ipod/mp3/dvd question

good evening people of the org

(well its 8am in NZ)

i need some advice regarding purchasing one of these new fangled ibod players

As sopme of you know i recently got my ipod nicked with ALL my prince music...aye the lot.Me little purple ipod gone.

(my cds are in an attic in england)

Now as luck would have it my pal in england has been digging on the wee man since i have (84-word y'all)

Now i reliase that i never listen to any non soundboard boots at all anymore and therefore can cull my purple needs

HOWEVER my plan was to buy a brand new ipod 16gb(110 quid) and get him to load that but it probs wont be enough..

what would be your suggestion to put it on?

i then plan to back it onto harddrive as i aint losing that again (the problem being i cant escape the feeling that all this ipod nonsense is so transient...)

anyway i waffle.....ipod? sony? what???

* disclaimer-i am a fuckwit technically. i read books not a kindle.

If it were me, I would load everything directly from his computer to a portable hard drive. And from there, load it onto your computer. That way, you have everything - and can swap out what you're listening to on whatever player you opt for from time to time. You can get buy a 500G portable USB drive for around $80US. A good name to look for is LaCie.

I agree that a 16G player is probably too small, but a 32G iPod should be adequate - especially if you rotate what's on there.

Well, if that's what you want to do. But someday, that iPod is going to quit on you - or be lost or stolen again - and you'll be right back where you started. If it's on a portable hard drive, you can keep your library at home, where it's more likely to be safe.

The other alternative is to buy a teeny-tiny flash drive (the kind that will fit on a keyring) and mail that. You can get a 60G for around $40US.

I would never mail an iPod. shrug

instead of getting an ipod/mp3 player, especially one thats only 32gb, i'd suggest you get a smartphone, as that can double as a media player as well as a phone, and do all sorts of stuff like play angry birds, skype, satnav, etc

if you choose the right android model you could get one with a miniSD card slot, most of which take cards up to 32gb, and a 32gb card can be had for as low as around £15, and some can take a 64gb card - which at the moment these are much higher priced at about £40, more than twice a 32gb card, but prices go down pretty fast so at some time this year i'd expect them to hit closer to the £20 mark. the good thing about the cards is you can have more than one and swap them about, so studio stuff on one, live on another, and stick all your kylie and SAW and michael jackson shit on another

if you did that, then your mate just needs to buy the tiny wee card, load it up and mail it, which would be cheap to send

alternatively if you really want an ipod, look for an ipod classic 160gb or 120gb model which you should be able to get for about £100, and will hold piles of music

yeah, if you went down the ipod route, you can get a 64gb USB stick for about £20, he just puts the files on and mails it. or if you are talking small amounts of data like that, he could just upload it online and you can download it, and that would be quicker than snail mail. you can upload to dropbox and get a 48gb+ locker for free or use wetrans for 2gb of files at a time for free

Now you're adding a new wrinkle. If you want full sound, you want .wav or .flac files - which are huge. That means you definitely want to load this stuff to a hard drive. That way, you can condense the files to AAC to save space on an iPod, while retaining the full tracks for burning to CDs or playing at home.

heres what i bought....

apparently fifty quid down 12 quid on amazon!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/A...mp;sr=1-16

daft question

is a fancy pants ipod any different than a flash drive in terms of music quality?

is it all basically the same technology but we are getting ripped off for the brand?

i always buy adidas gazzelles/campus but i KNOW they are no different than a cheap ass pair!

my prince dvds take up about 2TB. the biggest flashdrive you can get just now is 512gb and that's about £400. a 256gb is about £270. the 64gb are the best price per pound at the moment, 128gb ones jump considerably in size. a single layer dvd is 4.3gb and a dual layer disc is 8.5gb so you wouldn't get many dvds on a flashdrive. what you could get is a 2.5" portable HDD. you can get 2TB ones for about £100 now, or 1TB for about £55. they are self powered from usb so you don't need a seperate power supply if using from a laptop. you can get some where the cable is built in and winds into the caddy for portable convenience. it's obviously bigger than a flashdrive and won't fit in a jeans pocket but would fit in a jacket pocket no problem without weighing it down. a standard 3.5" in a caddy would need big pockets and weigh the jacket down. if you don't need the portability you could get a 4tb drive for about £130. but whatever you do, make a backup, so typically you would need 2 drives as if one breaks you can lose everything
