Here's one that I got, 3 years ago. It did so much hurt, as it was annoying... It took about an hour and a half.

Look for cleanliness. NO FREE-HAND TATTOOS. Get references. See samples of the tattoo artist's work. Just MHO, as I don't have any tattoos and don't plan on getting any, due to the permanence and pain factors. Two very close friends of mine have many and over the years I've watched their process of getting old, BAD tattoos covered with really well done ones. I'm firmly planted in denial

^^^ Yes.
Don't feel like you need to get something done because you go into a shop. In fact, its perfectly OK to tell the people working there that you're just checking things out because you're considering getting your first tattoo. Their reaction to that should go a long way towards letting you know if you want to get work done there or not.
Make sure the shop is clean. Look to see if they're using gloves. If you sit down to get a tattoo and you don't see new needles and tubes (ink) being prepared, or needles coming out of an autoclave sterilizer, request it/them. If they refuse, walk.
Take the time to look at their work and choose an appropriate artist for what you want. You may have a friend or acquaintance that got some work that looks great, but if that artist doesn't specialize in what you want there's no point in going to them. Although all solid tattoo artists should be able to do decent work in varying styles, most shops (good ones anyway) will have several "specialists", and it's perfectly reasonable to ask them about that. Such as, you said you were getting quotes. Some artists aren't good at, or don't like doing letters. Make sure you sit with one who is.
Placement. It's going to be there forever. And as already mentioned, some places hurt more than others. A good artist will talk to you about it if you choose a tender spot. It's not a reason to avoid that spot, just be aware that if you choose a tender spot to start, a different spot may hurt only a fraction as much if you get another one (and vice versa).
Meaning. Be absolutely SURE it's something you want to be there forever. Or, be comfortable with the fact that you may have a silly tattoo 20, 30 or more years from now (which is fine if you're cool with it).
Be aware that tattoos do not stay fresh and tasty forever. They do spread, blend and fade over time. Certain styles of tattoos will do this more that others, so if an artist brings this up when discussing a design, it's something to seriously consider. However...
Don't let them stear you away from something you are sure you want, either. It's your skin and all.
That's all I can think of right now...

Take your time in every way...with your choice in art and placement, with your shop and with your artist. Make sure to see TONS of the artist's work.
Don't rush.
I do not think the actual procedure is painful at all, I rather like it...but be mindful of your personal pain threshold...maybe start with a smaller piece.

So, did it have the effect on you that you thought it would? I.e., are you now going to get covered in tattooes? Or is one going to be enough?

A buddy of mine got his first (and only to date) tattoo at a highly-acclaimed shop in Brooklyn.
Cost him about $1,000.
I looked at him like he was crazy. He explained that it was on him FOREVER, so it might as well be something worthwhile and meaningful (it's an intricate design with personal meaning).
I agree.
Think about when you're 50 or 60 years old...will you regret this thing?
Almost everyone that I know with tats has at least one that they regret.
Take your time, make it meaningful, and spare no expense.
Personally I don't have one (almost did it for the wrong reasons 2 years ago) but if I ever feel like I want to do this, I'll follow my own advice. Not that I'm gonna spend a thousand bucks, but definitely something significant.

The way I see it, anyone can do anything to their own body they want. I personally would never get a tattoo because I don't like them, but that just applies to my body. Anyone that wants to get inked, well it's their business.
My main hang-ups on tattooes are:
1. Why get a tattoo somewhere you can't ever see it? You know, like on your back. You can't see it! The only way you can see it is in a mirror, and then it's backwards. So if you DO get a back tattoo, shouldn't it be backwards so that when you look in a mirror, it will look right to you?
2. Same thing with chest tattooes, except that although you CAN see them, you're always looking at them upside down. Bummer! If it's a really cool tattoo, shouldn't you get it done upside down so that when you look at it, you see it the way it was meant to be seen?
3. I get that people want to memorialize someone special with a tattoo, but to me all that really says is, "This person was so special to me that I might forget them unless I permanently innk their lifespan on my body". EXCEPTION - anniversaries. Perhaps every man should have his anniversary tattooed somewhere he can see it easily, and not upside down or backwards. What if your anniversary was 11-1 and you got that tattooed on your stomach, but every time you looked in the mirror you saw "1-11" and kept missing your anniversary by 2 1/2 months? C'mon, you know guys would screw up that way!
After reflecting upon the above well-thought-out, logical points, the only conclusion one can come to regarding tattooes is that every single tattoo ever has the exact same message, which is:
LOOK AT ME!
So if I ever get a tattoo, it's going to say LOOK AT ME! and it's going to be upside down and backwards on my lower back.

I'll never be covered in them, but I plan on getting two more (so far). One smaller one and one large piece.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Cool. Make sure you read my advice about why tattooes, especially large ones with a lot of artwork, should be upside down and/or backwards.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You say people get tattoos in places like on their backs where no one can see them and then you say all tattoos scream "LOOK AT ME". That seems contradictory.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Most people scream "LOOK AT ME" with their appearance in one way or another. Not too sure why a tattoo would be singled out over say, a way of dress, or jewelry or a hairstyle.
Also don't think advertising yourself to be looked at is such a bad thing.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I agree and think his post was not serious, but just screaming "LOOK AT ME".
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Dude, if you thought that was a serious post, you've been watching too many dark movies lately!
BTW, I didn't say no one could see back tattoos. Everyone can see back tattoos when the tattooee is shirtless or wearing a halter top, etc. - everyone, that is, except the person with the tattoo.
The tattooee himself can't see his own back tattoo unless he looks in a mirror. Or, I guess, if someone takes his picture.
And the point about tattooes being a "LOOK AT ME!" thing. I think basically that is true, especially given that so many tattooes are, in fact, placed in areas in which the inked person can't see them, or see them correctly. So if one puts a tattoo on a part of the body they can't easily view, then obviously they are putting it there so that OTHERS will look at it.
The difference between jewelry and tattooes in the "LOOK AT ME!" department is that you can take jewelry off, or customize it to the occassion.
Not so easily done with tattooes!
But like I said - I care about no one's body but my own. If tattooes are your thing, go for it!

If you are walking around shirtless or in a halter top, you don't need a tattoo to say "LOOK AT ME".
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Again, you miss the point. The point is that no matter what the tattooee is or is not wearing, s/he cannot see their own back tattoo.
Now, cut it out! You're killing the buzz of what was a very funny post!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The point is no one can see a tattoo on someone's back (or hip or thigh) so how can it say "LOOK AT ME"? You are contradicting yourself. Your post wasn't very well thought-out. Or very funny.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I'm not sure what's funnier - my post, or your complete inability to get it. Re-read my post and point out where I limited the "LOOK AT ME!" reference soley to hidden tattooes, or to people that are fully clothed 100% of the time.
Then go watch "Alien Opponent" and get your sense of humor refreshed.

That's what birthmarks are!
It appears you were here before under another ID, but I don't know what it is. Who were you?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That's just it, you didn't. You applied the "LOOK AT ME" reference to ALL tattoos right here:
Now how is that possible for tattoos that can't be seen by anyone?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
You are making the incorrect assumption that all tattooes are covered up all the time.
Have I offended you in some way? Are you covered in tattooes and think I'm making fun of you? If so, I direct you to the very first sentence of my what-was-really-funny-before-you-came-along tattoo post.
If not, then all I can say is
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Some tattoos basically are. Other than your doctor, who will see a tattoo on your hip? What's the point of saying "LOOK AT ME" to only your doctor? Your 'funny' post is flawed.
