The Girlfriend Hoax

If you aren't aware by now, look no further. College football star Manti Te'o was either in or a victim of a cruel prank. Check out the source site Deadspin.com for the answers.

I don't think there is anything wrong with this. Some nights, when the Captain is too tired to head out to the real clubs, I hook up with an imaginary girlfriend and, you know, and hour later I sneak out her imaginary backdoor. I always leave her an imaginary apple though.

He is a Mormon, he is supposed to abstain from sex until marriage. After this, I'm sure he'll have a few sympathetic REAL women willing to get into his magic underpants.

I'm pretty sure he was in on it. His best friend was the guy running the scam.

Dude just went from a first-rounder to second round or lower draft pick.

Teams will take a lot of questionable characters in their locker rooms but they aren't too keen on bringing in liars/scam artists.

I don't know the details to this story (frankly I don't really care) but I'm thinking that a dude like that having to resort to online girlfriends is probably hiding something (like Graycap stated).

JUST BY COINCIDENCE...I tuned into MTV last night for the first time in ages. Haven't watched it since Real World Hawaii (that was back in 1999!!!).

And I happened to catch the show CATFISH. They track down online relationships and discover the real faces behind the screennames.

So this dude was chatting with some girl but had never spoken to her. They did some investigating for him and finally got the girl to agree to meet him.

Turns out that "she" was a "he".

^Thats more common than one would think, dudes are more into online sex/chat than women.

This does sound very suspect. Either he's hiding something or he's a moron. I'm kinda leaning towards the latter, tho. biggrin

I guess I'm a bit confused by the fact that this is news.

Why is it receiving so much attention? It's somebody's girlfriend.

I mean, yeah--she's fake, but why is this news? I'm perplexed.

The reason why it's getting so much coverage now is because of all the coverage it got while it was happening. Every news outlet big and small, as well as Notre Dame, picked it up, ran with it and kept running without doing even the most simple background or fact checking. It was a huge "heart strings" news story for a good long while, one that EVERYBODY was talking about. That's why the girlfriend being fake, scam or not, is a big story. It has far more to do with media hype and bad reporting than just this guy.

Now, the story itself I still don't fully understand. I don't really get how it all happened to begin with, how it was allowed to snowball and how it's now been exposed as a supposed "scam". Too many holes. Too many people saying good things about the guy, only a few saying bad things. I just don't get it yet.

The Catfish movie is 100 times better than the tv show, btw. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

He went from a first to a third or lower in the BCS Championship game. This may drop him to a fourth rounder but I can't see him being drafted lower than fifth.

Yep.

He could also have a form of that mental problem where you project illnesses on those you love in order to garner attention.

But, I think he's gay from what I can see. It's his face--his eyes.

This of course, makes me feel tremendously sorry for him because although there was this outpouring of support for him due to the 'deaths', the pressures to conform and the effects on your career for being 'out' are tremendous. People really don't get how hard it is in some careers or environments, and asking a person to be a 'pianeer' and lead the way is kind of unfair. SOme people really don't want that. shrug

Too bad he's not bi. I have a bi-football player fantasy, lawd.

It's news because the guy became well known and went to Notre Dame, was second in the Heisman voting and the team was undefeated. Had ND lost a game the past season and played in a Nobody Gives A Fuck bowl, it would not be as hot as it is. Until he does something else extreme to turn away the attention, this will be a shit stain stuck on him for a while.

This has turned into a major story not only because it involves the Heisman runnerup, but also because it appears Notre Dame was involved in the hoax as they thought it would benefit the program. If their involvement is proven to be true, I would expect the NCAA to come down on them hard.

Slow news day? Lance Armstrong's confession was aired yesterday.

Is this another hoax? Trump's congrats are still there, but Deadspin's alleged response is gone. If they removed it that's weak, and if it was a real tweet I can't imagine why Trump hasn't deleted the congrats.

I'll betcha Lance Armstrong hopes this story has legs!

These days when I see the news cycle dominated for days by stories like this it makes me wonder what we're being distracted from....

One dude with an imaginary girlfriend and another that rides bikes for a living doped up? Surely it's not worth more than a couple days coverage at most. I'm sure there's a bunch of things going on that we really need to know about.
