The Dictator (2012) - The heroic story of a dictator who risks his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed.

Extremely silly star star 1/2

I watched five this weekend:

Moonrise Kingdom - 5 stars

End of Watch - 3.5 stars

Premium Rush - 4 stars

Lincoln - fell asleep on it - 3 stars

Silver Linings Playbook - Jennifer Lawrence got on my last fucking nerves and I have no idea how she won the Oscar but I loved Bradley Cooper - 3 stars

Snow White & The Huntsman (2012)

I would have been upset if I'd paid money to see it, but entertaining enough. Entirely too long and the 3d Act was horrible. More dwarf was needed like BOC needed more cowbell.

starstar .5

The Guard (2011)

Smart, Tarantinoesque comedy. Brendan Gleeson was great. Nicely cast.

Yeah a lot of people loved it, it goes that way with me sometimes with a lot of movies. Of course with this one I kind of understand the appeal, it just wasn't for me.

Les bien-aimés / Beloved (2011) - In London, a mother and daughter navigate their respective romances; Madeline rekindles an affair from thirty years earlier, while her daughter Vera is caught between a musician who cannot commit and her ex, who still pines for her.

The musical numbers were alright, but I found the characters very frustrating. star star 1/2

I liked that movie better than Beasts Of Southern Wild....

I give them both star star star star .5 stars out of 5 .... but BoSW brought out the "wanna call CPS because babygirl is in squalor" out of me.

lol

Wreck it Ralph... star star star.5 love Pixar type movies.... my kids loved this more than the others we watched.

Finally saw Avengers... 3 out of 5 stars... liked the action but totally predictable.

I did not see the bluray edition unfortunately. Anyway, its kinda sad how people under 40 view John Wayne films as all old fashioned, useless "cowboys vs indians" type of affairs. That and the sting about his supposed racism (which could be true, who knows?) and him being part of pop culture thanks to Public Enemy's song "fight the power"..

... unless its got Sergio Leone on the cover, younger film buffs just seem to ignore pretty much all westerns. I love Leone's films, but his take on the genre is very different to the hollywood Western. And even they changed over the years aswell....

..Alot of Wayne's films are frankly mediocre-crap, but he did make a handful of great westerns, with "Rio Bravo" being one of them. Its a "mans" film as its more about male bonding then shooting bad guys. Infact, it was the supposed answer film to another famous western "High Noon", a movie very ahead of its time but supposedly hated by Rio's director Howard Hawks and by John Wayne himself...

...the moral of the film is that certain people will help you when really needed, which was the opposite message of "high noon". Both are great films, with a great performance by Dean Martin. 50's heart throb Ricky Nelson dates the film and his performance is lacking, but for the most part, this is a more subtle, almost downbeat western and is well worth a watch if you get past the stigma that John Wayne still has on modern audiences.

Its not complex by any means, its still just a fun movie (albeit more slow paced then most westerns), but theres a reason why it gets great reviews, and Wayne is great too of course.

Take This Waltz--A happily married woman (Michelle Williams) finds herself uncontrollably attracted to another man.

Pretty decent run of the mill indie 4/5

Paper Man--Jeff Daniels plays a somewhat disturbed writer who has an imaginary friend. He has a troubled marrige to his wife (Lisa Kudro), and finds an unexpected friend in Emma Stone.

Pretty decent run of the mill indie 4/5

Safety Not Guaranteed--an intern (Aubrey Plaza) takes a story at the newspaper to investigate a man who claims to be able to travel through time.

Pretty decent run of the mill indie 4/5

No (2012) - An ad executive comes up with a campaign to defeat Augusto Pinochet in Chile's 1988 referendum.

I like that it was intentionally filmed to look like a cheap 80s movie. Fascinating story. star star star star

I give this one 1/2 out of 5 Kanye stumps.

This is a tour de force of American creativity and artistry. It had me at the seat of my pants the entire time. It's the Kurt Cobain of its generation. A coming of age story, a love story, and a horror all rolled into one. Tragic, beautiful, paralizing. I loved every minute of this American horror classic.
