I saw a father trying to toughen up his kid so she would be OK after he was gone - the intention was pure and only came from a place of love nod

I did say something about questionable parenting lol (like 6 year olds living by themselves and cooking for themselves and spending quality time with a bunch of drunks)

lol I was just pfft-ing all those 4s vs. my 5. Hey, stamp my head "sucker" and send me on my way, I fall for those type of unadulterated love stuff, what she had and what he (and their little community) gave her was priceless from my point of view even given the situation.

Solaris 2.5/5 The movie was a little too slow and didn't mess with my mind enough. The overall concept was interesting. I really must read the book.

Beasts of the Southern Wild is not a five star movie.

It's resonance with us as people is what makes it a winner however.

It doesn't make you a 'sucker' to love it so much, just not objective.

Uncle Boonme Who Can Recall His Past Lives

Overall, I give it out of 5 Kanye stumps.

The story is about a man who is dying of a terminal illness who goes back to his rural Village in Northern Thailand.

He is visited by his long dead wife's ghost as well as a family member who had escaped into the jungle years

ago and turned into a "monkey ghost."

During this period he is also able to recall several of his past lives, revealed in this movie in 10 or 15 minute

mini-movies within the greater story. The stories are really odd, somewhat sad or melancholy, and often

very hard to understand without a clear understanding of Thai animist beliefs and folklore.

I found the movie at times very moving, and at other times very .... mundane. It's as if a camera followed

a man around in a documentary style format. It's low budget adding to it's strange affect on me, as well

as a certain level of charm.

I applaud this movie for going far beyond the usual Thai movie which is either a dreadful romantic comedy

revealing the usual Asian racisim/colourism and distortion or hyper-campy-interpretation of western

genres and attitudes, and for it avoiding a paint-by-numbers copycat of far superior japanese genres (horror,

mystery, etc.).

I'm hoping it's part of a wave of Thai movies that breaks from tradition, by exploring tradition.

If you're interesting, click the image above.

I saw this movie in a film class and was impressed by the director. My favorite of Weerasethakul's, out of the several we watched, was Tropical Malady. A sensual feast!

wink Alright Mr. Argumentive. Maybe the camera shots could have been done better or the lighting, I don't know, I've been disappointed (as I'm sure many here have been) to many times by those of a professional opinion to make a big deal out of it one way or the other. I'm in it for the story. These days few stories make me walk away giving much thought to them, some are pretty generic sprinkled with titillation, but this one made me think, a lot.

This is not the theme of the thread but....

There is this movie "Beware of Mr Baker" about the drummer Ginger Baker from the band Cream.

I think I have missed the opportunity to see it here in town but it intrigues me.

Has anyone seen this pic? What did you think of it?

The Words 2/5 It was okay, watching a man go through his guilt trip over a bad choice in his life. I think it's difficult to fake a great work of art (or words) that is never seen. There was nothing all that spectacular about that old man's life that would make a book spectacular, it was sad, but not spectacular or even that interesting, obviously it's his ability with words, but then he never says anything profound. In the end you have 2 men who regret losing the women they loved over the same damned book.

Overlong and repetitive, but it looked great in IMAX 3D. star star star 1/2

I saw it in 3D as well, I liked seeing a 3rd of the 5 wizards, the intensity is different from the 1st of the Lord of the Rings film so I made sure I judged it on it's own merit, it's not an end of the world/middle earth film so the danger is different

Amour (2012)

Performances and direction were affecting, precise, and haunting. Wonderfully directed and well-cast. About 20 minutes too long for such a heavy topic and came *thisclose* to overwrought at times. But the movie is true to its title, and perhaps that's the most unsettling part of it all.

It was interesting to look behind the scenes, I've vaguely been following the "plight" of these guys for years. It's a shame they felt so invincible - they didn't believe that when the people with the money don't like you, you will get squashed - even if you go and live in another country. It doesn't matter about extradition agreements, you simply bribe a government to charge your perp with some trivial charges and have them deported - easy.

Thanks Cerebus for the link to this.
