Drugs found at scene of 'Macho' Camacho shooting

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Police in the Puerto Rican city of Bayamon say they found drugs inside the car in which former champion boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho was shot and critically wounded.

Police spokesman Alex Diaz says the man shot and killed withCamacho was in possession of nine small bags of cocaine. A 10th bag was open inside the car.

Camacho and friend Adrian Mojica Moreno were shot as they sat in the parked car. The car belonged to Mojica. No arrests have been made and police have not disclosed any possible motive.

Camacho was in critical condition Wednesday at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan.

Update from last night: his heart had stopped for a brief period and was brought back by drugs. Right now, however, Hector's not responding to any medication.

Hector is confirmed to be brain dead. I'm guessing the family's still traveling to Puerto Rico to make a final decision on whether to take Hector off life support, which at this point, is probably not gonna work anyway. What a shame to leave the world like this. He had been shot three times a year ago when he was driving someone to a bar and someone tried to carjack him.

OK, just got this update from ESPN:

http://espn.go.com/boxing...uerto-rico

The Camacho family is split on whether to take him off life support. His father (and I'm guessing some of Hector's other relatives, maybe his eldest son too) agrees on taking him out of life support, his mother is split between doing that and is said she wants to spend "more time with him". One of his sisters heavily opposed the decision.

Boxing legend Hector "Macho" Camacho will be taken off life support today, the boxing legend's rep tells TMZ.

According to the rep, Camacho's family made the decision to remove him from life support after doctors declared he was brain dead.

The rep says the family is currently making funeral arrangements -- and are deciding between holding the services in either Puerto Rico or New York.

As we reported, Camacho was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday in Puerto Rico. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he went into cardiac arrest.

The former boxing champ was reportedly in the passenger seat of a car ... when another vehicle rolled up and someone opened fire ... striking Camacho several times in the neck and face.

The driver of Camacho's car was killed in the attack. Cops say they recovered 10 baggies of cocaine from the car, 9 of which were on the driver's person.

End nears for shot boxer Hector 'Macho' Camacho

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The mother of Hector "Macho" Camacho says she has decided to have doctors cut off life support for the former world champion boxer Saturday once three more of his sons get a last chance to see him.

Though opposed by Camacho's eldest son, Maria Matias, the boxer's mother, said she had decided it was time for doctors to disconnect the machines that have kept him alive since he was shot in the face earlier in the week.

"I lost my son three days ago. He's alive only because of a machine," Matias said. "My son is not alive. My son is only alive for the people who love him," she added.

She said at a news conference Friday night that she was waiting only for Camacho's three other sons, who were expected to arrive from the U.S. mainland early Saturday. "Until they arrive, we will not disconnect the machine," Matias said.

Another news conference was scheduled for Saturday morning at Centro Medico, the main trauma center for San Juan.

The former champion's mother has the final say in the matter, but his eldest son, Hector Camacho Jr., said he wanted to keep his father alive.

"He's going to fight until the end. My father is a boxer," the son said.

Although doctors had said Camacho was clinically brain dead from a shooting Tuesday night in his hometown of Bayamon, relatives and friends told The Associated Press they were still wrestling with the idea of removing him from life support.

"It is a very difficult decision, a very delicate decision," former pro boxer Victor "Luvi" Callejas, a longtime friend, said in a phone interview. "The last thing we lose is hope and faith. If there is still hope and faith, why not wait a little more?"

Aida Camacho, one of the boxer's aunts, said in an interview that the family could decide by late Friday whether to donate his organs.owed in for Camacho's family and preparations were being made for memorials and a funeral Mass.

RIP Macho Camacho.

http://www.cbsnews.com/83...t-to-head/

Boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho pronounced dead after gunshot to head

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Hector "Macho" Camacho, a Puerto Rican boxer known for skill and flamboyance in the ring as well as for a messy personal life and run-ins with the police, was declared dead on Saturday, four days after being shot in the face. He was 50.

Shot while sitting in a parked car outside a bar Tuesday with a friend in the city of Bayamon, he was declared dead at the Centro Medico trauma center in San Juan. The friend, 49-year-old Adrian Mojica Moreno, died at the scene of the shooting. Police said Mojica had nine small bags of cocaine in his pocket and a 10th bag was found open in the car.

Originally from Bayamon, just outside San Juan, Camacho was long regarded as a flashy if volatile talent, a skilled boxer who was perhaps overshadowed by his longtime foil, Mexican superstar Julio Cesar Chavez, who would beat him in a long-awaited showdown in Las Vegas in 1992.

Camacho fought professionally for three decades, from his humble debut against David Brown at New York's Felt Forum in 1980 to an equally forgettable swansong against Sal Duran in Kissimmee, Florida, in 2010.

In between, he fought some of the biggest stars spanning two eras, including Sugar Ray Leonard, Felix Trinidad, Oscar De La Hoya and Roberto Duran.

"This is something I've done all my life, you know?" Camacho told The Associated Press after a workout in 2010. "A couple years back, when I was doing it, I was still enjoying it. The competition, to see myself perform. I know I'm at the age that some people can't do this no more."

I read he was already in cardiac arrest the day prior. His mother at one of the press conferences held said she was willing to take him off life support once all of his sons (including the one he allegedly assaulted) arrived to pay their last respects. She was all like "my son's dead, the machine's keeping him alive." It was tough seeing his mother and eldest son's emotions like that. No parent should have to bury their child. He was too young to die too. sad

Macho' Camacho wake eventful

Updated: November 29, 2012, 2:14 PM ET
ESPN.com news services

Hector "Macho" Camacho has proved to be as controversial after death as he was during his life.

Several fights broke out during the second day of the viewing of the slain fighter Tuesday, including a scratching match between his alleged girlfriend, another woman who says she's his longtime girlfriend and his sisters, according to local media reports in Puerto Rico.

"I am the actual girlfriend of Macho, and those who don't like it better not bring it," said Cynthia Castillo, who claimed to be Camacho's girlfriend at the time of his death, told ESPN Deportes. "They shouldn't be going after me. They should be thanking me for being with him at all times."

Castillo planted a kiss on the mouth of the slain boxer at the viewing and then walked to the area reserved for family, where she claimed her plate of food was upended. She got into an altercation with Gloria Fernandez, who claimed to have been Camacho's girlfriend for the past 25 years, as well as Camacho's sisters, Esther and Estrella.

"I went to get something to eat because Machito (Hector Camacho Jr.) told me to, and his ex-girlfriend (Fernandez) came up to me and told me that I had to leave," Castillo told ESPN Deportes, showing a fresh scratch across her clavicle. "I said no, so they threw my plate of food and attacked me, and I defended myself."

There was also pushing and shoving between former bantamweight champ Wilfredo Vazquez and Jorge Lozada, who said he's a member of the Camacho family, after Lozada allegedly tried to separate Vazquez's wife and Camacho's mother, Maria Matias, as the two embraced.

For two days, hundreds of people filed past Camacho's open casket, displayed inside a gymnasium decked out for the occasion with black carpet and curtains. The boxer wore white along with a large gold crucifix and a necklace spelling out his nickname, "Macho," in capital letters.
