KENNEDY CENTER HONORS Just finished watching the Kennedy Center Honors program. Man, what a show! It must be nominated and win at least one Emmy. I was thoroughly enthralled and entertained. Tracy Chapman performed honoring blues great Buddy Guy. She was fantastic and hasn't changed a day, and did a great rendition of "Hound Dog." Bonny Raite tore it up with "Come and Go Wit Me." Then they brought the house down with performances for Led Zeppelin by Lenny Kravitz ("Whole Lotta Love") and Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart did an absolutely stunning performance of "Stairway to Heaven" with strings and a gospel choir. Simply and unequivocally outstanding.

I caught the tail end of that show since I was watching Nova ( architecture of cathedrals~ don't judge me )
anywho, Lenny did the damn thang! The tribute to Led Zeppelin was amazing! Did you see Debbie Allen and The Pres & Flotus loving it?
And did I catch Robert Plant tearing up a bit in the end? [Edited 12/26/12 21:59pm]

I have to admit... I didn't see LK. I know it's not the popular view, but I don't like him. I thought that Heart was amazing, and I loved the program as a whole.
(I noticed the tearing, too . ) "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

I feel you, because as much as I try I do not "get" Kid Rock. Many folks I know really appreciate him.... kickass belt buckle though.
OMG Heart .... I always loved them. So happy to hear they will be inducted into the RnR Hall of fame.

Oh, that was her?! I was wondering who that black woman was who was gettin lively. I thought when I first saw her, "damn, she the only one in there who's got the nerve to bring it on home!" Look, I was like, they better be glad my black ass wasn't there 'cause I'da shown them the blackest part of my behind by gettin up and dancing! How the hell could they just sit here? Then some just couldn't help themselves and got the hell up and clapped to the music. For a minute, I was thinking the audience was a bunch of old ass white folks who really came just to see the ballerina. (I stole that line from one of the presenters).
Yeah, I saw Robert Plant tear up, too. And he was lovin the Buddy Guy tribute, too.
Oh, who was the Asisian guy swooning? Was that Yomo Maw or whatever his name is? He was groovin, too.

Oh I think it was Yoyo Mah (or however you spell his name )
OMG I AM DYING!!!! *choking and laughing at the same time*
and yes, that was Debbie Allen... I know those man-hands anywhere! [Edited 12/29/12 10:36am]

I found a link before I came back to this thread and saw yours!
We watched this on Christmas night and it was Dude's first time seeing a Kennedy Honors ceremony; he LAPPED it up It was just the perfect balance of everything: the Russian ballet powerhouse (introduced by Alvin Ailey's Judith Jameson, no less)---the retrospective of Dustin Hoffman's acting career, an the youngins' paying tribute to the old music legends
Whoooo, and that girl performing " I'd Rather Go Blind" Good googley moogley that heffa could sang!
We were cracking up that the cameras kept catching Debbie Allen in her "Paper Church Fan" moments, waving like she was getting her spirit on (debbie is always the one in anybody's audience that looks like she's praising at the church with a fan in her hand ); she is so damn extra as a dancer and I love it! And Herbie Hancock (who's getting up there in age) had his old man grin smiling wide for the whole presentation; every time the camera went in his direction you saw nothing but him rocking in his seat from left to right, and a mouth full of very pristine, very expensive caps

Debbie was gettin' it, wasn't she? Had those hands raised to the music like she was gettin' saved Here's her red carpet pic from that night:
and yes, that was Yomo Maw enjoying himself, too. It was like between him, Debbie, and Herbie Hancock, they had all the excitement for the entire audience nested right between the three of them while everyone else was dead to the world in their seats
Yo-yo Ma was a Kennedy honor recipient last year, with Meryl Streep and jazz musician Sonny Rollins, I think. That was probably a good show, too...I'm thinking about scouring around for that online to watch on New Year's day

You know, I had never heard of her. That woman was absolutely perfect. I used to want to be a ballerina when I was a kid, but I was too tall. Watching her was just blistful, just absolute perfection on point.
Yeah, Beth threw down, chile. I didn't know who she was, and when I heard the opening notes to the song, I thought, "Now this white woman better do this song justice or I'ma get the ass!" She did not disappoint. Showed her ass!
I taped the show and am going to keep it on my DVR just so I can go back and watch it when I want to see great performances.
And Debbie! She ain't changed a bit as far as spirit. She was my classmate at Howard, and girlfriend ain't lying when she said, "All I did at Howard was chase the boys!" She was very lively and popular among the Kappas. I remember her frolicking at a picnic the Kappas had in Rock Creek Park back in "the good ole days."
