nibbled and picked on random things at my church buffet. didn't eat a meal actually, vs. a spoon of this, a spoonful of that, a bite and a nibble of such & such. basically me being too lazy to stand in line, eating of the other half's plate smile

Schmorbraten von Pute w (turkey roast in gravy ) with veggies and brown rice. It's leftover from dinner yesterday. I like to brown brined poultry quarters (dark meat! drooling ) in a frypan, then roast slowly topped with a little pesto. Schmorbraten is typically a beef roast. Because I serve my Schmorbraten the traditional way (completely sliced and floating on a bed of gravy), it didn't look like poultry at all, and The Hub was totally astonished when I explained that he was eating turkey. It tasted even better today foodnow

question Yum. Cerebus must know more.

You've never had broccoli raisin salad? It's pretty common around these parts.

Broccoli florets, raisins (I prefer golden or sultani but regular are OK), red onions and the dressing is a sweetish-mayo based but a bit lighter kind of affair. It's traditionally made w/bacon but I, of course, only consume it without unless it's the veggie kind.

You can google recipes and a a bunch pop up. Pick one. It's pretty good.

And fresh cut fruit on the side.

That salad is very midwestern. I've seen it made with sunflower seeds, too. And cheese. There's also another version made with shredded carrots and raisins. I think the main tie-in is the dressing.

I had a salad with smoked turkey for lunch today - homemade. I'm leaving for vacation on Thursday and don't want to take a chance on some food prep person giving me norovirus by not washing their hands (which happened to me the night before I left on vacation last year).

I am coming down with a cold, though. mad

My mom used to make that. She called it "carrot salad." I love it.

I searched for a recipe right after I posted that comment. lol Strangely, I don't recall ever having it. I may have heard of it, but I forget a lot of food stuff. Which is fine, really, because then I get to rediscover it. lol Broccoli and red onions are staples for me, love 'em! Raisins I usually use more in baking, but I'm all over trying them in this salad. Think I'll go with golden. Thanks. cool

nod Carrots and raisins I'm very familiar with. Used to eat that one a lot in the early vegetarian days, but got really tired of it. Sunflower seeds and cheese drool are two MORE things I love. I'm just gettin' all kinds of salad inspiration. biggrin

Mock duck is made from pressed wheat gluten. It's also called "seitan". It's a plant-based protein that many of us veggie-types like. It has a meaty texture and an earthy taste to it.

Where can one buy it? I've never seen it in my local grocer. I'd like to try it since I'm tryiing to limit my red meat intake. I love all meats, with the exception of wild game, but I know, as I'm getting up in age, I shouldn't eat it as much.

There's a store locator here:

http://www.westsoytofu.co...bed-seitan

Some regular grocery stores around here carry it and some don't. I had to ask my local store to start carrying it when I moved. It's not super cheap (compared to tofu) but it's probably comparable in price to regular meat.

Is soy mince any good? I notice it has a very high protein content and there's a place near me that does it extremely cheap by the kilo. I want to use it in tomato-based pasta sauces. smile

We would call it soy "crumbles" around here, but yes, I like it. smile It's perfect for a tomato-based sauce. It's GREAT for making sloppy joes or taco "meat". I use it anywhere people would use ground beef here.
