Nightclubs ...

Hi,

I hadn't been in a club for a while... Last night l went out with a friend that came back in the town.

One thing l noticed : I'm 26, (in the middle range age-wise) and out of the say, 100-150 people in that small club, only about 1/3 of us were dancing! The rest was either standing against the wall drinking, ou just sitting THE WHOLE NIGHT...

I don't know if it's a cultural thing, but my friend, who was coming from London, was pretty shocked : he told me in London, EVERYBODY would be dancing...

The music was actually dull (l undesrtand what people like Vainandy mean, more and more) : You have the choice between electro-eurodance-techno-shit or that slow southern-influence hip-hop à la Lil Wayne, Drake, Rick Ross... How are you supposed to dance and sweat to that shit???

It really ain't what it used to be neutral

1) Are you a club-goer?

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

4) What kind of music moves you?

5) How do/did people club in your area?

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

1) Are you a club-goer?

not any more! I was more a live music scene-goer

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I never really started, I probably only went to a club like 20 times in my whole life lol

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

danced the whole time nod

4) What kind of music moves you?

I used to go to a place called retro, it was new wave grandpa

5) How do people club in your area?

I'll ask my kids!

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

To accompany my friends generally

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Nope. Although there was this one time, when a very beautiful guy told me he bet he could have a very interesting conversation with me. I could have taken him home, if only there wasn't already a warm body waiting for me in my bed that night razz

I'm the mistake you wanna make

1000 years ago when I went clubbing it was the same too... its not the era or culture, its the music choice.

Any boring music will keep folks at the bar.

1) Are you a club-goer?

No. Not on a regular basis, but once in a while. I find it sad when men over 30 have to hit the club nightly. Not sure why, because I don't feel this way about hitting the pub, etc.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I personally stopped at around 28ish? I got a full time job and was getting my Master's degree. I found it impossible to fit everything in and still get a degree, so I quit. It wasn't something I thought about....it was just I would skip Friday night to prepare a presentation, then Monday night to do a report, etc. and finally, I just stopped. (Mind you, on a regular basis. I still went on special occasions)

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

Before my weight gain, all the time. As I'm dropping weight now, I would imagine I may go dancing again, but the clubs here are really really geared towards ultra beautiful and young folks.

4) What kind of music moves you?

Very hard to explain. I've had dance nights were everyone got into a trance over gothic music, or techno/house, etc....the music was important, but not as much as everyone just going through this strange religious sensation while doing it together. Hard to explain.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

Well, I'm in Bangkok--10 million people, and hundreds of bars and nightclubs. Soooooo, that's hard to answer.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

By far, to dance. Far down the line is to entertain friends, or have sex.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Why yes. yes, I have.

I never did the nightclub thing.

I probably don't need to take my shoes off to count the times that I've been in a club in my life.

When I was in high school/college I watched Club MTV all the time, does that count for anything?

lol

1) Are you a club-goer?

Not anymore. I used to be when I was younger, though. I still go out for certain specific dance nights on occasion but not regularly.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I sorta trailed off around age 30, I think. When I turend 21 I would go out several nights a week. By mid-20's that was down to 1 or 2 nights a week. Eventually it was a once every couple of months kinda thing.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

A lot. That's the main reason to go to clubs. There would be nights the musci wasn't great or you'd want to spend time chatting with folks and being social but there were other nights where I'd be on the dancefloor from the moment I walked in till I left.

4) What kind of music moves you?

When I was going regularly it was house music or, heck, what did I listen to back then? Alternative pop? Yeah, that. Brit pop too. Oh, and there were industrial nights I went to too.

These days I got to dance nights that focus on rare and classic soul and funk music. SO FUN! There's also a DJ that's does nights called "Transmission" - "Bringing you the best in new wave, no wave, indie rock, British pop, garage, mod, punk, post-punk, synth-pop, electro and everything in between (a night for people who like good music)". I used to go that fairly regularly, now it's a once a year kinda thing, but it's a good time and very age-mixed crowd. I'm an old lady now. lol

5) How do/did people club in your area?

I followed a very specific club scene. Or scenes. It was centered around the kind of music that would be playing. It was always all about the music. The clubs that were all about seeing and being seen weren't really my thing.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

Dancing! Having a good time with friends.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Yup. And that's all I'll say about that.

1) Are you a club-goer?

  • Not anymore. Even when I was younger, it wasn't quite my scene. I couldn't wait to start hanging out in NYC, but once I got there, it wasn't as fun as I thought.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

  • It really didn't last long at all...

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

  • The few times that I went out, I danced a little, but I found the dance floor too crowded, or I felt like I couldn't get into the music.
  • Nowadays, a club to me is a place where I get a table (down front) and listen to a artist/band play for me.

4) What kind of music moves you?

  • I like my guitar "nasty" and my bass "funky". wink

5) How do/did people club in your area?

  • It varies. I'm in NJ, so the clubs around here are different than the ones in NYC, and in both places there are clubs for all ages & tastes

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

  • When I was younger, I thought it'd be cool to go out and meet people. Now it's about kicking back and enjoying the music.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

  • No. (Okay, once... in AC a long time ago. boxed)

1) Are you a club-goer?

Nope. I've been to the club, but most of the time when I went, I would have just an "ok" time. I can count on one hand the times I went to the club and actually had a lot of fun. I'm more of a "jazz lounge" type person now. I'm more into hearing live music rather the same old underground "club" music that is played every single time you go to a club...it gets stale and it bores me.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I stopped going to clubs in my late 20's when I finally learned to be comfortable not being the typical 20-ish club person that everyone expects folks in their 20's to be.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

It depends. If I'm at a concert of one of my favorite artists (sober), then I'm on my feet dancing the whole time. As far as the club would go, the only time I would get out and dance was when I was nearly drunk. lol

4) What kind of music moves you?

Fast tempo jazzy type funk music.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

Well the clubs here really suck. Most of the time there's a fight and the club gets shut down. After that happens, a new one opens up across the street sort of meant to be more like a lounge but after a while turns into a "club" like atmosphere and then the idiots start coming in. Once the idiots start showing up, I stop going.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

I don't have a purpose to go "clubbing"...but I love going to lounges to unwind with a glass of red wine, listen to some music, mingle with folks and chill out.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

No. There would be guys who wanted my number while looking at me like a T-bone steak but I would either give them the number of the local pizza hut (as my number) or tell them I had a man already. My other friends of course were different cases. If they took a guy home or exchanged numbers, it never lasted long and a few found out the guys already had girlfriends or wives at home with much drama to add to their situations.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Your friend is lying. lol

In London clubs plenty of people just stand around drinking or watching others or just plain posing. It's one of the reasons I rarely go out dancing here.

1) Are you a club-goer?

Yes.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

Pretty much every week or every other week. I've been doing it 20-30 times a year for a few years now. I don't like doing it so often during the winter as I don't particularly enjoy trying to get back home when I'm drunk as fuck, it's 4AM and it's freezing. I'll "stop" if I'll have a wife and kids someday, I guess. Or if I'll just get bored of it.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

Yes. As much as the person that's agreed to join me on the dance floor wants to.

4) What kind of music moves you?

I don't really expect the music in most clubs to be something that I am that much into. It can be TOP40 stuff for all I care. I don't want to be on the dance floor when they play the worst type of bullshit though (e.g. Pitbull type of stuff). I prefer live gigs by bands if I want to go out with the intention of listening to the type of music that I like myself. However, I'm pretty happy if the DJ plays MJ, Prince, The Cure etc.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

Ehm. I don't think it's any different to any other "areas". I live in Finland, so you can count on people being really drunk in most places though.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

Meeting people (yes, women) and just observing what happens in different types of places. It provides a nice break from everything else.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Yes. That's why I initially started to go into them even if I didn't like those places at all when I was younger. I had been with just a few women before that and just wanted to get more experience in such matters. I've had one night stands and a few of them have developed into short relationships.

I should add that you shouldn't really expect that much from having sex with someone after the clubs close early in the morning and when you've been drunk all night. Many times I've just literally ended up sleeping with the person.

1.Are you a club-goer?

I used to be an every week cluber but I'm not now

2.How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I only go now when there's a party being thrown by someone I know, I'll always go to those if I'm up to it, I used to go every Friday/Saturday night in my late teens(we knew the people at the doors at four of the spots I used to go to, lol!) until I was about 26/27.

3.Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

Yup, I'm one of those nasty bumper-n-grinders lol!! Of course the right kinda ladies got to be on the dance floor for me to do that

4.What kind of music moves you?

Funk, 80's-90's hip hop, Disco, and basically any music that get's the ladies on the dance floor

5.How do/did people club in your area?

In Philly like most big cities there's a club for all different tastes, it's all about what your into I guess

6.What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

When I was an every week cluber it was all about hooking up with different ladies and having a good time, now on the rare occasion that I go it's just about hanging with my friends mostly. Of course there might still be a hook up or two, lol!

7.Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more?

No doubt, it was the only reason me and my boys used to go. We would always look for the girls who came in groups and try to get them back to my boy J's spot because he was the first one to get his own place when we graduated H.S. We scored OFTEN! LOL

I would love to go to a GOOD night out - occasionally, not every day, but here in Godforsaken India I can't because all the clubs are in 5-star hotels and cost maybe 1000 Rs. (probably the cheapest) to get into. Not only do I not have that kind of money, I also don't care for the crowd that does.

1) Are you a club-goer?

I used to be. Not anymore though.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

In the early 1990s, I went every single night the gay clubs were open which were Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. During that time I worked nights in a convenience store and got off work at 10 p.m., partied all night, and didn't have to go back to work until 2 p.m. the next afternoon. I went strictly to the black gay club back then. Even though music on R&B radio was absolutely horrible and filled with shit hop and adult contemporary, the black gay club played nothing but uptempo house/dance such as Martha Wash, Robin S, M People, Crystal Waters, etc. with a little fast rap such as 2 Live Crew, Duice, 95 South, 69 Boyz, Dis N Dat, etc. mixed in. With the exception of some of the slow songs performed during the drag shows, only one slow song was played during the night and it was played at the very end of the night as the last song to let people know the club was closing. But other than that, when it was strictly the DJ mixing for people to dance on the dancefloor, absolutely no slow, nor midtempo songs were played....ever. In the white gay club during that time, they played some of the dance/house that the black club played, but they also played more dark and depressing type stuff like Depeche Mode and also a different type of underground dance music which has been called many things throughout the years such as acid house, trance, and more recently is being called euro dance or euro disco. When black friends and I would go across the street to the white club, we used to call the music "white house music". I went to the white club a few times back then but I mainly stayed in the black club because the music was 50 times better.

In 1999, I finally got a job in an office which was an 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. job and is still my present job. In the early 2000s, I mostly went out on Saturday nights only, not only because I worked days instead of nights, but also because the music in the clubs had taken a drastic turn for the worst. I completely stopped going to the black club and started going to the white club exclusively. The black club started playing slow to midtempo shit hop which is not only totally undanceable, but is also unbearable to be in the same room with for even a few minutes, let alone a few hours. The white club was still playing trancelike stuff along with stuff like Cher's "Believe" album tracks, No Doubt, etc. The music wasn't the greatest but it was at least tolerable. The majority of the older black gay people stopped going to the black club and started going to the white club so the gay black club ended up looking like a gay thugged out prison version of the cast of "Barney".

As each year went by in the 2000s, the white club also started playing some shit hop, not much of it but even one song is inexcuseable. I mainly had more fun in the 2000s at house parties with gay people around my own age who were bored with the music scene in the clubs so they would have get-togethers at someone's house. Everyone has either died now (AIDS ain't no joke) or moved away to another city such as Chicago thinking there was a better music scene in bigger cities and that Mississippi hadn't caught up with them. Then, they've gotten up North only to call back down here and bitch that the black clubs up there are overrun with shit hop also. I tried to tell them that shit hop isn't just a Mississippi thing and that it has contaminated the entire world but they refused to believe me and had to find out for themselves. lol

Nowadays, I don't go out at all. I've been out maybe three times in the last three years and that was three times too many. I should have stayed home those three nights and saved my money. When I moved about two and a half years ago, I moved to a suburb town about five miles from Jackson and the police out here don't play. There's no crime so they don't have anything better to do with their time than to set up road blocks and try to catch drivers under the influence of alcohol coming home after clubbing in Jackson. There's no way in hell I would have lived out here years ago when I lived to go clubbing but it doesn't bother me now because I have no intention of going out. The rent is much cheaper out here in an actual safe area of town as opposed to inside the city limits of Jackson where it is much more expensive and isn't safe. I spend lots of weekends nowadays drinking with my brother.....big thrill. lol

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

I used to. Lord yes, I used to......and a lot! And my white ass never danced "white" either, I've always danced "black" and had the rhythm to do it. lol Picture the girls coming down the "Soul Train" line prior to 1982 when they actually got off instead of trying walk down the line and pose, and that's me right there. Plenty of ass shakin' and tittie rollin', just workin' it honey! None of that choreographed Broadway "Solid Gold", Gene Anthony Ray on "Fame", leaping mess either and none of that hopping around on pogo sticks dancing like the white kids did on "American Bandstand" either. I get off! lol

If I were to go out nowadays, would I dance? Hell no. How would I? The music is undanceable. It's either shit hop which is too slow, or trance which is too fast. Andy don't stand around throwing hand gestures like an idiot swatting flies and he also don't hop around like a rabbit on speed jumping on a pogo stick either. The last few times I've been out, the dance floor is completely empty. I mean, not even ONE person on it. A few people were sitting around the bar but the majority of them were on the outside patio either smoking or hanging out with their friends that smoke.....which is another reason I don't go out anymore, these new rediculous "No Smoking in Clubs" laws now. I can see in restaurants, but in clubs, oh hell naw. If you're drinking, that's when you'll really chainsmoke one after the other. And one of the little goodie goodie prissy queens who used to bitch and make that little fake cough around smokers was sitting around the bar that night bitching because he never gets any dick anymore because everyone is outside with the smokers. Hell, serves that bitch right....and he'll never go out there and try to pick up some dick because everyone remembers his ass bitching about the smoking when it was inside so he'd get cussed out if he went out outside and started hanging out with them trying to get some dick. lol

4) What kind of music moves you?

Funk is what really moves me but funk's heyday was when I was underage so the only partying I could do back then was in skating rinks. As an adult when I started clubbing, the music that moved me was house. I would have preferred funk but I took what I could get.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

I honestly don't know how most people party in my area now. I know how a lot of older black straight people party. There a lot of hole in the wall "cafes" that play blues and that's where a lot of them go. They're not really "clubs" but more like a "bar" with a pool table with maybe a small dance floor, if there's even a dance floor at all. There are clubs for younger straight black people and they all play shit hop. The black gay clubs (we have two of them now) play shit hop, we now have a black lesbian club and they play shit hop, and the two white gay clubs play trance and shit hop. The older white elite artsty/fartsy crowd goes to clubs that have live bands that play blues (not the same blues that the average black people in Mississippi listen to....these are the "old black man sitting on a front porch playing a guitar and moaning" type blues....in other words, elite white outsiders exploring ancient black Mississippi "culture" barf ) and some of them go to clubs where a live band plays covers of old pop/rock songs. I have no idea what kind of clubs the younger straight white crowd has. I would assume clubs that play whatever is current on pop/rock radio which is a mixture of rock and shit hop.

What I was curious about, is where the white straight people my age (mid 40s) party. Yeah, the more elite artsy/fartsy ones go to the places that have live bands that play old cover songs but I was curious as where the average, everyday middle class ones go. Jackson has always had a huge black population but it is now about 80% black. The only white people that remain in Jackson now are the ones that live in Northeast Jackson and they are either the extremely rich that live in mansions or the very "well off" ones. South Jackson used to be the area where the poor whites lived and also the rednecks. South Jackson is also the area where all their clubs used to be. South Jackson is 99% black now and is now full of crime and boarded up stores and houses. All the white people previously from this area now live in Rankin County, which is where I live now, and Rankin County sells beer but not liquor and clubs aren't allowed out here. More black people live in Rankin County now also because it has affordable areas that are actually safe. Well, Jackson is fairly safe when it comes to personal safety but it's not safe when it comes to your belongings. My brother went out one night with a friend of his and I asked him where they went because I've been curious for a long time now where white straight people my age party. To my surprise, there are a very few of those white clubs, well not "clubs" but they are "bars", and they still exist in their same locations in South Jackson. An all black area with a white "bar" sitting right in the middle of it. And I asked him what type of music they played and he said country. I said "Country!". And he said "Well, that's all they play in the bars nowadays and it's either that or stay at home". Those "bars" have always been redneck country bars but apparently the average everyday middle class white straight person in my area these days just doesn't party anymore and all their clubs closed so the few left that do want to go out, have no other choice than to go slumming with the rednecks. And even though they may want to hear some rock such as Van Halen, those few clubs still in existence in that area have always been country bars and will always be country. The rock clubs closed years ago.

Well damn, I done gave you a long and complicated answer to your question but there was no other way to answer it because even though Mississippi is no longer legally segregated, most of them pretty much still keep to themselves with their "own kind". Ain't many whores like me down here. lol

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

It used to be to drink, dance, party, and hopefully bring home some dick. If you didn't get lucky and bring home some dick, at least you had a good time partying so nothing was lost. Nowadays, it's strictly when you're EXTREMELY horny and at the point of DESPERATION looking for some dick and have nowhere else to turn. And if you don't get lucky and bring home some dick, then you've wasted money and dodged police all the way home for nothing because there sure was no good time had in the club.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Hell yeah! What do you mean someONE? Hell, I've worked three or four at a time and come home and had a damn orgy but that's only been on an extremely lucky night. But hell, that's the purpose of going out is to bring home some dick. And yes, the majority of them have been one night stands and I've never seen them again. Many of them, I didn't even ask their name because there name isn't what I was interested in. lol

1) Are you a club-goer? Nope.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop? Probably been inside of a club less than 15 times my entire life. I never much got into it as a single guy, and I go now only when I'm forced by my wife. She, in turn, goes only when forced by her close friends, and that is rare.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not? I would sooner have died than dance in a club prior to, say, my 30th birthday. I was way too shy. redface Now, on the rare occasion that I'm in a club, I'm pretty much made to dance. I'm apparently not a bad dancer, and my wife's friends always want to "borrow" me when my wife is done with me. disbelief

4) What kind of music moves you? When I've been made to dance, I've found I can be pumped up by all sorts of music. For some reason, though, I can't work most Latin styles.

5) How do/did people club in your area? I couldn't tell you much about the Toronto scene. I've only been to one club in my 7 years here, and it was a very exclusive outing. For her 40th birthday, a friend of ours splurged on a table, dinner, and all-night bottle service at a little-known spot where visiting celebrities like to hang out. Lots of very well kept people who'd presumably spent quite a bit to be inside. And there was probably more posing and beautiful-people watching than much else. Back in Cleveland, I think the scene aspired to be like that, but the folk there with any personality hadn't the money -- and those with money hadn't the personality -- to cultivate such a subculture.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing? I don't. I go only when made to.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? Been flirted with by guys and girls, but nope.

1) Are you a club-goer?

In my teens and twenties I was....

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

I stopped in my late twenties when that scene became boring and I no longer had a "club-buddy" to roll with. Also the night clubs in my area suck.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

I be the first person on the dance floor and mostly only got off to get water or the one hard drink I would allow myself.

4) What kind of music moves you?

I love funk/soul/r&b/salsa music to dance to most, but any music with a heavy groove that can make me shake my ass will do. I love ALL kinds of music, but music must make you wanna dance, if it doesn't its just organized noise... the only exception is opra.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

I live in a college town so ALL clubs shut down at 2am... it is very diverse and dancehall reggae clubs are the the most heavily attenended and very dangerous. HUGE West Indian, Haitian, African community here, and those that come "fresh off the boat" are usually dangerous men that are the reason why I would NEVER set foot in those establishments. They think they own you is they buy you one drink and have stabbed women on the dance floor or follow them outside to rape them since some nutjobs do not understand what the word "NO" means. No thanks. Fuck that. I only clubbed in the "white areas" (yes at the time Boston was very much segregated in the 90's).

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

To DANCE only, I saw women who picked up guys at the club as dumbasses- I still do.

-Go with my girls, leave with my girls!!!

-Don't approach me

-I do not want you to buy me any fucking drink, I can buy my own

-Don't stare at me while I dance, its fucking creepy

-Move the fuck out my way when I dance

-Bitch if you touch me Imma kick your ballz in your ass and stomp your face

-I ALWAYS snuck a sharp knife in on my person, touch me, I WILL cut you and stayed close to bouncers JIC so weirdos kept their distance

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Are you fucking kidding me? You see those assholes where I clubbed and you would understand. Some of the corninest and fulgiest guys would hit the clubs. No freggin way!! Eww, no, just eww!!

I would dance with a guy or two, but I would like to mostly climb up on the bar/stage/pedestal to just dance my troubles away. I came to sweat!

i hate going out at night. Strictly happy hour for me. I used to go out dancing in the 80's. And all the dj's in town knew I liked Prince. As soon as I walked in the door, they put on the prince. Lemon crush, erotic city anything prince. I was hot back then. Now I never dance in public. Now I am a strictly home party person, and if they put on some prince, I dance. Only way.

I used to be. Now not so much anymore.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

Before I went almost every weekend. Around mid-thirties I stopped. I never cared much about meeting new people, but then I started to detest them.

When I accidentally end up in a club, I still love to dance, and then I even can like the crowds. That's the exception though.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

That is the reason to go to a club right? Dance to the music.

4) What kind of music moves you?

Any kind. If it´s good it doesn´t matter what category some people want to place it in.

Any rythm is music. And that´s good enough for me.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

I don´t know.

I have always preferred going on my own. I would go to places where I knew friends would be. Sometimes I would tag along with friends.

I also got spoiled because my neighbours were in the circuit, so I went out with them or got invited to their gig or evenings. Allthough now they are not my neighbours anymore, I still see them and they invite me for the good stuf or get me on the guestlist if they can. I´m spoiled that way.

Amsterdam offers a wide variety of different music styles. So people will go where their favorite band or DJ is performing. For every taste there´s womewhere something to do in town wink

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

Dancing.

Seeing a band.

Having fun with friends or random people on the dancefloor.

Play around, clubs always feel like kindergartens to me.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? razz

Yes.

I clubbed up until my mid 30's but clubbing and dancing were paramount in the Black community then; if you couldn't dance you didn't have much of a social life. I've never not danced, I still dance, I love to dance, and will dance to I'm no longer able. We have some clubs in the greater Chicago are that cater to Steppin'. Or, Stepper-sets are organized as functions held at a banquet hall or hotels. People then came to dance their ass off and when you entered a Black club you have to be dressed to the nines and you better know how to dance. Nobody tripped over what you look like, you were asked to dance and that was that. If a man saw a women not dancing they'd ask her to the dance floor. Not to say passes weren't attempted and fack home numbers were given biggrin

I went to clubs alone, with relatives, men, women or a combination of all three. Funk, Soul, House, and Disco gets me on my feet every-time. Never had a one night stand or left a club with a man I just met, that's just damn crazy and dangerous. The club scene in the Black community is all but dead, live music is nonexistent. The club scene now is knowing when to go, to avoid the 20 somethings never go on the weekend. Steppers go to a club during the week and there's a dress code which leaves the hip-hoppers at home polishing their gym shoes and playing video games. Besides, they can't Step hell, that can't dance. That's why they are alll up against the wall like they are a support beam and shit. lol Amazing.

Fonkyman

1) Are you a club-goer?

I haven't been clubbing in years but I'll probably always feel like a clubber.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when did you stop?

In my teens I was in the pub almost half the week, every week. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights I'd go to 'nightclubs' when the pubs kicked out. Nightclubs, where they'd play the top 40 and mainstream whatever while drunken numpties would dance about under glitterballs. Most of them on the pull. At the end they'd play a few slow tunes. If you hadn't been grabbed or grabbed someone already it was time for a mooch about.

The whole place would be doing the same dance. Depending on how well you were doing you'd either have handfuls of wobbly bits or handfuls of not so wobbly hips or shoulders. You'd all do the same dance regardless. Standing on the spot, more or less hugging, you'd work your way clockwise for no apparent reason. If you got lucky, you got lucky. If you went round too quickly, you got dizzy. They were glorified pubs with louder music, lights and dancefloors.

In the late 80's and early '90s 'clubbing' took on a whole new meaning. The nightclubs carried on with the same old thing while we all went for a party. People started opening warehouses or old buildings and putting on all-nighters. Not always legally. Most of the time no-one knew where they were, or knew someone that knew someone who knew. Everyone would end up driving round in drug addled convoys, half of them not knowing who they were following or where to. Stopping for clues along the way or word from whoever, you'd get to some place and party. If it hadn't already been busted. After a while it all had to be licenced.

It stopped being something you'd do after the pub. If anything, it stopped me going to the pub as much. It was a whole scene. In place of the beer it was trips, pills, potions and shitloads of pot. The clothes changed, the music changed, the attitude changed. Now when you were out if you knocked somebodys drink they'd more likely buy another one and get you one too. You'd have got chinned in a lot of pubs before.

I'd go every week. Sometimes twice if there was something on. A lot of the time a Friday 'night out' would turn into a weekend and I wouldn't see my bed til Sunday. A lot would be one-off things or there'd only be a few before it all moved around. I stopped going all the time in my 20s and I couldn't do it now if I wanted to. A few mates have played here and there and we've had some blinders. I've partied in the field all night and still pissed and moaned when it was time to go home. Looking back, popping another pill for the sunrise aint always a good idea.

I've heard people like Aphex Twin, Black Dog etc. all in their early days. Had smokes with the FatCat lads and chatted with Mixy Morris and his mate who had some of the best Sensi I ever smoked. (Cheers for that bit). I can't name a single DJ from a nightclub but I know a load from clubbing. They're very different things.

I wouldn't say I've stopped. Haven't been for years but I wouldn't rule out going again. Mentally I'd probably go a bit. Physically I'm a bit tired and not really up for it.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

Not like I used to. When I was clubbing I'd dance all night long. All over the place too. I'd jump in with anyone, do what they were doing for a bit, make it fonky (or fall over) and move on. Nowadays I get neck ache just nodding my head. I have a little jig indoors now and then. I can't jig about like I used to but Imma fonkyman and I got oil on ma hands. I got a brand new dance anyway.

4) What kind of music moves you?

Shit. All kinds in all kinds of ways. What makes me wanna dance? Not Eddie Grant for a kick off.

I can dance to anything if I like it. I hate labelling music. If I say I like Techno you could think I mean Gabba and get the wrong idea altogether. Same with a lot of it. Put it this way. I couldn't stay still listening to a lot of P-Funk, Prince, Sly, James Brown, etc.. Funk. Techno, Acid, Electronica, Ambient and on and on etc. etc. rraaahhhh... All sorts.

5) How do people club in your area?

Not like they do in Canada, thankfully. I'm well out of it all so I wouldn't know really. There's still the nightclubs for the after-pub crowd. A lot of the clubs I used to go to have moved on, got bigger or turned into festivals or fizzled out. Some of the venues are still going and a lot of the people that were making the music are still going strong.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

"If music be the food of love, taste the sounds that nourish". Something like that anyway. You can't beat having it pounded through your body either.

Nightclubbing was for a late beer and a dance with the totty. Clubbing was getting your fix. Hearing new tunes, New DJs and artists and having it buzzed through your bones. Dancing your ass off too. I've had some great nights with complete strangers clubbing. Shit-faced in ambient rooms having deep conversations of nonsense. 90% of the club would be loved up one way or another and soaked to the skin, still dancing. They weren't doing the 'clockwise shuffle' either. Some of those nights were as good as any gig.

7) Ever picked someone or been picked in a club? One night Stand or more?

I've been with my missus for over 20 years. She wasn't into clubbing but could be reading this so lalalala lalala la lala lala. zipped

I met a lot of people. I danced with some people.

1) Are you a club-goer?

Used to be in my 20's. Now less often.

2) How often? When do you think you'll stop? or when didi you stop?

In my 20's 2 (sometimes 3) times a week. Now less than 10 times a year. Slowed down after making a home with my partner of over 15 years.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!! A LOT. I've never understood going to a dance club to stand around.

4) What kind of music moves you?

Dance, funk, Pop (mixes), Electronica.

5) How do/did people club in your area?

Same as most I suppose. I don't pay much attention to others' clubbing habits.

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing?

To DANCE and have fun with friends. When I was younger it was that, and sometimes hook up, or sometimes perform.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more?

Umm yeah! Both! lol

One night stands and more. My partner of over 15 years and I met at a club. wink

** I went to a nightclub last year for my friend's 50th birthday party.

I felt out of place; the majority of the people there were my age (40s) or older.

The women were dressed in ways that should have stopped a WHILE ago- time had not been kind to some of those bodies.

The men seemed pathetic... One man who asked me to dance was easily my Dad's age.

(I ran into a guy I went to high school with- he had fuzzy cornrows that started in the middle of his head like Stevie Wonder, and a gold tooth! faint)

My friend had a great time, and I was happy for her, but I couldn't wait to get out of there. Not. My. Scene. shake

cattlemarkets? lol i was going from the age of 14, we'd slap on makeup & somehow manage to get into the clubs, those were the days before they insisted on ID! then all through my teens, weekends & weekdays, we lived for clubbing.

i was a regular in ibiza in the late 80's, the club scene was wild.

my 'kids' are doing the same thing now, i can't help thinking they are being short changed! they can't have had as much fun as i did.

1) Are you a club-goer? Not anymore. It's been at least 12 years since I've been to one.

2) How often? Back when I used to go it wasn't very often, I mostly went when I was in my early 20's.When do you think you'll stop? N/A or when didi you stop? 12 years ago.

3) Do you dance? a little? a lot? or not? A lot

4) What kind of music moves you? funk, r&b, soul, pop, hip-hop, dance, disco.

5) How do/did people club in your area? Well, I went to a few different places in the Sacramento, Ca. area, they sort of sucked, and really weren't much fun at all. that's why I stopped going. I felt out of place there. Seems like there would always be a gang fight or shooting after the club closed. I liked the dance clubs in Copacabana/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil sooooo much, now those were awesome clubs, i still miss those sometimes. wink

6) What's your purpose of going out and clubbing? To look at hot guys mostly.

7) Ever picked someone or being picked in a club? One night Stand or more? No, I always went with other friends, I did hook up with a few guy friends though that I went to the club with in Brazil. But I already knew them and had a crush on them before we ever went dancing.
