Born in 1945 in Valencia, Spain, Royo began demonstrating his artistic talent early. At the age of 9 his father, a prominent physician and avid art enthusiast, employed private tutors to instruct Royo in drawing, painting, and sculpture. When Royo turned 14 he entered the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. Upon turning 18 Royo continued his artistic studies privately with Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, Chairman of Art Studies of the San Carlos Academy. He also visited the major museums in Europe at this time to study the famous masters--Velasquez, Goya, Renoir, Monet, and Sorolla among others.

Not my favorite, but my second favorite
From his 3rd Millenium collection.

I wonder why I can't get into art...

When I see some of it I am awed, and I see others and it is like please! Must not be my forte'

see mama, me and u gotta meet up one of these days, so i could take u 2 an art gallery or sumfin. u ain't gotta be super-hardcore into the art ("ooh, the strokes in this painting portray the artist's blahblahblah", etc.). it's just awesome 2 look at.

Exactly! You don't have to analyze it to death to appreciate it. Well said.

I’m a total fuddy duddy. I prefer the Italian Renaissance and Baroque masters: Caravaggio, Botticelli, Da Vinci, Raphael and Michelangelo. I could never decide a favorite, but I love these:

“The Inspiration of St. Matthew” by Caravaggio

“The Birth of Venus” by Botticelli

This rough study of human proportions, “The Vitruvian Man,” by Da Vinci

Also, there was a sketch discovered a few years back by (I believe) Michelangelo, thought to be a self-portrait of him in a deranged, almost possessed-looking, state. It’s really striking, kinda spooky and immediately became a favorite of mine because of its enigma. It was found on the backside of one of his recognized self portraits, but I can’t seem to find any information on it online. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Totally unrelated, another of my favorites is Dutch Gothic painter Hieronymus Bosch. Here’s his “Garden of Earthly Delights.”
Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ
πρὸς ὀλίγον ἐστὶ τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.”
