Anybody ever gotten sick from an airplane flight?

My boss is in the hospital with some flu bug-they think she got it from someone on the flight she was on.

Yep, had to learn the hard-way

I take Clorox wipes when I travel and a face masks. I caught a bug one time on a long flight; the chick across the aisle from me got sick. She came on looking just fine and got sicker as the flight continued. I knew I was going to catch it, sick as a dog 24 hrs after I returned home. Hell if I thought I could bring some Lysol on flights I would. lol

There have been a couple of times I've flown and then suffered through a cold a few days later. Entirely unscientific, but I always sort of took for granted I caught those bugs on the plane.

Flying back from Vegas and the lady in back of me coughed the entire flight mad

A few days later I started coughing itty bitty green specks which looked like broccoli, went to emergency and I told them about the flight and they tossed my ass in an isolation room. I was diagnosed with acute bronchitis and had to miss 3 days of work. Now I always travel with surgical masks!

For sure. Lots of people, enclosed space, and stress.

I heard somewhere that because of the dehydration that happens on planes, you might try rubbing oil inside your nose to protect yourself from picking up germs. I have no idea if that makes any scientific sense or not.

I saw a doco once where a microbiologist scientist guy took air samples from several places inside planes and found the air was exceptionally clean - not much in the way of microbes or fungi, except as you would expect, within close proximity of sick passengers - there were bacteria and viruses present as there would be anywhere. Only thing is on long flights you're close for extended periods and, as Andy pointed out, the air is unnaturally dry and that's makes your nasal membranes vulnerable and more susceptible to infection. geek

In 2009 me and he master were on QF093 the plane that brought swine flu to Australia - it brought 2 or more cases from LA mad we had to fill in forms about that and the master had to take time off work because we were 2 seats away from one of the cases eek but thankfully we never caught it

i hate flying for that reason. it makes me feel sick for a while, and even if i don't catch an actual bug, it stresses my body out. now i prepare for flights by using a facemask, scented oils and sanitizer. along with vitamin C, and a policy of try not to touch anything on the plane, these seem to help.

The green specks was the infected area of the bronchi that I was coughing up. I wasnt in ICU, they put my in an isolation room in the ER until they confirmed my test results so that if it was an highly contagious airborne disease I would not infect everyone. I was at Henry Ford Hospital, one of the biggest ER department in Detroit. And they do not play! lol
