I had habit breaking my fill-ins by biting ice cubes and a weird fetish for chewing hangers,which left a small chip in my left tooth.My dentist made me get metal fill-ins.No problems since.

Depending on who giveth and who taketh away, so to speak. I mean, you could need a good dentist if you were too enthusiastic.

UPDATE:
Well what a hell of a day
They had to re-take a pic of the side of my mouth as the film from the other pic was not so great.
My back molar was badly infected. I had up to 5 needles of freezing.
It was so bad I could feel the freaking drill. At some point, the dentist had to stop and put another needle, this time into the tooth and giving a few minutes for freezing. I could still feel the pain, omfg I thought I was in hell or going to die. omg I was sobbing in that chair while the dentist was working on me. They stopped a few times to let me calm down. It hurt so bad.
The dentist put anti-biotic in the tooth and gave me a temporary filling. He could not go ahead with the root canal as it was not advisable to go with that. He wanted time for the antibiotic to work and the angry area to settle down. I was given some pain killers and a prescription for penicillan.
I went home to bed.
So next Friday is scheduled for the root canal. I am not looking forward to this, actually dreading it.

Hopefully it will go better next time. I'm thinking that it will. When infection is involved, it can be very difficult and in some cases impossible for the numbing medication to work. With the antibiotics at work on the infection, there's a much better chance that the numbing medication work better next time. I hope you feel better soon. *  *I'm firmly planted in denial | |

Oh shit.
I feel for ya. I had an infection in one of mine too. Similar story but mine was a front tooth. They opened it up, made a mess, found it was infected and sent me off with auntie robotics.
Wasn't long before my face started swelling up. After a couple of days I looked deformed and it was sore as. When I went back to have it sorted there was still some infection so they gave it another week or so. All got sorted in the end but like I said, I feel for ya.
Keep topped up on the painkillers. Hope it all goes well.

I'll make your life easy this week and not post anything that needs monitoring.
So, you'll be struggling with this for about 2 weeks, I guess?!
Hang in there and count the days. When spring starts, it's all over and you will have a very beautiful, healthy and pain free smile. I guess that's the straw you have to hold on for, for these painfull 2 weeks.

I can totally empathise with you
Though I don't actually mind going to the dentist...
...I have had an abscess on one of my teeth for around 3 weeks now and was in absurd pain in the beginning...
...He since put me on 10 day course of antibiotics, but when I was due to see him to investigate it the bugger rang in sick! :... The bloody cheek of him
...Now I have to wait another week to have it looked at... at least now I'm not in pain
.....At least for the time being

UPDATED STATUS:
Yes it did. It hurt a bit but not as much as last week. It was a much better experience. Next will be a temp filling, and a crown down the road.
I survived
My jaw is sore. My face is a bit swollen.
Been living on extra strength advil and getting lots of sleep off and on.

Yesterday I went out to Chilli's to eat out and while eating some food my temporary filling came out
Today I went to my 12:30 pm appointment and had my permanent filling done, which was to be done anyways...... next is getting a crown........... ugh! But that will be a while away yet.
