The difference betwen hood and ghetto? A coworker of mine today was saying there is no diff between the two-I said there is, but I can't really articulate it. So, help me out-what is the diff? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Semantics...........it has 2 be related 2 the context in which u are discussing the 2. Someone can grow up in the ghetto or the hood and can be mostly unaffected by it.

No vast diference. I believe that the ghetto terminology was originally used, describing the history of the Jews being isolated, and mistreated collectively in Europe, forced to live in the same living space. Now the terminology today is used to describe a guttery state of mind as well as living in the poor slums, especially for African-Americans. The hood is a more modern terminology version of the ghetto.

I think 'hood' can be an abreviation of 'neighborhood'. Kind of cliquish in connotation. Not neccesarily negative, and in a lot of cases, a badge of honor. 'Ghetto', on the other hand, is almost always associated with busted, raggedy, sub-quality isht. This is what you want...This is what you get.

You can walk around in the hood.
You have to run your ass off in the ghetto.

The hood is short for neighborhood, specifically in the suburbs where there is a crime rate.

If you weren't a resident of a specific ghetto and/or project, you better have gotten the hell out of there BEFORE 5 pm.

In the hood, least folks have the sense to not fuck with you. In the ghetto, you better not even come across it because people don't give a fuck and they'd probably steal your wallet before you can blink.

To me a hood is a place you grew up in as a child, especially if you were poor and lived in an inner city area. Usually the hood was a few blocks, may 10 or 20 in a square, but it was your area, where you knew most people, and they knew you. Uusally you all went to the same schools and your mothers went to the same shops. Hoods were usually in areas some people may call gehttos, but many more were in more respectable areas where we call them neighbourhoods. Its ghetto that people knocked the neighbour part off for ease and because they want to be more lazy and illiterate. Its an area where one could feel safe and know that no one would harm. Leaving your hood would make you vulnerable.
A ghetto on the other hand was originally an area set aside in Venice during the Middle ages for the Jews to live in and practice their trades. Jews were very seldom allowed out and no Jews only in to buy items or use Jewish services such as moneylending. Ghettos spread to other medieveal European cities in Germany (Frankfurt, Worms etc), France, Poland, Italy, Russia etc.
But now a ghetto is just an inner city tip where mostly black people live in America, Indians and mestizons in Latin America, Africans in South Africa, broke people in India and China and other parts of asia. Maoris and Islanders in New Zealand, Aborigines, Vietnamese, Indians, non Western European whites in Australia. Ghetto people in New Zealand usually live in deprived out suburbs planned in the 1960s and 1970s by city authorities that wanted to keep the riff raff out of the cities. In Auckland these suburbs are called Ranui, Lincoln, Otara, Otahuhu, Mangere, Favona, Manurewa, Clendon and Papakura, although parts of these suburbs are not ghetto and are quite nice and ritzy. Usually a motorway or a street divides the ghetto from the good parts. People in these ghettos are usually always Pacific Island (Samoan, Niuean, Cook Islands, Tongan, Fijian) or Maori (Local Polynesian) and he occasional Somalian, Balkan (Macedonian, Arab, Turk, Muslim), Subcontinent (India, Bangladesh, Pakistan). Whites are very rare, usually they are either administrators or married to a local.
Most of the shops are really ghetto like liquor stores on every block, takeaways, KFC's Burger King McDonalds, Pubs with pokie machines, ethnic food shops and cheap sleazy Asian restaurants that have D's in their food certificate, welfare and social service agencies, loan sharks, $2 Ghetto junk shops, cheap 2nd hand clothe shops, local witchdoctors, music shops selling rap and ethnic CD's. Most shops are run by Chinese or Indians as the rents are cheap and margins are on ghetto products like alcohol and junk food. Many Sikhs who are non drinking own liquor stores and make a killing in the hood.
The people mostly live in tiny block apartments from the 60s and 70s, or state houses that are mostly neglected. Public areas are always vandalised and covered in graffiti, you have street gangs, panhandlers, rap music blaring everywhere and these areas are totally no go to outsiders at night.
Crime is really bad, lots of street crime, robberies, home invasions, rape, although shooting and murders are not that common (Maybe 10 ghetto style murders in Otara a year). Otara is our worst ghetto its like 99% Islander, has 40% unemployment, most kids leave school on their 16th birthday and per capita income is 40% of the National level, it full of people who have ghetto names. The houses mostly have junk cars on the front lawn, and people neglect their homes. Its always in the paper for the wrong reasons, disease rates are high especially diabetes as they eat fatty food and shit like KFC. The life expectancy is like 60, when its 80 everywhere else, birth rates are high, lots of teenage and preteen mothers. They love to imitate the American Black rap gangsta culture and style themselves on gehtto street gangs with Samoan Bloods, Tongan Crypz, Niuean Cobras and CMH (Cash Money Hoes) and RBC (Respect Brown Colaz).
Other ghettos include - Cannons Creek and Porirua in Wellington, Deanwell and Rototuna in Hamilton, Aranui, Papanui and Wainoni in Christchurch and Burnside/Green Island in Dunedin.
Australian ghettoes include Mt Druitt, Penrith, Cabramatta and Blacktown in Sydney and Footscray and Sunshine in Melbourne. Surprisngly a lot of broke ass Nz Maoris and Islanders live in these districts along with Vietnamese, Aborigines, Muslims and various African groups.

I don't think it's anything to do with what some people are saying it is.
Hood = With a foreskin. Ghetto = Without.

Ghetto always had a negative connatation attached to it with two definitions Its always been one word some people embrace from their behaivor and just don't care what others think the other is just one particular race/ethincity who are social economically deprived in designated areas. 'Hood' can still be acceptable its just an abbreviated word for 'neighborhood'. Now when you say 'HOODRAT' its define as ghetto ratchet behaivor.

hood - big area outside the city (by city I mean "downtown/popular areas"), stereotypically linked to working and middle classes...
ghetto - negative stereotypes, crime, drugs, racial connotations, immigration, class divisions...

Least this thread doesn't have anything to do with what you're saying.
