One of my very favorite Christmas movies is one almost nobody knows about: Remember the Night. Wonderful little film, written by Preston Sturges, starring Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Beulah Bondi. Worth the price of admission to hear Sterling Holloway (later the voice of Winnie the Pooh) sing "At the end of a Perfect Day." TCM will show it on Dec. 12 at 9:45 EST. And I am very excited that a film society in Madison is showing on the big screen next weekend.

Other favorites (all classic films):

It's a Wonderful Life
The Bishop's Wife
Christmas in Connecticut
Holiday Affair
The Bells of St. Mary's
Holiday Inn
White Christmas
The Man Who Came to Dinner

You're thinking of the 1938 with Reginald Owen as Scrooge - and pretty much the entire Lockhart family as the Cratchits. That's my favorite version, too.

TCM is airing the 1951 Alistair Sim version at 8:45 CST on Dec. 16. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like they're showing the 1938 this year.

And I totally remember Family Classics on WGN. biggrin

I generally don't like Christmas movies. Many of my favorite films to watch around the holidays usually have Christmas in the background or part of the setting, but aren't really about Christmas.

Batman Returns

Un conte de Noël / A Christmas Tale

Eyes Wide Shut

In Bruges

Morvern Callar

Nadja

nod lol "In keeping with the situtation." (with cokney accent and all)

I like both both versions (1938 & 1941) of Scrooge / A Christmas Carol, though I favor the 1941 version more. The supporting cast (notwithstanding the Lockhart family) is a cut above the 1938 version. (IMHO) I thought Alastair Sim's did a better job acting wise at transforming from this ruthless tightwad to the warm charitable thoughtful human being after the visit from the Three Spirits. I watch them both, in fact I'm watching Scrooge this evening.

Sorry, I can't watch that movie ever again. lol Use to like though'..

Was it overkill? I know they air that son-of-a-gun every Christmas around 3:00 pm. lol

Sometime around the early 80's, it seemed like every network TV affiliate and cable TV station would show It's A Wonderful Life around Christmas, sometimes several times during the holiday season, to the point where you couldn't change the channel without seeing that movie. It was believed at the time that the movie was in the public domain, so that was the reason why nearly every TV channel was showing the movie; however, it turned out that it was still copyrighted, but the movie studio which owned the copyright had long since gone out of business. So one of Ted Turner's movie studios bought the copyright out of bankruptcy court in the early 1990's. and they licensed exclusive broadcast TV rights to NBC for about 25 years for a tidy sum, yet still allowed themseves to sell the movie on home video.

Of course, besides It's A Wonderful Life, I always loved this classic Christmas program:

and this one, too.

However, one of my all-time favorite movies starts out with a Christmas theme, though it's not technically a holiday movie. The movie actually begins sometime just prior to Christmas but ends just after New Year's Day.

Another Christmas movie I liked was the 1969 debut, T.J. I think they played this movie every year around Christmas for a decade or so.

Starring:
T.J.: Kevin Hooks
Willow a Woods (Good Times): Ja'net Dubois

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158681/

Double Feature tonight on TCM

Little Women (8:00pm eastern time)
All Mine To Give (9:15pm eastern time)

Every Sunday evening until Christmas, TCM will show holiday movies.

You can buy or rent it and download it to your iPad via Amazon.com or you can purchase the DVD. If you get TCM, they play it about twice over the holidays.

Wasn't it, though? I still look for re-runs of the Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show and other favorites from back in the day.

The only thing I like better now is Turner Classic Movies. It's wonderful to be able to watch those old classics without commercials.
