As one new player enters the daytime syndication marketplace for next fall — Sony Pictures TV’s The Queen Latifah Show — another one is departing. Warner Bros Domestic TV started informing the stations this morning that the company won’t seek renewal for a third season of Anderson Live. The talk show of CNN host Anderson Cooper, which will wrap production in the spring, never found traction with viewers.

The producers tried a revamp after Season 1 with a new venue, new title and all-live format, but that didn’t make a difference. Facing challenging economics, producer Telepictures opted to pull the plug. The daytime marketplace has not been welcoming to newcomers, with no talk show launched in the past couple of years breaking out.

Coincidentally, the news of the demise of Cooper’s daytime talk show came during a hurricane, one of the signature events he is known for covering at CNN. Here are statements from WBTVD and Cooper:

“We are extremely proud of Anderson and the show that he and the entire production team have produced. While we made significant changes to the format, set and produced it live in its second season, the series will not be coming back for a third season in a marketplace that has become increasingly difficult to break through. We will continue to deliver top-quality shows throughout next summer.” – WBTVD spokesperson

“I am very proud of the work that our terrific staff has put into launching and sustaining our show for two seasons. I am also grateful to Telepictures for giving me the opportunity, and indebted to viewers, who have responded so positively. i have no feelings about latifah...but i cant see her doing a talk show.

They're trying to put a good spin on it but this was not AC's forte at all.

I have noticed that they have been trying to water him down for the past couple of years...he needs to go back to what he does best.

Maybe he was stepping on too many toes.

She did one already like maybe 20 years ago. It was fun while it was on, but not really memorable. But these shows come and go like wildfire anyway, so as much as I enjoyed seeing Anderson do soft news and entertainment, I'm not surprised that his time has come and gone already. Latifah will dip back in for a couple years, move onto something else, andthen we'll see who's up next. Long as it's not a reality star (other than Bethenny Frankel), I don't mind so much, I guess.

I loved his outspokeness in this kind of celluloid, plastic environment where he makes commentary on pop culture. Tv has become so saturated with reality and blogger personalities I was happy to actually see a bona-fide journalist sitting behind a desk and calling people out on their stupidity once in a while. I'm sure it pissed a lot of people off, but I actually thought it was kind of a good thing

Ultimately he'll be fine though...and I imagine it was probaly nice to take a couple years off from jumping over land mines in war torn hot spots and just.. just get up and go to an indoor office everyday, where you could have your mug of cofee, and connect with people who weren't literally shell-shocked or under extreme duress every minute of their lives. I wonder what he has coming up next? He's a pretty good writer too, could be nice to see him have another magazine gig....he writes very compelling material on global issues, kind of like the male yin to Lisa Ling's Yang. They're like journalistic twins to me---it was so cute to see her on his show recently; even though they made me feel kind of old seeing how they've both aged and evolved through their work, though

He is a good writer and lord knows we need more investigative journalists, not less. It was probably a nice break for him but he's already back out there in the middle of Sandy...lol!

Bethanny got a 6 week test market run, like Wendy's show did before it launched nationally. She should be back in 2013 for a national launch.

AC's talk show was not good. It is about time to shut that door. AC is a journalist and a good one, he just isn't good at a talk show.

However, the Queen can do a talk show. Although, wouldn't it be in the same vein as Ricki lake show?

I tell you, that man is just so many light years ahead and above the crack talking heads on tv that try to pass themselves of as pundits or journalists. The big mouth personalities at Fox tv and bloggerheads like Michelle Malkin could really learn from his example:

This dude is out in the world, man...actually experiencing it and having it shape his perspective...I love that about him.

I personally have been enjoying the second season of AC tremendously--he's just the style of tv personality I prefer , but you know how that goes- different strokes for different folks.

As for Queen-La: the first show she did 20 years ago was already in the same vein as the Ricki Lake Show back then, as was Tempest Bledsoe (Rudy Huxatble), Rolanda Watts, etc. I don't see why there wouldn't be room at the table for the 40+ year old version of the genre. She likely has a slightly different demographic and shows will be geared towards the focus groups that identify with her. Back in the day, Ricki was well-liked and totally hip---but the Queen was street, & had a palatable urban edge that people also appreciated. She's older now and softened, and the edge has evolved into sass, but that could be fun to watch in terms of personality for many people.

While he's still relatively young, he definitely represents a dying breed of journalist (one that was the standard when I was growing up). He and Lisa Ling are a bit like the last two babies leftover from an era where one not only had to be confident, but competent (and not just in their mastery of Communications 101 skills), and reasonably intelligent and rational in their approach to reporting a story . I just remember going online yesterday to watch hurricane coverage and in recent days for election coverage, and just being so incredibly annoyed by most of the smug for nothing people reporting. They essentially represented what I think styrofoam tastes like, and not much else.

My grandmother said not long ago that she prefers Anderson as a journalist/reporter not a talk show host. I guess she was right...

I like Anderson. He's a great journalist and he's kinda cute. But, as a talk show host, the man is a dull as dishwater!

I remember Queen's talk show being pretty entertaining. I don't think she was able to capture a wide audience and that's why her show didn't last. Hopefully, things will be different this time. I never expected fake Wendy Williams to last as long as she has on TV. If Wendy can attract a wide audience, I'm sure Queen La will be able to.

Wendy is VERY niche, In my market (Portland) she was taken off syndication, the only way to watch her show here is to see it at midnight on BET. There's other states where that is the only way to see her too.
