out for a few on the first big snow day of the year. I kinda miss that.

THAT is the only thing that seems to bring New Englanders together, IMO.

During the blizzard of 78 people HAD to ask their neighbors questions and sometimes for help. Yikes, in New England your never suppose to need help from ANYBODY. Never suppose to BOTHER anybody.

Drinking hot cocoa down South just isn't as good neutral no matter how cold it gets.

Also good, coffee drinks at a bar within walking distance when no one is allowed to drive anywhere.

F@#%! F^$&! F@#%!

(Just thought I'd get some expletives out now. censored And I don't even live in New York or New England.)

Actually, you guys in the northeast are going to get the storm we're having now in the Midwest. Where I am, it's snowing right now for the eighth straight day. mad We haven't had any huge snowstorms this week (the biggest snow was about 3 to 4 inches), but we've been consistently getting about a least an inch every day this week. Last night it began to rain, and it turned a lot of streets into sheets of ice. omg Earlier today it warmed up enough that it turned to straight rain, but now it's all snowy and will probably freeze over.

But we're practically going to be like Miami compared to what you guys are going to get. I hope you all are well stocked with food, medicine, rock salt, warm clothes, whatever, because it's going to be a doozy.

I am NOT happy, I want it to go out to sea but here in CT we are gonna get it, and get it good BUT I'm ready and more than prepared. So with the kiddies off from school already we are just gonna grind it out and hope no one loses power during the storm. All I can wish for at this point. Stay safe everybody

They're saying now that Long Island can get up to 24".

I bought a bag of salt and 3 extra snowshovels (1 for each kid mr.green ) yesterday.

It's a wintery-mix outside my office right now...some snow, some rain...but the asshole drivers are out in full force.

Why is it that people decide it's a good idea to make illegal u-turns or turn without signaling en-masse during shitty weather???

fishslap

ALSO - anyone notice that they're naming winter storms now?

I mean, it's cool, but as for this perticular Nor'easter...who can take "Winter Storm Nemo" seriously???

Right off the cuff;

- I hope we get the tail end of the storm.

- This forecast looks fishy to me.

- Just keep shoveling...just keep shoveling...

Glad you brought up this subject as I have been wondering why the hell the Weather Channel has been calling it "Nemo" while my local television station has been calling it "Charlotte". Here's the answer:

http://www.nhregister.com/articles/2013/02/08/news/doc51151c9b21130392562596.txt

While naming hurricanes as soon as they become tropical storms, the National Weather Service does not name winter storms. However, local and national TV stations have decided it is much easier for people to follow weather updates and communicate about the weather if the storm has a name. So they started naming winter storms this year.

“During the upcoming 2012-13 winter season The Weather Channel will name noteworthy winter storms,” the channel says in a statement on its website. “Our goal is to better communicate the threat and the timing of the significant impacts that accompany these events. The fact is, a storm with a name is easier to follow, which will mean fewer surprises and more preparation.”

At WFSB, however, staff says they have been doing it for years, and The Weather Channel just followed suit this year.

“We’ve had this tradition here since the early 1970s of naming winter storms” says WFSB’s Melissa Cole in a short video on the WFSB website explaining the name Charlotte. “We’ve been doing it for years and years and years. It’s just one of those things that make us special.”

Nemo, however, took off faster than Charlotte – likely because it was issued by a national news outlet instead of just in Connecticut. It was trending on Twitter early Friday morning, and The Weather Channel encouraged people to keep using the name to communicate.

"Never let nasty stalkers disrespect you. They start shit, you finish it. Go down to their level, that's the only way they'll understand. You have to handle things yourself."
