Maybe... everytime something like this happens I think about what I would do. I feel like I'd be so panicked that I'd trip trying to step over the 3rd rail and fry myself. shake

There's also the "try to lie flat in the muck between the rails and hope the train rolls over you" option. confused

If I see someone who seems a little "off" I subtlely (so as not to agitate them further) try to move away from them and try to stand in front of a column...that way no one can come up from behind and push me. They'd have to grab me from the front putting themselves between me and the train tracks.

The fact we even have to have this discussion is another thing that annoys me about society. It should be common sense to keep your hands to yourself and not push someone in front of a f*cking train.

I think being pushed in front of an oncoming train is a pretty rare occurrence. What is more common is people falling onto the tracks on their own due to fainting, drunkenness or seizures.

or suicide. sad

nod Me too.

I never stand near the edge of the platform as trains near the station, never allow anyone to stand behind me, and always make sure I'm near something that I can grab onto in the event someone pushes me near the edge (either on purpose, or by accident). There is NEVER a time when I am in the subway when I'm not thinking about this exact kind of accident, or thinking about what to do in case it happens.

I've been riding trains since I was 8 or 9 years old.

My mom would always push us to the back whenever a train was arriving (either the LIRR or the subway).

This has become ingrained in me and I do the same to my kids today. nod

In any train station I'm always the one with my back against the wall even if no train is coming... lol

Btw, I was listening to a former train conductor on the radio and he said that people shouldn't think they can lie down flat and let the train roll over them because that's only true in a few places and not true at all for overweight people.

When I was an intern in New York, my first patient had pushed a female in front of a train. The media called him "The Subwaypusher".

He was very psychotic when he reacted to his urge 'to push, pull or kick'. And the poor woman died because of this.

The week after, a homeless guy tried to push somebody in front of a train, too.

The copy cat effect is common among high profile cases.

So, please, stand back in December, because there is an elevated change that somebody in a (substance induced) psychosis re-enacts this event.

Half way of January, you can all stand in the front again and push yourself into the carts.

About the photographer; this is what he does for a living. It is a good photo. Horrible, but good. I don't think he could have saved the victim. And the picture is newsworthy.

The same argument goes for many war photographers. They do their job.

99% of my posts are ironic. Maybe this post sides with the other 1%.

Yes, indeed.

We've got to live with how it is, though.

It is what is.

In the days since this incident, it is noticeable the number of people that are standing AWAY from the platforms edge. This tragedy is clearly fresh on everyone's mind.

Today, I even heard a woman saying to a transit worker (while she was standing on the stairs, not even down on the platform) "I'm afraid to stand on the platform now, I was on that train that hit the man". I don't even know how true her statement was (of course it's likely, but she was mentioning it almost like she was bragging about "she was THERE, and got the t-shirt").

See. I don't trust NOBODY when it comes to wiating for a train. All those folk standing right at the edge of the platform so they can hop on the train first. Ya'll go right ahead. I'll wait my damn turn. I don't want to be nobody's statistic!
