Ladies...can YOU tell a cheating man by sight alone?

Women can tell a cheating...hem: study

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Women can tell with some accuracy whether an unfamiliar male is faithful simply by looking at his face, but men seem to lack the same ability when checking out women, according to an Australian study published on Wednesday.

In a paper that appeared in the journal Biology Letters, the researchers found that women tended to make that judgment based on how masculine-looking the man was.

"Women's ratings of unfaithfulness showed small-moderate, significant correlations with measures of actual infidelity," wrote the team, led by Gillian Rhodes at the ARC Centre of Excellence in Cognition and its Disorders at the University of Western Australia in Perth.

"More masculine-looking men (were) rated as more probable to be unfaithful and having a sexual history of being more unfaithful."

Attractiveness was not a factor in the women making the link.

In the study, 34 men and 34 women were shown colour photographs of 189 Caucasian adult faces and asked to rate them for faithfulness.

The researchers compared their answers to the self-reported sexual histories of the 189 individuals and found that the women participants were better able to tell who was faithful and who was not.

"We provide the first evidence that faithfulness judgments, based solely on facial appearance, have a kernel of truth," they wrote in the paper.

Men, on the other hand, seemed to have no clue. They tended to perceive attractive, feminine women to be unfaithful, when there was no evidence that they were, the scientists noted.

Faithfulness is seen as important in the context of sexual relationships and mate choice, the scientists wrote in the paper. Men with unfaithful partners risk raising another man's child, while women with unfaithful partners risk losing some, or even all, parental and other resources to competitors.

All men are natural cheaters.

It's just that some make the conscious decision not to cheat.

I think the study needs to be replicated before any solid conclusion can be drawn.

Would be intersting if there would be an interracial effect if included as an extra factor. However, that would complicate the research a lot.

I think the most reliable conclusion was:

"Men, on the other hand, seemed to have no clue." evillol

I don't think 'natural & cheaters' go hand in hand

there are many men who are very faithful partners,

it's been said when a man falls in love in it to the end

and I guess that is the place a woman should want a man before marrying him

There was a study i read that women are likely to cheat certain biologically periods

where it's really animal. They said these women will marry a man for certain stable

characteristics for a family, that might not have anything to do with looks (I'm listening to Vibrator right now ... weird combination of discussion and music lol) but during certain periods of 'ovulation' women will go after that/their physical ideal of masculinity. They talked about the fact that many faithful married men are taking care of children they didn't father, but don't know it...

OK...let me make a HUGE disclosure before I say what I need to say...

I do not, in any way/shape/form condone or approve of infidelity. I value commitment as a sacred thing. If you are in a monogamous relationship, then honor it for the sake of your partner and your own self-respect.

THAT BEING SAID, I think that it's in our nature to stray. I'm not saying that we automatically DO, I'm saying it's how we're programmed.

Most guys "sow their seeds" in their teens & twenties then settle down & get married, and for the most part, if we're in a good relationship, then we can keep that monogamous commitment.

But...given the opportunity (to not get caught) & enough of a temptation...most guys would have a one night stand. It takes alot of social conditioning (ingrained moral values, religious ethics, etc.) to say 'no thank you' to a hot piece of @ss sitting at the bar after that all-day meeting who wants to go up to your room for the night and your wife/girlfriend/whatever will never find out. And go home to that wife/girlfriend that we LOVE as if nothing happened (since again, sex can be just sex).

Not to say women won't do the same thing...but as far as my experience has shown me...women are more like to shun such an encounter even if their spouse/boyfriend would never find out. When a woman "cheats" she's usually checked out of the relationship emotionally. Sex is NOT just "sex" in such cases.

shrug

Just my 2ยข

Take it for what it's worth.

...and for the record...I would've died a faithful husband myself given the opportunity.

I bet this has something to do with biology and hormones

Like women preferring a more masculine (and not necessarily more attractive) face during ovulation than not (and tending to be likelier to cheat during ovulation herself) the reasoning was she kept a dependable beta male for mate but wanted alpha male seed for her offspring :-P

I hope they further divided this study into:
Women who were ovulating at the time
Women who were not
Women on oral contraceptives (they have no clue)
I'm the mistake you wanna make

THIS

Most woman that has been cheated on has always held the original position "my man wouldn't ever do that, cause I'd leave his ass sooooooo fast, etc."

But, all men want to cheat, if not on a cerebral level, by natural instinct.

Back in the states, it's one of the primary reasons why I stopped taking married male friends out for a 'night out' because they always ended up cheating after a while. It made me feel pretty gross, even though I'm not exactly innocent either.

One thing's for sure.... There is NO WAY to tell if a man is going to cheat or not based on looks. For me it's easier to look at the way his wife and he interract, but even that's not an indicator.

Ugly men love to cheat as much as good looking men.
