Men in make-up For S. Korean men, makeup a foundation for successSEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- Cho Won-hyuk stands in front of his bedroom mirror and spreads dollops of yellow-brown makeup over his forehead, nose, chin and cheeks until his skin is flawless. Then he goes to work with a black pencil, highlighting his eyebrows until they're thicker, bolder. "Having a clean, neat face makes you look sophisticated and creates an image that you can handle yourself well," the 24-year-old college student said. "Your appearance matters, so when I wear makeup on special occasions, it makes me more confident." Cho's meticulous efforts to paint the perfect face are not unusual in South Korea. This socially conservative, male-dominated country, with a mandatory two-year military conscription for men, has become the male makeup capital of the world. South Korean men spent $495.5 million on skincare last year, accounting for nearly 21 percent of global sales, according to global market research firm Euromonitor International. That makes it the largest market for men's skincare in the world, even though there are only about 19 million men in South Korea. Amorepacific, South Korea's biggest cosmetics company, estimates the total sales of men's cosmetics in South Korea this year will be more than $885 million. The metamorphosis of South Korean men from macho to makeup over the last decade or so can be partly explained by fierce competition for jobs, advancement and romance in a society where, as a popular catchphrase puts it, "appearance is power." Women also have a growing expectation that men will take the time and effort to pamper their skin. Evidence of this new direction in South Korean masculinity is easy to find. In a crowded Seoul cafe, a young woman takes some lipstick out of her purse and casually applies it to her male companion's lips as they talk. At an upscale apartment building, a male security guard watches the lobby from behind a layer of makeup. Korean Air holds once-a-year makeup classes for male flight attendants. "I can understand why girls don't like to go outside without makeup -- it makes a big difference," said Cho Gil-nam, a tall, stocky 27-year-old insurance fraud investigator in Seoul who starts important days by dabbing on makeup after finishing his multistep morning cleansing and moisturizing routine. He carries a multicolored cosmetics pouch so he can touch up in public bathrooms throughout the day. While U.S. cosmetics companies report growing sales in male cosmetics, American men are often wary of makeup. "Men Wearing Makeup a Disturbing Trend" was how American columnist Jim Shea titled a recent post. [EDITED] http://www.usatoday.com/n...57792806/1
Do you think this will become the norm outside of South Korea? I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

You do realize you're posting this on a website devoted to a guy who is rarely seen without full make-up, right?
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Ex-Moderator | I noticed this a lot when I was in Thailand. Many of the pop stars are Korean and what seemed to be held up as the young, male ideal (ads, tv, etc.) was incredibly feminine-looking to my western eyes. Hairstyles, dress and yes, makeup all looked very feminine to me. But they see it as masculine.
More evidence that gender can be a highly social construct. |

Korean star, Rain (the one Megan Fox had an obsession with):
Adjoo
And my favorite, is the always beautiful Taeyang
I can safely say that my western eyes have readjusted, and there is nothing. I mean NOTHING feminine about these men whatsoever. You can easily spot out a hetero 'pretty' Asian man and one that is homosexual, although to western eyes the differences must be awfully subtle.
Asian perceptions of masculinity are very different from western ones. For example a beard or moustache or a lot of body hair is often consider "old" so a guy that sprots a scruffy beard is often seen as "too old to date.", etc. Many Asian men can't really grow beards anyway.
Another difference is in the quality of the skin. Asian men have.....beautiful skin. I mean, flawlessly beautiful skin. The affluent ones who stay out of the sun (they have an obsession with white skin), look almost doll like, without looking "ghey".
But, the Korean pop stars are not typical of Asian men. They are photoshopped relentlessly to make their skin look "lighter" and therefore smoother in the process. Also, Asian men don't wear makeup in general. Not even Korean ones. They do, however, wear their hair longer, an primp it up much more than western men. Also, some guys will actually tie their hair up in little "bam bam" tails to get it out of their face making the feminine appearence almost laughable to unadjusted western eyes.
It took me a while to get used to it, but after a few months, I find them so good looking most of the time. They look.....refined to me now, as opposed to 'fem'.
The one thing an Asian man can not have...like ever... is a small nose (which most Asian men have). A strong, big nose, with a high nose ridge is considered masculine. Small noses are actually considered very unattractive. Asia is pretty fucked up that way.

Is it gender or sexuality that is socially constructed? I think it's sexuality. You gender doesn't determine your sexuality (though plenty believe that.) I think there is more social pressure to conform your sexuality than your gender. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

He doesn't look 'made up.' although make-up was undoubtedly applied for the photo shoot. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

There's also David Bowie, Kiss, Eddie Murphy and a host of other males in this hemisphere. Men in full make-up isn't as abnormal as one would think.

I've never seen him before but
I remember Sephora a couple years back had this whole stand for men's makeup done by Gaultier. I thought it was cute watching guys up there looking for shade numbers and stuff "what's that book where they're all behind the wardrobe?"
