Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies

Just saw the breaking news on ESPN's First Take.

RIP Jerry. One of the greatest owners in professional sports.

^^^ Absolutely. No era in pro sports matched style with substance like the Showtime Era.

Buss was smart enough to trust his judgment. Part of that was acknowledging what he didn't know, and hiring the best people he could to help him.

In nearly 35 years, his team went to 16 Finals, winning 10 of them. Even their "lean" years produced some entertaining basketball; the "Lake Show" era featured some entertaining teams, and some of my favorite Lakers players (and provided a blueprint for building title teams later on).

The Lakers were a proud franchise before Buss. He leaves today with that same franchise being arguably the best in all of sports.

Buss is right up there with the Rooneys, Steinbrenners, Krafts & Maras as legendary sports owners.

R.I.P.

One of the truely really great owners.

I wish my Chicago teams had an owner that put winning as a #1 priority.

2 bad his son is going 2 run this team right into the ground.

Sad. But maybe Jeannie will ultimately prevail.

As for Kobe, whose jersey will rightly hang in the Staples rafters one day, please don't get me started . . .

Kobe is a great player but I've NEVER been a fan of his.

Agreed.

I'm a Laker fan, not a Kobe fan. Dr. Buss ultimately made the right decision to keep him over Shaq, but Kobe is a big reason why he had to make that decision at all.

Dr. Buss stuck to his guns on a lot of decisions I disagreed with as a fan but agreed with in hindsight. Credit where credit's due.
