Working harder then ever - but making less $$$

I am constantly astonished at how with my job lately .... I seem to work harder ... longer hours ... and seem to have nothing at all to show for it (at the end of the month etc).

I have referred to it as the "walmarting of America" - where so many jobs are being "farmed out" to either "computers " or similar people who are working for 9/hr etc .

My job used to be a great job ... i have a passion for it .. but ... it is just shocking now how the "corporations" run the show .... and take a piece of everyones "pie" ...

In 2011, I worked my ass off . I billed the bank I work for over $165,000 - which just 5 short years ago that is what I would have made - and then I would have had to take off for my "medical insurance - probably 15K or so " and other expenses (auto , gas , etc ) but those expenses I would have been able to deduct for my taxes etc .

Of course - because I worked for a "big company" they took a portion of my "billings" for profit ... and then paid my med insurance and such (which i am sure was significantly less than what I would have paid out of pocket if I was self-employed etc) - - - - but still .... I ended up making about 35% of what i billed them ... and i was .... at the end of the year .... really bummed .

So i quit . And took a job at a larger financial bank . A bigger one that promised me 40% and essentially also has an hourly figure that "would add" to the income . Well .... to make a long story short .... the billings are wayyyyy lesss now because their charges per unit are so much lower ... it is so pathetic ....

So here I am ... at my advanced age .... admittedly feeling down . I am goin to start a job search before the new year . I feel I should have never left the job I had last year but I think I sadly burned a bridge there that I cant get back . Long story .

Was wondering if other people feel the same way . I watched alittle bit of M Moores "capitalism" documentary the other night and I happened to see a portion where pilots were talking about how some were on food stamps etc .... and I was thinking ... wow .... because I had met a pilot the other year who was getting into my field - and I thought - wow - I would think a pilot would be making much more money than I was ... sigh .

confused confused

i think you're right, economic opportunities which used to be plentiful are gone now. people feel lucky to have a job, any job. and, money doesn't go as far as it used to.

i think things are changing for the long term and a whole new economic reality is emerging. i don't think it can stop. the 1% are flexing their muscle, us 99%s are feeling it.

Yep. I think this happened already a decade ago here in Europe.

One of the biggest problems with the current crisis in the States is that the people had gotten used to low unemployment rates and always getting another job if they'd lose theirs. So the whole country seems to be in shock and people don't know what to do if they lose theirs (or know that they might end up losing it any day). Once the unemployment rates start rising people are forced to take whatever is available. In the end, it's just the companies that benefit from the high unemployment rates as they can get people to work for them under really poor contracts. They are in no hurry to correct the situation on their own behalf.

They just love to be able to hire people part-time. Make them do the same amount of work as they used to do full-time.

The people and systems running the show are f'ing bullshit.

Technology should be making things easier and reducing working hours for the average person, but the c**ts up on the pedestals are just pissing on everyone and are the only ones reaping the benefits.

The shitty thing is it will need to get alot worse before it can have a chance at getting better.

The general population are just too apathetic still. People are a little bit desperate, but nowhere near desperate enough to force deep rooted change.

How in the heck could some pilots be on food stamps??? eek

As for yourself $165,000 minus the expenses sounds like it would have been real nice income? I guess you fell for "the grass looks greener over the fence" saying; people/we can be fooled by that.

By the way Excellent thread. smile

The airline pilots I knew made about 250,000.00 a year.

Plus, if you bring down your monthly expenses you can have more money to save. I, for instance, have only ever had basic cable.

Those days are gone forever. I swear, I wish Ma Bell stillhad a monopoly. The phone service was more reliable and you knew what the hell your bill would be before you opened it. I hate cell phones. The sound qaulity is shit. My cousin uses a cell phone exclusively, and when she calls me, I can barely understand what she's saying. It sounds like she talking on a freakin walkie talkie.

Guess I'm in the minority because I don't really fully understand threads like this.

Complaining about things like the high cost of cell phones and cable is odd to me.

But maybe people are struggling because they are confusing luxury with necessity. We are a culture that is obsessed with having stuff, more and more stuff - that we really don't need....and then we complain that we can't really afford all this unnecessary stuff?

Man, I've been beyond broke a few times in my life but I always was ok - even with a kid. I carefully managed what money I had and was always able to do pretty damn well with the little that I had.

Being a pilot and having to use food stamps does not make sense what-so-ever. There are servers that make next to nothing and do not need that service. It just doesn't add up to me.

Guess it's all about priorities.

From Obama, the Tax Cut Nobody Heard Of

By MICHAEL COOPERPublished: October 18, 2010

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. — What if a president cut Americans’ income taxes by $116 billion and nobody noticed?

It is not a rhetorical question. At Pig Pickin’ and Politickin’, a barbecue-fed rally organized here last week by a Republican women’s club, a half-dozen guests were asked by a reporter what had happened to their taxes since President Obama took office.

“Federal and state have both gone up,” said Bob Paratore, 59, from nearby Charlotte, echoing the comments of others.

After further prodding — including a reminder that a provision of the stimulus bill had cut taxes for 95 percent of working families by changing withholding rates — Mr. Paratore’s memory was jogged.

“You’re right, you’re right,” he said. “I’ll be honest with you: it was so subtle that personally, I didn’t notice it.”

Few people apparently did. (Including at least one poster on Prince.org, LOL)

I think for most people in this situation, it's because prices have risen much faster than their income.

If one was already spending most of what one made, then over time, the rising prices put them in a position of either having to cut stuff out, or if there's nothing left to cut, get assistance.

Sadly, this is a more common occurrance today. USA monetary policy has been able to keep interest rates down, but it can't do anything about goods sold on the free market. Those have been rising steadily. Mainly food costs, but services have gone up too.

It may cost a lot of money to keep sloths in cable and cell phones, but no one in Col Angus' position is paying any more to keep those sloths happy than they were under President Bush. In fact, they're paying less.

Isn't research wonderful!

Tax Relief for Middle-Class Families

President Obama has cut taxes for middle class families every year he has been in office, and federal taxes for middle class families are currently at nearly their lowest levels in decades.

A typical middle class family has gotten a tax cut of $3,600 over the last four years – more if they were putting a child through college.

• President Obama's Making Work Pay credit provided 95 percent of working families a tax cut of $400 per person or $800 per couple in 2009 and 2010.

• The President's payroll tax cut provided ...on workers a 2 percent reduction in payroll taxes, cutting taxes for a typical family earning $50,000 a year by $1,000 -- or $40 per paycheck -- in 2011 and 2012.

• Families putting a child through college can receive as much as $10,000 of help over four years from the President’s American Opportunity Tax Credit, the equivalent of a 30 percent discount on tuition at a typical state university. For many families, the American Opportunity Tax Credit provides thousands of dollars more help with college expenses than they could have received from pre‐existing tax credits.

• Federal income taxes on middle‐income families are now at nearly their lowest level (as a share of income) since the Eisenhower Administration, and total federal taxes on middle class families also remain at nearly the lowest levels in decades.
